Book Synopsis Greek Medical Papyri by : Nicola Reggiani
Download or read book Greek Medical Papyri written by Nicola Reggiani and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2019-09-23 with total page 389 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The volume collects papers presented at the International Conference "Greek Medical Papyri - Text, Context, Hypertext" held at the University of Parma on November 2-4, 2016, as the final event of the ERC project DIGMEDTEXT, aimed primarily at creating an online textual database of the Greek papyri dealing with medicine. The contributions, authored by outstanding papyrologists and historians of the ancient medicine, deal with a variety of topics focused on the papyrological evidence of ancient medical texts and contexts. The first part, devoted to "medical texts", contains some new reflections on important sources such as the Anonymus Londinensis and the Hippocratic corpus, as well as on specific themes like the pharmacological vocabulary, the official medical reports, the medical care in the Roman army. The second part collects papers about the "doctors' context", providing highlights from broader viewpoints like the analysis of the writing supports, the study of the ostraka from the Eastern Desert, the evidence of inscriptions and philosophical texts. The third part is entirely focused on the DIGMEDTEXT project itself: the team members present some relevant key issues raised by the digitisation of the medical papyri.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This thirteenth volume of the International Yearbook of Futurism Studies explores some of the many facets of Neo-Futurism from the second half of the twentieth century to the present day. It looks both at the revival and the continuation of Futurist aesthetics, whether in explicit or palimpsest form, in a variety of media: literature, visual art, design, music, architecture, theatre and photography. The essays delve into the broad spectrum of artistic research and offer a good dozen case studies that document, with a transnational and interdisciplinary orientation, the manifold forms of Neo-Futurism in various parts of the world. They investigate how historical Futurism's intellectual and artistic perspective was appropriated and developed further in a more or less conscious, faithful and original way, all the while confronting its progenitor's cultural, social and political misconceptions. Interdisciplinary contributions to neo-futurism as a global phenomenon
Book Synopsis Testi brevi di accompagnamento. Linguistica, semiotica, traduzione by : Donella Antelmi

This book was released on 2019-04-15 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Download or read book The Radical Machiavelli written by and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2015-08-24 with total page 484 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In The Radical Machiavelli: Politics, Philosophy and Language, some of the finest Machiavellian scholars explore the Florentine’s thought five hundred years after the composition of his masterpiece, The Prince. Their analysis, however, goes past The Prince, extending to Machiavelli’s entire corpus and shining new light on his political, historical, and military works, with a special focus on their heritage in modern Marxist thought, the arena in which they reverberate most profoundly and originally. Rather than a neutral, comprehensive, and safe interpretation, this book offers a partial and even partisan reading of Machiavelli, the 16th-century thinker who continues to divide scholars and interpreters, forcing them to confront their responsibility as contemporary thinkers in a global society where Machiavelli's ideas and the issues they address still matter. Book Synopsis Conspiracy Literature in Early Renaissance Italy by : Marta Celati
Download or read book Conspiracy Literature in Early Renaissance Italy written by Marta Celati and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2020-12-17 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Conspiracy has been a political phenomenon throughout history, relevant to any form of power from antiquity to the post-modern era. This means of resistance against power was prevalent during the Renaissance, and the Italian fifteenth century, in particular, can be regarded as an 'age of plots'. This book offers the first full-length investigation of Italian Renaissance literature on the topic of conspiracy. This literature covered a range of different genres and it enjoyed widespread diffusion during the second half of the fifteenth century, when the development of this literary production was connected with the affirmation of centralized political thought and princely ideology in Italian states. The centrality of conspiracies also emerges in the sixteenth century in Machiavelli's work, where the topic is closely interlaced with problems of building political consensus and management of power. This volume presents case studies of the most significant humanist texts (representative of different states, literary genres, and of prominent authors—Alberti, Poliziano, Pontano—and minor, yet important, literati), and it also investigates Machiavelli's political and historical works. Through interdisciplinary analysis, this study traces the evolution of literature on plots in early Renaissance Italy. It points out the key function of the classical tradition and the recurring narrative approaches, the historiographical techniques, and the ideological angles that characterize the literary transfiguration of the topic. This volume also offers a reconsideration of the complex facets of humanist political literature that played a crucial role in the development of a new theory of statecraft.
Book Synopsis Language, Cognition and Identity by : Emanuela Cresti
Download or read book Language, Cognition and Identity written by Emanuela Cresti and published by Firenze University Press. This book was released on 2010 with total page 228 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "An endocentric language is a language whose verbs are lexically precise and concrete whereas its nouns are abstract and vague. An exocentric language has lexically precise and concrete nouns and abstract verbs. The Germanic languages prove to be endocentric and the Romance languages exocentric. The lexical differences entail differences at other levels as well, linguistic as well as extralinguistic. This multilingual volume contains a selection of papers presented at the two-day Italian-Danish linguistic seminar 'Lingua, cognizione e identità : estensioni della tipologia delle lingue endo- ed esocentriche' held at the Italian Department of the University of Florence on the 22nd and 23rd of September 2009. The papers challenge the endo-/exocentric approach at various levels (lexicon, grammar, language infrastructures, socio cultural reflections) with examples from the Romance languages (Italian and French) and the Germanic languages (English, German and Danish)"--Publisher's description, p. [4] of cover.

Book Synopsis Recreating Ancient History: Episodes from the Greek and Roman Past in the Arts and Literature of the Early Modern Period by :
Download or read book Recreating Ancient History: Episodes from the Greek and Roman Past in the Arts and Literature of the Early Modern Period written by and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2021-10-25 with total page 468 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume deals with the question: how did scholars and artists in the early modern period represent, or rather, recreate (Greek and Roman) history? It appears that ancient history was not just studied so as to reconstruct the past, it was used as a way of understanding and legitimizing the present. Sixteen authors from various disciplines have studied the works of scholars and artists in different media so as to reveal how they used ancient history as a rich field of raw material, that could be used, recycled and adapted to new needs and purposes. The studies in this volume are important for historians of the early modern period from all disciplines, and for all those interested in the reception of classical antiquity. Contributors include: Maria Berbera, Jan Bloemendal, Anton Boschloo, Jeanine De Landtsheer, Jan L. de Jong, Karl Enenkel, Marc Laureys, Olga van Marion, Alicia Montoya, Mark Morford, Bettina Noak, Sjaak Onderdelinden, Paul Smith, Wilfried Stroh, Francesca Terrenato, Arnoud Visser, and Bart Westerweel. Book Synopsis Painting in the Shadow by : Fabio Troncarelli
Download or read book Painting in the Shadow written by Fabio Troncarelli and published by V&R Unipress. This book was released on 2023-10-09 with total page 263 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The almost invisible images of a hitherto unknown painter called Eusebius, who worked in San Vitale Ravenna and in Vivarium, are a gallery of portraits of his famous contemporaries such as Theodoric, Vitiges, Amalasunta and a visual commentary of Justinian's tyrannical behaviour. Living between two ages, without belonging to either, this solitary man represents the fullest embodiment of a type of cultural "hybridisation" that is well attested throughout history. Eusebius is a spiritual brother of those "hybrid" artists, who have left extraordinary examples of "grotesques" populated by fantastic beings. After having embodied for so long the unbiased tolerance which had been the core of his own life and those of his companions in Ravenna: that mixture of confidentiality, intelligence, pointed irony, fantasy, and – why not? – touch of madness which had helped him to navigate through the troubled waters of his age, always leaving at the margins the demons who haunted him.
