Book excerpt: Though best known for his adventure novels and humorous stories, Twain was a passionate world traveler and he recorded his journeys in several travel books which were all very popular at the time: "The Innocents Abroad" humorously chronicles Twain's "Great Pleasure Excursion" on board the chartered vessel Quaker City through Europe and the Holy Land in 1867. "Roughing It" follows the travels of young Mark Twain through the Wild West during the years 1861–1867. The book illustrates many of Twain's early adventures, including a visit to Salt Lake City, gold and silver prospecting, real-estate speculation and a journey to the Kingdom of Hawaii. "Old Times on the Mississippi" is a short account of Twain's experiences as a cub pilot, learning the Mississippi river. "A Tramp Abroad" details Twain's journey through central and southern Europe with his friend. As the two men make their way through Germany, the Alps, and Italy, they encounter situations made all the more humorous by their reactions to them. "Life on the Mississippi" is a memoir by Mark Twain of his days as a steamboat pilot on the Mississippi River before the American Civil War, recounting his trip along the Mississippi River from St. Louis to New Orleans after the War. "Following the Equator" – In an attempt to extricate himself from debt, Twain undertook a tour of the British Empire in 1895, a route chosen to provide numerous opportunities for lectures in English. The book is a social commentary, critical of racism towards Blacks, Asians, and Indigenous groups. "Some Rambling Notes of an Idle Excursion" presents a series of stories about a trip that Twain and some friends took to Bermuda from New York City. "Chapters from my Autobiography" comprises a rambling collection of anecdotes and ruminations of Mark Twain, assembled during his life. Samuel Langhorne Clemens (1835-1910), better known by his pen name Mark Twain, was an American writer, humorist, entrepreneur, publisher, and lecturer.

Book excerpt: "e;In the pre-Covid-19 era, being a digital globetrotter and getting to every country on earth seemed to be all the go, so Ian is certainly on to a trend"e; - Tony Wheeler, co-founder of Lonely PlanetThe Christopher Columbus of the 2000s. - A true and breathtaking story of dedication, perseverance, and innovation in entrepreneurship and alternative living. A testimony of how to push the limits of human curiosity to new boundaries. What could you possibly learn from over twenty years spent circling around the globe, seventeen of them non-stop as a self-made digital entrepreneur? How much could your life change from exploring every single country of the world, a total of 230 countries including every single one of the 195 recognized by the United Nations? This is the account of an incredible journey with twists, turns, and perpetual adventures! Seventeen years living and working from a carry-on backpack, having only the bare essentials to live comfortably, along with a home office to fund travels through the wonder of passive income. The story of how a man destined to a promising engineering career became troubled by the prospect of living the rat race through a nine to five routine, triggering his nomadic instincts to choose a life where he dedicated every single day of his existence to living, breathing and experiencing freedom, adventure and wonder. An inspiring testimony of alternative ways to live life outside the beaten track that we've always known. A reflection on the level of freedom one can enjoy when granting himself the right to do so. A thirst for knowledge guided by a desire to encounter fellow citizens of the world, from tribesmen to royalty, from Afghanistan to Zimbabwe, by means of land, sea and air. A journey motivated by only one desire; discover the unknown and to live every single day as if it was the last.Giving up the security and comfort of western civilization is not the most intuitive thing to do. This is the story of a lifetime wanderlust dreamer who decides to throw away his freshly earned engineering diploma to risk an extraordinary path through life. The concept of online entrepreneurship was still unknown at the time, when this dreamer decided to pioneer a new lifestyle and go "e;all in"e; with a digital nomad set-up to fund his love of traveling. A journey that would slowly but surely guide him to and through every country of the world. A long voyage that invariably brought a catalog of juicy unexpected anecdotes. His habit to always test the territory and socialize in the most diverse situations brought him to infiltrate tribes in Africa, the Middle East and the Pacific Islands, join the ranks of surf communities on the most remote seas, and even share meals with Mongolian Nomads as well as Afghan ministers. His unorthodox style of traveling brought him to navigate the seven seas from cargo ships to yachts, crossing international borders through Jungles on motorbikes, and even boarding intercontinental trains through tens of thousands of kilometers, many times bringing him face to face with the reality of the world such as the horrors of war in Syria, Yemen, and Iraq, while escaping the hands of terrorism on several occasions. This is the story of a restless adventurer with a zest for life.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1912, Italy occupied Rhodes, an Ottoman town inhabited by Greek Orthodox, Muslims, Jews, and Catholics. Rhodes became a territory of Italy’s empire in 1923 following the Treaty of Lausanne, only one year after Mussolini seized power in Rome. The Ottoman demise corresponded to the expansion of fascist imperialism in the Mediterranean. Both the Ottoman Young Turks and Italian colonial governors invoked the role of a "new generation" of youth in imperial rule. Generations of Empire investigates the relationship between state and society in light of successive transformations of imperial rule, rethinking Italian colonialism as post-Ottoman history. Andreas Guidi explores how communal life in the town of Rhodes was affected by the transition between these regimes, from an autocratic to a constitutional empire in late Ottoman years to Italian military occupation to fascist annexation. Based on archival sources in five languages from seven different countries, the book investigates generational dynamics in the domains of political activism, the family, education, work and leisure, and mobility. Generations of Empire offers a vivid picture of how a local society navigated large-scale social and political transformations in the modern Mediterranean.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The authors story is based on her life as she remembers it. It is set against the background of real historical events in WWII. Growing up during the last three years of the war in Berlin, the sirens, their endless flight on the trains out of and back to Berlin, became part of her life, there was no birthday party for the three year old and again the family was on the move, this time to live in a castle in Thuringia. All these events were accepted without questions or fear. In 1946 they returned to the old neighborhood which had become a rubble desert but soon transformed into the greatest childhood as her dying older sister insisted time again and again. Most names have been changed to protect the living. I owe a great debt to my father and mother who have answered my many questions and I included their stories in this book.

Rome wasn't built in a day . . . but it's only going to take one for Sammi's world to crumble. How did a self-orchestrated gap year turn into a less-than-enthralling lifestyle as a couch potato at her parents' house? Determined to get motivated and join life again, Sammi Shorten books a budget Bellissimo Tour to Rome, the Eternal City. What she hadn't signed up for was being stuck with an eclectic group of binge-drinking foreigners in a bed-bug-infested hostel from hell. Things in Rome really couldn't get much worse . . . could they? When plans go completely awry Sammi's left with only one option, and it's the one place she really doesn't want to turn - to the man who might very well get her into the worst trouble of all: the gorgeous local tour guide, Marcello Bambozzi. Book excerpt: Blond, beautiful, and brazenly honest, Aviva Drescher—one of the boldest cast members of Bravo’s The Real Housewives of New York City and most talked-about stars of reality TV—shares her REAL story in this tell-all memoir. From the moment Aviva Drescher stepped her prosthetic leg into the spotlight, she sparked controversy and ratings. Now, for the first time, the native New Yorker stands on her own two feet to speak out on her fascinating life and expose the truth about her many medical and elective surgeries, and what really happens behind the scenes of reality TV. Aviva tells the story of how she lost her foot in a barn accident at the age of six and the numerous—sometimes bizarre—attempts to reattach it. After a trip to India to be “cured” by a famous mystic, young Aviva learned to use fashion and style to draw attention away from her prosthesis. She fled to Paris in her early twenties, where she transformed herself into a wild club chick and danced on tables with the crème de la crème of the big-hair supermodel era. Then, through a series of tumultuous relationships, Aviva had four children by two husbands, changed religions, got a law degree, and became an entrepreneur. And since getting elective surgery at the age of twenty-six, she has become a powerhouse at raising money for amputees everywhere. Not only is she elegant, sophisticated, well educated, and drop-dead gorgeous, but Aviva knows how to tell a story—her story—in this beautifully written memoir. Leggy Blonde tells how, through struggle and success, drama and determination, Aviva finally found the strength to show the world who she really is.
