Book excerpt: The purpose of this research study was to examine and analyze the perceptions of students with mild-moderate disabilities, teachers, and parents regarding the students' experiences related to their secondary transition plan. More specifically, the qualitative single-case study sought to identify areas of alignment and divergence of these three key members' perspectives since experiences and perceptions are unique to an individual based on the context and individual's perspective of the event. These findings suggested that the district showed experiences of valuable student presence and input in their IEP meetings and trusting supportive student-teacher relationships. The study also revealed that significant barriers to student-centered and relevant experiences and opportunities exist. Ongoing challenges experienced and perceived by students, teachers, and parents were limited planning time with the student, inconsistent student opportunities and experiences, student's and parent's limited understanding of IEP/transition- specifically that the sole means of an IEP is a means to pass courses and graduate, limited student voice in general education, and limited parental knowledge of student's experiences related to planning and implementation. This research hopes to provide information that will enable school district officials to understand the students' needs better and make informed decisions in adjusting the secondary transition program to meet those individualized student needs and improve post-secondary outcomes.

Book excerpt: With the implementation of the Workforce Innovation Opportunity Act of 2014 (WIOA), a greater emphasis on collaboration among parents, teachers, and outside service providers exists within the secondary transition process. In order for students to be able to reach their post-school goals successfully, parents need to fully understand the transition planning process and be a supported member of the Individualized Education Program (IEP) Team. In order to determine the parental perspective on the transition planning process, a qualitative research design was chosen (Creswell & Guetterman, 2019). Through a qualitative design, perceptions of parents of students with disabilities in relation to the transition planning process were analyzed. Qualitative data was collected through a survey and interviews of parents of students with disabilities. The primary rationale for collecting the data was to gain the parental perspective on the transition planning process for students with disabilities, determine the knowledge that parents of students with disabilities have in regards to accessing services in the college, university, or vocational education settings, and determine the knowledge that parents of students with disabilities have in regards to accessing services in the area of employment. The results of the study indicated that parents are not provided with training on the transition planning process, do not understand the roles of the outside agencies designed to assist in the transition planning process, and feel that they need more support to assist their child to access services in the college, university, or vocational educational settings.

Book excerpt: The purpose of the study was to determine whether or not the implementation of special education graduates' secondary transition plans by a team of supporters such as teachers, parents, administrators, and postsecondary mentors were well-constructed and in alignment with the graduates' high school curriculum and intended postsecondary goals, as well as whether the supporters followed through with helping the graduates achieve those postsecondary goals. The study also examined whether a loop existed between linking the secondary transition plans (indicator 13) to the postsecondary outcomes (indicator 14) and the feedback from the postsecondary outcomes back to the transition plans. -- Under the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act, there are 20 indicators under the state performance plan that school districts are required to adhere to if receiving federal funding. Indicators 13 and 14 make up the transition requirements that school districts are required to implement and report on. Indicator 13 is defined as the percentage of high school students age 16 and above with an Individual Education Plan (IEP) in which appropriate measurable postsecondary goals are updated every year based upon students' transition service needs, age appropriate transition assessments, transition services, and curriculum and instruction that will enable the students to meet postsecondary goals. Indicator 14 is defined as the percentage of students who had high school IEPs and are competitively employed, enrolled at a postsecondary institution, or both within a year of leaving high school. The results of the study indicated that the loop linking Indicators 13 and 14 was virtually nonexistent and the secondary transition plans were inadequate.
