Book Synopsis The Spirit-Paraclete in the Gospel of John by : George Johnston
Download or read book The Spirit-Paraclete in the Gospel of John written by George Johnston and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2005-10-06 with total page 212 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book attempts to make a contribution to the New Testament doctrine of the Spirit, with special reference to the paraclete problem. Dr Johnston begins with the use of the word 'spirit' in the Gospel of John and treats it as primarily 'impersonal'. It denotes divine power or energy. God acts by his spirit, both to create and to redeem. The Fourth Evangelist shows Jesus as the incarnate Word, a man uniquely inspired, whose absence after death is compensated for by an outburst of spiritual powers in his Church. The paraclete is representative of God or of Christ, and the Johannine teaching is that no angelmediator, no holy 'spirit' like the Archangel Michael, can take Christ's place. But truly inspired leaders - acting as teachers, exegetes, martyrs - and the inspired Church itself as a communion of love do embody the spirit-paraclete and do continue to represent Jesus. Special attention is paid to recent research on this subject, mainly in the area of the Dead Sea Scrolls. Dr Johnston argues that in insisting that the true spirit-paraclete must always exalt and interpret Jesus of Nazareth as the final revelation of God in man, John was in fact combating heretical views.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This essential introduction to Judaism’s notions of spirit as they relate to God is designed to inform both Jews and Christians who are studying what it means when we say that God is spirit. Exploring the Hebrew Bible, Midrash, and other rabbinic writings, Rabbi Timoner uncovers surprising insights about how God as spirit influences Jewish ideas of creation, revelation, and redemption. Written with an accessible and engaging voice, full of stories and relevant teachings, Breath of Life speaks to lay readers and scholars alike, as it pursues a new perspective on Judaism’s sacred texts. This book promises Christian readers meaningful insights on their own notions of God as Holy Spirit while giving Jewish readers a new look at their own tradition. "In easy but deceptively profound language, Rachel Timoner deftly savors the essential unknowability of God, the ubiquity of Torah and the mystery of redemption. She’s given us an immensely literate and serious, contemporary Jewish theology. Breath of Life is a spiritual tour de force.” -Rabbi Lawrence Kushner, Scholar in residence at Congregation Emanu-El of San Francisco, and author of many books including Kabbalah: A Love Story "Any reader keen to cultivate a robust spirituality should read this little book. Jews and Christians may discover here something to talk about—scriptures we share and a quality of God we have in common.” -John R. Book Synopsis The Paraclete of Caborca by : Paco Mitchell
Download or read book The Paraclete of Caborca written by Paco Mitchell and published by . This book was released on 2020-07-24 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In September 1963, a few weeks before starting their senior years in college, two twenty-year-old pals, Paco and Phil, decided to take an impromptu vacation by driving from Southern California to Mexico. As their plan took shape, they figured that a beach-and-body-surfing trip to Mazatlán would fit the bill nicely. "It'll be a blast," they thought. They didn't have much money to spare, but Phil's VW sedan got good mileage, and gas was cheap then. They could save on motels by sleeping on a deserted beach. Plus, they both spoke some Spanish-Paco was even a Spanish major-so it seemed like a natural fit. And why not? Mexico! Spanish! Fun! Before their vacation was over, however, the blast they received was not the one they were expecting. And what got set in motion because of that trip, especially for Paco, is his tale to tell, since he was impacted not only visibly, but deeply, by the adventure. Now, more than half a century has passed. The Paraclete of Caborca tells the story of what Paco experienced over the decades since that fateful trip, in an uncanny series of dreams, synchronistic events and insights, and the deep meanings and purposes that revealed themselves along the way.
Download or read book Keller's Heart written by John Gray and published by Paraclete Press. This book was released on 2019-02-01 with total page 41 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collection draws heavily from the core devotional strain in Miller’s poetry, offering what novelist Fenton Johnson described in his review of Iron Wheel as “the vision and experience of that place where dark merges seamlessly into light; the house and home of grace—unasked for and perhaps undeserved, but transformative all the same.” Framed by meditations on the beginnings and possible post-human ends of culture, the new poems reflect on the callings and limits of art in responding to desire, history, mortality, and injustice. Set in the American South, Wales, France, the Czech Republic, and Sudan, the poems address and invoke the divine.

Book Synopsis Paraclete the Advocate by : Lonnie D. Mills
Download or read book Paraclete the Advocate written by Lonnie D. Mills and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2018-02-22 with total page 348 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When Jesus ascended to heaven to be on the right side of the Father, He left believers a comforter or an advocate called the Paracleteor the Holy Spiritto act in defense against the wiles of Satan. In Paraclete the Advocate, author Lonnie D. Mills looks to the Word of God to show that salvation is received by grace through faith in Jesus Christs atonement, which will eventually lead to a heavenly eternal life. As Jesus was ascending to heaven, He made a difficult command to his disciples that he wanted them to be witnesses for him throughout the world, and he said they would be able to do this when the power of the Holy Spirit had come upon them. Paraclete the Advocate explains this power of the Holy Spirit and why it is important for Christians to accept the truth of the Trinity. This is a sinful world, and by faith, repentance, prayer, and guidance by the Paraclete, it is not too late to receive salvation by the free gift God provided by his Sons atoning work on the cross. Everyone can receive the free gift of justification by Gods act, whereby righteousness is restored and guilt and the penalty of sin are wiped clean. Christian believers who find scripture difficult to comprehend should pray to seek understanding and guidance from the Paraclete.
