Book excerpt: The Reference Manual on Scientific Evidence, Third Edition, assists judges in managing cases involving complex scientific and technical evidence by describing the basic tenets of key scientific fields from which legal evidence is typically derived and by providing examples of cases in which that evidence has been used. First published in 1994 by the Federal Judicial Center, the Reference Manual on Scientific Evidence has been relied upon in the legal and academic communities and is often cited by various courts and others. Judges faced with disputes over the admissibility of scientific and technical evidence refer to the manual to help them better understand and evaluate the relevance, reliability and usefulness of the evidence being proffered. The manual is not intended to tell judges what is good science and what is not. Instead, it serves to help judges identify issues on which experts are likely to differ and to guide the inquiry of the court in seeking an informed resolution of the conflict. The core of the manual consists of a series of chapters (reference guides) on various scientific topics, each authored by an expert in that field. The topics have been chosen by an oversight committee because of their complexity and frequency in litigation. Each chapter is intended to provide a general overview of the topic in lay terms, identifying issues that will be useful to judges and others in the legal profession. They are written for a non-technical audience and are not intended as exhaustive presentations of the topic. Rather, the chapters seek to provide judges with the basic information in an area of science, to allow them to have an informed conversation with the experts and attorneys.

Book excerpt: CASL, the Common Algebraic Specification Language, was designed by the members of CoFI, the Common Framework Initiative for algebraic specification and development, and is a general-purpose language for practical use in software development for specifying both requirements and design. CASL is already regarded as a de facto standard, and various sublanguages and extensions are available for specific tasks. This reference manual presents a detailed documentation of the CASL specification formalism. It reviews the main underlying concepts, and carefully summarizes the intended meaning of each construct of CASL. The book formally defines both the syntax and semantics of CASL, and presents a logic for reasoning about CASL specifications. Furthermore, extensive libraries of CASL specifications of basic data types are provided as well as a comprehensive annotated bibliography of CoFI publications. As a separate, complementary book LNCS 2900 presents a tutorial introduction to CASL, the CASL User Manual.

Book excerpt: A Practical Framework for Positive Social Change In 1987, Anne Firth Murray had the idea that funding should go to grassroots women's organizations around the globe and that the recipients themselves should decide how to use that money. From that idea, The Global Fund for Women was born. The organization became a major force for good in the world, embodying a new paradigm of philanthropy. In these pages, Murray shares her wisdom, offering guidelines that demonstrate how anyone can turn a clear vision of a better world into reality.

OPEN consists of the OPEN Modeling Language (OML) as well as process, metrics, etc. This book specifies OML, a small but vital component of the complete OPEN method. It uses diagrams, tables, Web references and text to present the syntax, semantics and rationale behind OML. It documents version 1.0 of OML so that object-oriented modelers can learn and use it, and upperCASE vendors can support it.

Topics under this section include logic, set theory, Turing machines, theory of computation, and computational complexity. Part II is a discussion of software development methods, techniques and technology primarily based around a conventional view of the software life cycle. Topics discussed include methods such as CORE, SSADM, and SREM, and formal methods including VDM and Z. Attention is also given to other technical activities in the life cycle including testing and prototyping. The final part describes the techniques and standards which are relevant in producing particular classes of application. Book excerpt: This work follows the 2021 curriculum of the Association for Computing Machinery for specialists in Data Sciences, with the aim of producing a manual that collects notions in a simplified form, facilitating a personal training path starting from specialized skills in Computer Science or Mathematics or Statistics. It has a bibliography with links to quality material but freely usable for your own training and contextual practical exercises. Part of a series of books, it first summarizes the standard CRISP DM working methodology used in this work and in Data Science projects. Since this text uses Orange for the application aspects, it describes its installation and widgets. Then it considers the concept of model, its life cycle and the relationship with measures and metrics. The data modeling phase is considered from the point of view of machine learning by deepening the types of machine learning, the types of models, the types of problems and the types of algorithms. After considering the ideal characteristics of models and algorithms, a vocabulary of the types of models and algorithms is compiled and their use in Orange is considered through two supervised and unsupervised projects respectively. The text is accompanied by supporting material and you can download the samples in Orange and the test data.
