Book excerpt: When a young French schoolmaster accepts an offer to spend a year teaching English in a lycée in a remote corner of Eastern France it’s not just to improve his spoken French and gain a deeper insight into the workings of a foreign culture. He longs to wipe his slate clean of past failures and to escape the entrenchment into which his English life is sinking. He dreams of freedom, adventure, romance, a more authentic kind of living and the narrowing of that gap between what he is and what he’d like to be. But his year reserves some dramatic surprises. And over his head dangles the gut-piercing threat that at any moment this fascinating new life could be brought to a premature end.

Book excerpt: A Word from the Author In a world filled with so many unanswered questions, its hard to find answers for the many questions without proper gudiance. We are yet faced with the missing piece of the puzzle trying to make it fit, yet everyone is searching. Without proper prayer and study of the scriptures, our perspective becomes confused. I have been expired by the anointing of such a great God to write this book. About twenty years ago, I wrote my first fiction novel but never published it. Today, my life has changed as I have been moved by the anointing of God to write. I have sought the Lord diligently for his will and direction for my life. Sometimes what we will is not always God's will. We make promises and never commit to them. We lose battles but never seek the definition of why we lost the battle and were never able to overcome it. You have decision in life, and choices, and for the most part, we choose which decisions we will make. As a born again believer of the Apostolic persuasion, I have been taught down through the years, and to this day I believe that the Lord has a destiny for my life, and whatever he has destined, it will come to birth. I currently attend Greater Grace Apostolic Faith Church, I thank God for all the men and women of God whom have made positive deposit into my life. The God we serve is a covenant God. What we will is not always his will... My prayer is that as you read this book, that the spirit of God will make a new manifestation in your life. I hope the spirit of love will begin flourishing in your life, and that the Glory of God may be revealed, and that you will experience a revelation from the God that made the heaven and the earth, who is the creator of this marvelous creation. It is my belief that when you read this book, it will have an inner effect on you as you allow it to minister to your spiritual man, and that it will change your life.

Book excerpt: This volume invites you to wander through the shadows of the City of Light and discover another, often invisible and silent Paris. Its chapters explore Parisian margins, including various populations, spaces and practices, as represented in French literature and cinema since 1800. You will take a peek at the Parisians’ criminal activities and nocturnal lives in the nineteenth century, and witness how industrialization and capitalism between the 1850s and the 1970s reshaped the socioeconomic map of the city by creating or reinforcing spaces of social inequity. You will also meet marginalized groups that are often ignored or neglected in today’s Paris—and French society—including the LGBTQIA+, Black and immigrant communities.

H. Lawrence and T. S. Eliot. Bristling with wit, frank analysis, and versatile intelligence, Operative Words features reviews of more than thirty books by such authors as Jay McInerney, Daniel Boorstin, John Keegan, and Doris Lessing as well as detailed profiles of twenty-five major American writers (from Cleveland Amory to Tom Wolfe), all originally appearing in major American newspapers and reference books. Bonus features include in-depth analyses of short stories by Vladimir Nabokov and F. Scott Fitzgerald, the critical reception of T.S. Eliot's Four Quartets , and cutting-edge French and American literary theory. No less spirited and eclectic are Bodine's takes on music, which range from an interview with an up-and-coming violinist and reviews of Mahler and Stravinsky biographies to the sounds and images of Roxy Music and John Lennon. A rich feast of opinion and reflection.

Book excerpt: This “passionate affirmation of the simple life” explores how walking has influenced history’s greatest thinkers—from Henry David Thoreau and John Muir to Gandhi and Nietzsche (Observer) “It is only ideas gained from walking that have any worth.” —Nietzsche In this French bestseller, leading thinker and philosopher Frédéric Gros charts the many different ways we get from A to B—the pilgrimage, the promenade, the protest march, the nature ramble—and reveals what they say about us. Gros draws attention to other thinkers who also saw walking as something central to their practice. On his travels he ponders Thoreau’s eager seclusion in Walden Woods; the reason Rimbaud walked in a fury, while Nerval rambled to cure his melancholy. He shows us how Rousseau walked in order to think, while Nietzsche wandered the mountainside to write. In contrast, Kant marched through his hometown every day, exactly at the same hour, to escape the compulsion of thought. Brilliant and erudite, A Philosophy of Walking is an entertaining and insightful manifesto for putting one foot in front of the other.
