Book excerpt: Phenomenology of Diesel Combustion and Modeling Diesel is the most efficient combustion engine today and it plays an important role in transport of goods and passengers on land and on high seas. The emissions must be controlled as stipulated by the society without sacrificing the legendary fuel economy of the diesel engines. These important drivers caused innovations in diesel engineering like re-entrant combustion chambers in the piston, lower swirl support and high pressure injection, in turn reducing the ignition delay and hence the nitric oxides. The limits on emissions are being continually reduced. The- fore, the required accuracy of the models to predict the emissions and efficiency of the engines is high. The phenomenological combustion models based on physical and chemical description of the processes in the engine are practical to describe diesel engine combustion and to carry out parametric studies. This is because the injection process, which can be relatively well predicted, has the dominant effect on mixture formation and subsequent course of combustion. The need for improving these models by incorporating new developments in engine designs is explained in Chapter 2. With “model based control programs” used in the Electronic Control Units of the engines, phenomenological models are assuming more importance now because the detailed CFD based models are too slow to be handled by the Electronic Control Units. Experimental work is necessary to develop the basic understanding of the pr- esses.

Book excerpt: Instantaneous successive spectral infrared (IR) images were obtained from a spray plume in a direct injection (DI) type compression-ignition (Cl) engine during the compression and combustion periods. The engine eqwpped with a high pressure electronic-controlled fuel injector system was operated by using D-2 Diesel fuel. In the new imaging system used for the present study, four high-speed IR cameras (with respective band filters in front) were lined up to a single optical arrangement containing three spectral beam splitters to obtain four spectral images at once. Two band filters were used for imaging the water vapor distribution and another two band filters were placed for capturing images of combustion chamber wall or soot formation. The simultaneous imaging was successively triggered by signals from an encoder connected to the engine. The fuel injection parameters were precisely controlled and the pressure-time (p-t) history was obtained for individual sets of images. The start of fuel injection was varied through four different crank angle positions. Mentioning some results from the study, the spectral IR images had no resemblance with the ones obtained using a visible-range camera from a comparable engine system as reported by others. In general, the present spectral images taken at the same crank angle were not mutually comparable.

Book excerpt: An experimental visualization study of spray and combustion processes under simulated high-power-density diesel (HPD) combustion conditions is carried out. The scope of work includes characterization of high-pressure injection on test rig, macroscopic and microscopic characterization of non-evaporative sprays in atmosphere ambient condition or in pressurized chamber, and direct visualization of spray and combustion processes inside a single-cylinder optically accessible research engine. The results provide very interesting and dynamic information on spray structure, showing spray angle variations, primary breakup processes, and spray asymmetry under different combinations of injection systems and nozzle geometry. The injection systems tested included electronic unit injector (EUI), hydraulic unit injector (HEUI), and high-pressure common rail (HPCR) with both valve-covered orifice (VCO) and mini-sac nozzles. The near-field spray behavior is shown to strongly depend on the nozzle geometry, needle lift dynamics, and injection pressure, which is a function of the injection system. Some complementary numerical simulations using new transient schemes (space-time method) and primary breakup models (turbulent and cavitational) to better correlate spray and injector design are also discussed. Combustion visualization inside an optically accessible diesel engine equipped with HEUI injection system capable of both single and multi-stage injections was also successfully conducted. Nozzle hole flow area, injection pressure, and length of rate-shaping pipe are the dominating parameters that control the injection rate. The results showed that ignition delay and heat release of pre-mixed combustion is significantly reduced with increase of charge air density and temperature, and with pilot injection.

Book excerpt: Due to the large number of influencing parameters and interactions, the fuel injection and therewith fuel propagation and distribution are among the most complex processes in an internal combustion engine. For this reason, injection is usually the subject to highly detailed numerical modeling, which leads to unacceptably high computing times in the 3D-CFD simulation of a full engine domain. Marlene Wentsch presents a critical analysis, optimization and extension of injection modeling in an innovative, fast response 3D-CFD tool that is exclusively dedicated to the virtual development of internal combustion engines. About the Author Marlene Wentsch works as research associate in the field of 3D-CFD simulations of injection processes at the Institute of Internal Combustion Engines and Automotive Engineering (IVK), University of Stuttgart, Germany.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In order to help design a high-power-density (HPD) low-heat-rejection (LHR) high-injection-fuel (HIP) direct-injection compression-ignition engine (DI-CI, two main methods were employed: (1) engine performance analysis; and (2) in-cylinder imaging. In the performance analysis, a Cummins 903 engine was used. The range of air/fuel ratio studied was from 18-1 to over 35-1, the injection pressure investigated was as high as 30,625 psi (210 Mpa) under varied intake air temperature over 150 deg C. In the in-cylinder imaging, a separate optical single-cylinder Cummins 903 engine was used. A high-speed four-color IR digital imaging system was greatly improved during this contract period. New spectrometric methods were developed to simultaneously determine the distributions of temperature, water vapor and soot concentrations. In addition, a new data analysis and presentation method has been developed. The performance analysis results are reported in two parts: a preliminary report as included in Appendix-I and an additional set of results (Appendix-Ill). Some of the in-cylinder imaging results, which are now being captured by the improved 515 after incorporating with new electronic packages (designed and fabricated in our laboratory), are included with discussions.

Book excerpt: This is the second book edited with a selection of papers from the two-yearly THIESEL Conference on Thermo- and Fluid Dynamic Processes in Diesel Engines, organised by CMT-Mvtores Termicos of the Universidad Po/itecnica de Valencia, Spain. This volume includes versions of papers selected from those presented at the THIESEL 2002 Conference th held on lOth to 13 September 2002. We hope it will be the second volume of a long series reflecting the quality of the THIESEL Conference. This year, the papers are grouped in six main thematic areas: State of the Art and Prospective, Injection Systems and Spray Formation, Combustion and Emissions, Engine Modelling, Alternative Combustion Concepts and Experimental Techniques. The actual conference covered a wider scope of topics, including Air Management and Fuels for Diesel Engines and a couple of papers included reflect this variety. However, the selection of papers published here represents the most current preoccupations of Diesel engine designers, namely how to improve the combustion process using new injection strategies and alternative concepts such as the Homogeneous Charge Combustion Ignition.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Large gains in propulsion system reduction can be achieved by moving closer to stoichiometric combustion in diesel engines. This paper is intended to identify possible fuel injection and combustion strategies to achieve higher diesel engine power density via improved air utilization. The following technology should be addressed for near-term solutions to better air utilization in diesel engines. Utilize high pressure injection equipment that has flexible rate shaping and the smallest possible injector holes. Ideally, fuel injection systems that can control split injections are needed. The appropriate combustion chamber is the quiescent chamber to match the high injection pressures and a shallow combustion bowl. It is necessary to eliminate dead-volumes by moving the top piston ring as close to the crown as possible and reducing the piston-to-cylinder head clearance. If possible, it is advisable to use flush mounted valves and eliminate valve pockets. Increased turbocharger boost would allow smaller engine packaging. Methods to control peak cylinder pressure should be considered. The most promising long-term technology is the Homogeneous Charge Compression Ignition (HCCI) combustion process. Stoichiometric combustion is possible without visible smoke. Further development of this system is necessary for this to be a viable solution.

This book was released on 2011 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An experimental study was performed to provide the combustion and emission characteristics resulting from fuel-reactivity controlled compression ignition (RCCI) combustion mode utilizing dual-fuel approach in a light-duty, multi-cylinder diesel engine. In-cylinder fuel blending using port fuel injection of gasoline before intake valve opening (IVO) and early-cycle, direct injection of diesel fuel was used as the charge preparation and fuel blending strategy. In order to achieve the desired auto-ignition quality through the stratification of the fuel-air equivalence ratio (), blends of commercially available gasoline and diesel fuel were used. Engine experiments were performed at an engine speed of 2300rpm and an engine load of 4.3bar brake mean effective pressure (BMEP). It was found that significant reduction in both nitrogen oxide (NOx) and particulate matter (PM) was realized successfully through the RCCI combustion mode even without applying exhaust gas recirculation (EGR). However, high carbon monoxide (CO) and hydrocarbon (HC) emissions were observed. The low combustion gas temperature during the expansion and exhaust processes seemed to be the dominant source of high CO emissions in the RCCI combustion mode. The high HC emissions during the RCCI combustion mode could be due to the increased combustion quenching layer thickness as well as the -stratification at the periphery of the combustion chamber. The slightly higher brake thermal efficiency (BTE) of the RCCI combustion mode was observed than the other combustion modes, such as the conventional diesel combustion (CDC) mode, and single-fuel, premixed charge compression ignition (PCCI) combustion mode. The parametric study of the RCCI combustion mode revealed that the combustion phasing and/or the peak cylinder pressure rise rate of the RCCI combustion mode could be controlled by several physical parameters premixed ratio (rp), intake swirl intensity, and start of injection (SOI) timing of directly injected fuel unlike other low temperature combustion (LTC) strategies.
