Book excerpt: Parents of adult children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and intellectual disabilities (ID) face many challenges as their child transitions from school aged services to adulthood. With an increasing population of individuals with ASD moving into adulthood, there is growing need to better understand ways to improve outcomes during the transition to adulthood. The purpose of this study was to examine the experience of parents during their child's transition out of their local educational agency services and into adulthood. The following questions directed this study: What are the perceptions of parents of adult children with ASD and co-occurring ID regarding the effectiveness of transition planning during school-aged services? What are the perceptions of parents of adult children with ASD and co-occurring ID regarding their child's preparation for adult services? What are the perceptions of parents of adult children with ASD and cooccurring ID regarding their child's quality of life after transitioning to adulthood? This study found that parents perceived the school transition planning process as individualized, included parent input, and incorporated student specific strengths and interests. Yet, the study showed an absence of continuity between the transition planning process and the success of the actual transition. Participants in this study conveyed the importance of incorporating the school team in the identification of an adult service provider, the need for transparency during the transition, and improved training and oversight for adult service providers regarding individuals with complex needs.

Book excerpt: While the process of obtaining an Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) diagnosis for a child can involve several challenges for parents (Keenan, Dillenburger, Doherty, Byrne, & Gallagher, 2010), this process may be even more complex for immigrant parents (Begeer, El Bouk, Boussaid, Terwogt, & Koot, 2009; Jegatheesan, Fowler, & Miller, 2010). This qualitative study utilized an eco-cultural framework (Super & Harkness, 1986) to explore the experiences of eight immigrant families during their process of obtaining a diagnosis and services for their children with ASD. Each family participated in two in-depth, semi-structured interviews (45-90 minutes) with many open-ended questions to permit parents to recount their story of obtaining the ASD diagnosis and services for their children. Using open and axial coding, the data were analyzed inductively and deductively to reveal various themes related to the diagnosis, treatment services, relationships with professionals, and future expectations for their children. Given that Montreal is such a highly multicultural metropolis (Statistics Canada, 2007), it is important that professionals recognize how parental beliefs about the ASD diagnosis could shape their treatment decisions and adherence (Dale, Jahoda, & Knott, 2006). Data from this qualitative study support the importance of adopting a culturally responsive practice when working with families by considering families’ perceptions and the core meaning of their experiences (Harry, 2002). That is, a culturally responsive practice helps to ensure that parents are given a voice, permits professionals to understand how parent perceptions may be formed, and allows for professionals to revisit any relevant problems that may interfere with parents’ negotiation of services.

Book excerpt: Decades of research have demonstrated that the parent-child dyad and the environment of the familyâ€"which includes all primary caregiversâ€"are at the foundation of children's well- being and healthy development. From birth, children are learning and rely on parents and the other caregivers in their lives to protect and care for them. The impact of parents may never be greater than during the earliest years of life, when a child's brain is rapidly developing and when nearly all of her or his experiences are created and shaped by parents and the family environment. Parents help children build and refine their knowledge and skills, charting a trajectory for their health and well-being during childhood and beyond. The experience of parenting also impacts parents themselves. For instance, parenting can enrich and give focus to parents' lives; generate stress or calm; and create any number of emotions, including feelings of happiness, sadness, fulfillment, and anger. Parenting of young children today takes place in the context of significant ongoing developments. These include: a rapidly growing body of science on early childhood, increases in funding for programs and services for families, changing demographics of the U.S. population, and greater diversity of family structure. Additionally, parenting is increasingly being shaped by technology and increased access to information about parenting. Parenting Matters identifies parenting knowledge, attitudes, and practices associated with positive developmental outcomes in children ages 0-8; universal/preventive and targeted strategies used in a variety of settings that have been effective with parents of young children and that support the identified knowledge, attitudes, and practices; and barriers to and facilitators for parents' use of practices that lead to healthy child outcomes as well as their participation in effective programs and services. Some of these interventions are evidence-based; others are not. However, previous research has also found that parents select interventions for their children with ASD on the basis of several factors other than the evidence base, including their emotional representations of ASD and their perceptions of the timeline, consequences, and causes of ASD. Other research has found that people's cultural worldviews influence their decision-making on a variety of social and political issues. The current study examined the relationships between these factors and parents' perceptions of the efficacy of evidence-based and non-evidence-based interventions. Contrary to previous research, for parents of children with ASD, perceptions of intervention efficacy were not affected by their emotional representations of ASD or their perceptions of the timeline or consequences of ASD. There was a relationship between parents' perceptions of the causes of ASD and their perceptions of the efficacy of some interventions. Parents' cultural worldview was not related to their perceptions of the efficacy of evidence-based interventions, but was related to their perceptions of non-evidence-based interventions. Further research is needed to determine other factors that influence how parents perceive ASD interventions.

It is critical to demystify the relationships of parents with adult children with ASD, and what their communication on a daily basis looks like. In a planned study, participants will be recruited through social media organizations or service providers. Once participants consent to partake in the study, investigators will provide a demographic survey that will be completed by each participant. Upon completion of the demographic questionnaires, using ecological momentary interventions/assessments, or daily diaries, the study will survey a minimum of 20 parents (maximum of 60) regarding the daily interactions with their adult child with ASD. For the duration of 14 days, the participants will receive and email or text each morning to complete the electronic survey, at the place and time of their convenience, concerning the interaction(s) they had with their child that day. Each survey will take approximately 10-15 minutes or less each and will be asked two or three times throughout the study to complete an interview with principal investigators (PI) over the phone or on Skype/Google Hangout. The current study will present pilot data collected to test the electronic surveys on Qualtrics, a research software, as well as to test the data collection process and the method by which the data should be gathered. One individual, a middle-aged woman, was requested to complete daily diaries over the course of three days. This study evaluated the effectiveness of the methodology to provide critical feedback prior to initiating the full study.
