Book Synopsis History and Its Objects by : Peter N. Miller

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Weaving together literary and scholarly insights, History and Its Objects will prove indispensable reading for historians and cultural historians, as well as anthropologists and archeologists worldwide. — Nathan Schlanger, École nationale des chartes, Paris Cultural history is increasingly informed by the history of material culture—the ways in which individuals or entire societies create and relate to objects both mundane and extraordinary—rather than on textual evidence alone. Books such as The Hare with Amber Eyes and A History of the World in 100 Objects indicate the growing popularity of this way of understanding the past. In History and Its Objects, Peter N. Miller uncovers the forgotten origins of our fascination with exploring the past through its artifacts by highlighting the role of antiquarianism—a pursuit ignored and derided by modem academic history—in grasping the significance of material culture. From the efforts of Renaissance antiquarians, who reconstructed life in the ancient world from coins, inscriptions, seals, and other detritus, to amateur historians in the nineteenth century working within burgeoning national traditions, Miller connects collecting—whether by individuals or institutions—to the professionalization of the historical profession, one which came to regard its progenitors with skepticism and disdain. The struggle to articulate the value of objects as historical evidence, then, lies at the heart both of academic history-writing and of the popular engagement with things. Ultimately, this book demonstrates that our current preoccupation with objects is far from novel and reflects a human need to reexperience the past as a physical presence.

Book excerpt: A group of biblical and patristic scholars and palaeographers met in Lunel, Herault, in June 1995 to discuss the many questions posed by Codex Bezae to our understanding of the use of the Gospels and Acts in early Christianity, and of the text of the New Testament. This collection makes the papers and debates of the colloquium available for a wider discussion. The papers cover two broad areas. The first addresses palaeographical questions. The second covers textual matters, subdivided between the Gospels and Acts. The 24 contributors include J.N. Birdsall, J. Irigoin, L. Holtz, B.D. Ehrman, M.W. Holmes, J.K. Elliott, J.M. Auwers and M.-É. Boismard. There is an introduction by the editors, who also provide analyses of each main section. The range of interests represented by the participants and by the papers has already stimulated fresh developments.

Book Synopsis Luxury Trades and Consumerism in Ancien Régime Paris by : Robert Fox
Download or read book Luxury Trades and Consumerism in Ancien Régime Paris written by Robert Fox and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-12-05 with total page 312 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the 16th century, Paris has been a leading arbiter of taste and the ultimate source of luxury goods for Europe and the world. However, the origins of the luxury trades of Paris and their role in the wider economic development of France and Europe have been relatively little examined by historians. This volume provides an entry into some of the many questions raised by the growth of the luxury trades, by bringing together eight detailed case studies of specific trades with five more wide-ranging and theoretical contributions. It therefore offers both the results of entirely new research and a range of new perspectives and methodological reflections on the subject as a whole. Essential to economic and social historians of Early Modern France, the book will also be of interest to all students of material culture.
