Book excerpt: A critical history of site-specific art since the late 1960s. Site-specific art emerged in the late 1960s in reaction to the growing commodification of art and the prevailing ideals of art's autonomy and universality. Throughout the 1970s and 1980s, as site-specific art intersected with land art, process art, performance art, conceptual art, installation art, institutional critique, community-based art, and public art, its creators insisted on the inseparability of the work and its context. In recent years, however, the presumption of unrepeatability and immobility encapsulated in Richard Serra's famous dictum "to remove the work is to destroy the work" is being challenged by new models of site specificity and changes in institutional and market forces. One Place after Another offers a critical history of site-specific art since the late 1960s and a theoretical framework for examining the rhetoric of aesthetic vanguardism and political progressivism associated with its many permutations. Informed by urban theory, postmodernist criticism in art and architecture, and debates concerning identity politics and the public sphere, the book addresses the siting of art as more than an artistic problem. It examines site specificity as a complex cipher of the unstable relationship between location and identity in the era of late capitalism. Many young designers would be devastated by a rejection from Le Corbusier's studio, but when the great architect told her they had no use for a female furniture designer, Perriand only became more determined to prove her mettle as an artist. Under Le Corbusier, and long after she left his studio, Perriand's contributions to both furniture design and architecture demonstrated a unique attention to the organic artistry of nature as well as the egalitarian possibilities of the machine age. Her leftwing populist politics motivated much of her work, from modular furniture systems to major architectural projects. This monograph explores Perriand's most famous interiors, original furniture and architectural projects, as well as her never-before-seen sketchbooks, shedding new light on her creative process and place in design history. Charlotte Perriand (1903-99) experienced the first breakthrough in her career with Le Bar sous le toit, a 1927 interior design piece that predicted the elegant minimalism and utilitarian nature of her future work. Although today she is perhaps best known for her early chaise longue designs, Perriand also created the plans for a number of major buildings across Europe and contributed interior designs to Le Corbusier's Unit d'habitation. Book excerpt: The Mexican artist Damián Ortega loves to dissemble iconic consumer goods--Coke bottles, Volkswagen Beetles, even tortilla chips--and recombine their parts to produce refreshing sculptural perspectives on their cultural meaning and function. For this book he has put together a selection of drawings, made between 1991 and 2007, that were created to plot these sculptures and their installations. Ortega, who was once a political cartoonist, retains in his drawings an open-endedness that invites the viewer to imagine the work's possible applications. The book's title, Supervivencia de la Idea (Survival of the Idea), refers to its partial status as an archive of ideas--some of which have already been executed, others of which await realization, as with Ortega's recent mobile obelisk for New York's Central Park. Damián Ortega was born in 1967 in Mexico City and currently lives and works in Berlin, Germany. He has had solo museum exhibitions at the Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles (2005), Tate Modern, London (2005) and Institute of Contemporary Art, Philadelphia (2002), among others.
