Book Synopsis Parity-time Symmetry and Its Applications by : Demetrios Christodoulides
Download or read book Parity-time Symmetry and Its Applications written by Demetrios Christodoulides and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-11-28 with total page 585 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book offers a comprehensive review of the state-of-the-art theoretical and experimental advances in linear and nonlinear parity-time-symmetric systems in various physical disciplines, and surveys the emerging applications of parity-time (PT) symmetry. PT symmetry originates from quantum mechanics, where if the Schrodinger operator satisfies the PT symmetry, then its spectrum can be all real. This concept was later introduced into optics, Bose-Einstein condensates, metamaterials, electric circuits, acoustics, mechanical systems and many other fields, where a judicious balancing of gain and loss constitutes a PT-symmetric system. Even though these systems are dissipative, they exhibit many signature properties of conservative systems, which make them mathematically and physically intriguing. Important PT-symmetry applications have also emerged. This book describes the latest advances of PT symmetry in a wide range of physical areas, with contributions from the leading experts. It is intended for researchers and graduate students to enter this research frontier, or use it as a reference book.

Book Synopsis Geometric Mechanics and Its Applications by : Weipeng Hu
Download or read book Geometric Mechanics and Its Applications written by Weipeng Hu and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2023-01-01 with total page 540 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: To make the content of the book more systematic, this book mainly briefs some related basic knowledge reported by other monographs and papers about geometric mechanics. The main content of this book is based on the last 20 years’ jobs of the authors. All physical processes can be formulated as the Hamiltonian form with the energy conservation law as well as the symplectic structure if all dissipative effects are ignored. On the one hand, the important status of the Hamiltonian mechanics is emphasized. On the other hand, a higher requirement is proposed for the numerical analysis on the Hamiltonian system, namely the results of the numerical analysis on the Hamiltonian system should reproduce the geometric properties of which, including the first integral, the symplectic structure as well as the energy conservation law.
Book Synopsis Higher Symmetries and Its Application in Microwave Technology, Antennas and Metamaterials by : Guido Valerio
Download or read book Higher Symmetries and Its Application in Microwave Technology, Antennas and Metamaterials written by Guido Valerio and published by MDPI. This book was released on 2019-12-03 with total page 98 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Artificial materials have been widely studied and used in photonics and microwaves in the last few decades. Recent research has proven that the introduction of specific higher symmetries in each cell of a periodic medium is an effective approach to obtain unprecedented exotic behaviors and to overcome the current limitations of these devices. For example, simple symmetries of a purely spatial type (glide or twist transformations) can have a huge impact on the properties of the resulting materials, thus defining wideband behaviors for flat lenses or large stop bands for novel EBG materials. This Special Issue opens with a novel discussion on the effect of time-reversal symmetries in antenna theory and presents new structures exploiting symmetries for antenna and microwave components, such as flat lenses, helix antennas, and gap-waveguides. Finally, new modeling methods are discussed for the study of wave propagation along glide surfaces and twist lines.

Book Synopsis Origin of Symmetries by : C. D. Froggatt
Download or read book Origin of Symmetries written by C. D. Froggatt and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 1991 with total page 606 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The development in our understanding of symmetry principles is reviewed. Many symmetries, such as charge conjugation, parity and strangeness, are no longer considered as fundamental but as natural consequences of a gauge field theory of strong and electromagnetic interactions. Other symmetries arise naturally from physical models in some limiting situation, such as for low energy or low mass. Random dynamics and attempts to explain all symmetries ? even Lorentz invariance and gauge invariance ? without appealing to any fundamental invariance of the laws of nature are discussed. A selection of original papers is reprinted.

Book Synopsis Non-Hermitian Quantum Mechanics by : Nimrod Moiseyev
Download or read book Non-Hermitian Quantum Mechanics written by Nimrod Moiseyev and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2011-02-17 with total page 409 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Non-Hermitian quantum mechanics (NHQM) is an important alternative to the standard (Hermitian) formalism of quantum mechanics, enabling the solution of otherwise difficult problems. The first book to present this theory, it is useful to advanced graduate students and researchers in physics, chemistry and engineering. NHQM provides powerful numerical and analytical tools for the study of resonance phenomena - perhaps one of the most striking events in nature. It is especially useful for problems whose solutions cause extreme difficulties within the structure of a conventional Hermitian framework. NHQM has applications in a variety of fields, including optics, where the refractive index is complex; quantum field theory, where the parity-time (PT) symmetry properties of the Hamiltonian are investigated; and atomic and molecular physics and electrical engineering, where complex potentials are introduced to simplify numerical calculations.
Book Synopsis Fano Resonances in Optics and Microwaves by : Eugene Kamenetskii
Download or read book Fano Resonances in Optics and Microwaves written by Eugene Kamenetskii and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-11-20 with total page 592 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book discusses the development of Fano-based techniques and reveals the characteristic properties of various wave processes by studying interference phenomena. It explains that the interaction of discrete (localized) states with a continuum of propagation modes leads to Fano interference effects in transmission, and explores novel coherent effects such as bound states in the continuum accompanied by collapse of Fano resonance. Originating in atomic physics, Fano resonances have become one of the most appealing phenomena of wave scattering in optics, microwaves, and terahertz techniques. The generation of extremely strong and confined fields at a deep subwavelength scale, far beyond the diffraction limit, plays a central role in modern plasmonics, magnonics, and in photonic and metamaterial structures. Fano resonance effects take advantage of the coupling of these bound states with a continuum of radiative electromagnetic waves. With their unique physical properties and unusual combination of classical and quantum structures, Fano resonances have an application potential in a wide range of fields, from telecommunication to ultrasensitive biosensing, medical instrumentation and data storage. Including contributions by international experts and covering the essential aspects of Fano-resonance effects, including theory, modeling and design, proven and potential applications in practical devices, fabrication, characterization and measurement, this book enables readers to acquire the multifaceted understanding required for these multidisciplinary challenges.

Book Synopsis Symmetries and Group Theory in Particle Physics by : Giovanni Costa
Download or read book Symmetries and Group Theory in Particle Physics written by Giovanni Costa and published by Springer. This book was released on 2012-02-03 with total page 300 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Symmetries, coupled with the mathematical concept of group theory, are an essential conceptual backbone in the formulation of quantum field theories capable of describing the world of elementary particles. This primer is an introduction to and survey of the underlying concepts and structures needed in order to understand and handle these powerful tools. Specifically, in Part I of the book the symmetries and related group theoretical structures of the Minkowskian space-time manifold are analyzed, while Part II examines the internal symmetries and their related unitary groups, where the interactions between fundamental particles are encoded as we know them from the present standard model of particle physics. This book, based on several courses given by the authors, addresses advanced graduate students and non-specialist researchers wishing to enter active research in the field, and having a working knowledge of classical field theory and relativistic quantum mechanics. Numerous end-of-chapter problems and their solutions will facilitate the use of this book as self-study guide or as course book for topical lectures.
