Specifically our research question states, "According to professionals in the field of Health and Human Services, does attending parenting education courses improve parent-to-child communication and intervention skills among Latino Families." In order explore this statement we conducted a research study with referring professionals and facilitators. We asked them questions pertaining to their experience with Latino families and their observations related to parenting education courses. We found that parents that attend parenting education courses have a higher probability to improve their parent-to-child communication and intervention skills. Further, we found that the need for crisis intervention was lower among parents that received parenting education, and assisted them in developing a positive family cohesion.

Improvements in student achievement occur regardless of racial or cultural background (Flaxman & Inger, 1991). Given that the language barrier, cultural differences, and lack of knowledge about the education system (Valdes, 1996) are some of the factors that prevent Latino Spanish speaking parents in participating in the education of their children, the purpose of this graduate project is to reduce such barriers by promoting a collaborative family-school relationship. In order to achieve this, literature regarding this topic was examined and taken into consideration to create a series of four workshops for Spanish-speaking parents with information regarding how parental involvement can be impacted through communication technology, family environment, parenting styles, and early college planning. The workshops will focus on providing Spanish-speaking parents with significant information about secondary education that supports both student and family.

Book excerpt: This study used qualitative interviews to explore and describe the perceptions of Latino and Puerto Rican parents in a community middle school about if, why, and how Latino families decide to engage in their children's schooling. All 15 Latino parents perceived that they held or shared responsibility with the school for their child's educational success (parent or partnership-focused). Parents reported involvement despite their perceptions of low levels of knowledge and skills, and/or time and energy. Parents responded to school, teacher, and student invitations for involvement; however, no parent described the school as a community school and few parents reported teacher invitations. Parents reported much more home-based involvement than school-based involvement. All parents reported talking to their children in ways that communicated values, goals, expectations, or aspirations, yet only one parent reported planning for post-secondary education. Implications for further research with Latino parents and school practice are presented.

Book excerpt: The Supporting Healthy Marriage (SHM) evaluation was launched in 2003 to test the effectiveness of a skills-based relationship education program designed to help low-income married couples strengthen their relationships and, in turn, to support more stable and more nurturing home environments and more positive outcomes for parents and their children. The evaluation is led by MDRC, in collaboration with Abt Associates and other partners, and is sponsored by the Department of Health and Human Services. The SHM program is a voluntary, yearlong, relationship and marriage education program for lowincome, married couples who have children or are expecting a child. The program provides group workshops based on structured curricula; supplemental activities to build on workshop themes; and family support services to address participation barriers, connect families with other services, and reinforce curricular themes. The study's rigorous random assignment design compares outcomes for families who are offered SHM's services with outcomes for a similar group of families who are not offered SHM's services but can access other services. This report presents estimated impacts on the program's targeted outcomes about one year after couples entered the study.
