This book was released on 1994 with total page 152 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Ordnance Survey Memoirs are a uniquely detailed source for the history of the northern half of Ireland immediately before the Great Famine. They were written in the 1830s to accompany the Ordnance Survey maps, but were not published at the time. In these new editions they act as a 19th century Domesday book and are essential to the understanding of the cultural heritage of their communities. They document the landscape and situation, buildings and antiquities, land-holdings and population, and employment and livelihood of the parishes. This volume contains the Memoirs for 4 coastal parishes in east Antrim, covering the village of Whitehead and smaller areas of Ballycarry and Glynn.

Book Synopsis Possessed by the Devil by : Andrew Sneddon
Download or read book Possessed by the Devil written by Andrew Sneddon and published by The History Press. This book was released on 2013-05-15 with total page 234 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1711, in County Antrim, eight women were put on trial accused of orchestrating the demonic possession of young Mary Dunbar, and the haunting and supernatural murder of a local clergyman’s wife. Mary Dunbar was the star witness in this trial, and the women were, by the standards of the time, believable witches – they smoked, they drank, they just did not look right. With echoes of Arthur Miller’s The Crucible and the Salem witch-hunt, this is a story of murder, of hysteria, and of how the ‘witch craze’ that claimed over 40,000 lives in Europe played out on Irish shores.

LC's collection of local history and genealogical material for the British Isles and Ireland is so large that it ranks second only LC's holdings of material relating to the U.S. In fact, British local historical societies have pursued active publishing programs since the 1700s and have produced hundreds of parish registers and other local records; LC holds many of these publications. Also useful for those researching English, Irish, Scottish, and Welsh genealogy in other large libraries.
Book Synopsis Forgetful Remembrance by : Guy Beiner
Download or read book Forgetful Remembrance written by Guy Beiner and published by Oxford University Press, USA. This book was released on 2018 with total page 728 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Forgetful Remembrance examines the paradoxes of what actually happens when communities persistently endeavour to forget inconvenient events. The question of how a society attempts to obscure problematic historical episodes is addressed through a detailed case study grounded in the north-eastern counties of the Irish province of Ulster, where loyalist and unionist Protestants -- and in particular Presbyterians -- repeatedly tried to repress over two centuries discomfiting recollections of participation, alongside Catholics, in a republican rebellion in 1798. By exploring a rich variety of sources, Beiner makes it possible to closely follow the dynamics of social forgetting. His particular focus on vernacular historiography, rarely noted in official histories, reveals the tensions between professed oblivion in public and more subtle rituals of remembrance that facilitated muted traditions of forgetful remembrance, which were masked by a local culture of reticence and silencing. Throughout Forgetful Remembrance, comparative references demonstrate the wider relevance of the study of social forgetting in Northern Ireland to numerous other cases where troublesome memories have been concealed behind a veil of supposed oblivion.
