Download or read book Parametric Amplification and Wavelength Conversion written by Robert Elschner and published by Sudwestdeutscher Verlag Fur Hochschulschriften AG. This book was released on 2012-02 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Parametric amplification and wavelength conversion based on four-wave mixing in materials with third-order nonlinearity may find a variety of applications in future high-capacity fiber-optic transmission systems including low-noise amplification with variable gain spectrum and arbitrary center wavelength, nonlinearity compensation during transmission through phase conjugation and contention resolution in network nodes through wavelength conversion. One of the expected key advantages for such devices is the possibility for modulation format and bit rate independent operation enabling transparent networking. The focus of the book is put on the processing of directly and coherently detected phase-shift keying (PSK) formats as well as 16-quadrature amplitude modulation (16-QAM). Devices based on the highly nonlinear fiber (HNLF) and the semiconductor optical amplifier (SOA) are theoretically examined using analytical and numerical calculations. The underlying models are presented in detail within the book. A large part of the book is dedicated to the analysis of different types of phase distortions and its impact on the considered modulation formats in terms of the bit-error rate.

Book Synopsis Ultra-Broadly Tunable Light Sources Based on the Nonlinear Effects in Photonic Crystal Fibers by : Lei Zhang
Download or read book Ultra-Broadly Tunable Light Sources Based on the Nonlinear Effects in Photonic Crystal Fibers written by Lei Zhang and published by Springer. This book was released on 2015-10-14 with total page 105 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This thesis examines laser generation from the ultraviolet to the short edge of the mid-infrared band by exploiting the nonlinear effects in photonic crystal fibers (PCFs). Several different physical mechanisms are investigated by using homemade PCFs with elaborately customized dispersion profiles. A particular focus is on the development of fiber optical parametric amplifiers (FOPAs) and oscillators (FOPOs) based on the PCFs with a zero-dispersion wavelength of ca.1.06 μm. In particular, several schemes are proposed for solving the key problems involved in the application of FOPOs. These oscillators can be made more convenient to use by optimizing the wavelength-tuning mechanisms and made more energy-efficient with the help of specially designed cavity structures. Today’s oscillators are more reliable, powerful and maneuverable than ever. This thesis provides a systematic road map in connection with the study of nonlinear wavelength generation in PCFs, from their fiber design and technical fabrication, to their physical mechanism and experimental investigation.

Book Synopsis Advances in Optical Amplifiers by : Paul Urquhart
Download or read book Advances in Optical Amplifiers written by Paul Urquhart and published by BoD – Books on Demand. This book was released on 2011-02-14 with total page 456 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Optical amplifiers play a central role in all categories of fibre communications systems and networks. By compensating for the losses exerted by the transmission medium and the components through which the signals pass, they reduce the need for expensive and slow optical-electrical-optical conversion. The photonic gain media, which are normally based on glass- or semiconductor-based waveguides, can amplify many high speed wavelength division multiplexed channels simultaneously. Recent research has also concentrated on wavelength conversion, switching, demultiplexing in the time domain and other enhanced functions. Advances in Optical Amplifiers presents up to date results on amplifier performance, along with explanations of their relevance, from leading researchers in the field. Its chapters cover amplifiers based on rare earth doped fibres and waveguides, stimulated Raman scattering, nonlinear parametric processes and semiconductor media. Wavelength conversion and other enhanced signal processing functions are also considered in depth. This book is targeted at research, development and design engineers from teams in manufacturing industry, academia and telecommunications service operators.
