Book excerpt: A BESTSELLER IN CANADA -- NOW IN TRADE PAPERBACK This is the story of an authentic Canadian hero, a man whose courage and determination saved the lives of countless soldiers and civilians in the besieged mountains of Yugoslavia during the Second World War. On the night of May 12, 1944, Major Colin Scott Dafoe -- a surgeon on assignment with Britain's Special Operations Executive -- parachuted into eastern Bosnia. His mission was to provide medical aid to the men and women who were Marshal Tito's Partisans. In a makeshift hospital constructed from parachutes, Dafoe operated on the maimed and wounded. And when an enemy offensive forced the Partisans into the rugged mountains and dense forests, Dafoe and his portable parachute ward followed, operating in the field of combat. Based on Dafoe's own record of his wartime mission, and through the reminiscences of his family, friends, and colleagues, The Parachute Ward recounts the saga of a truly remarkable man.

Book excerpt: 'Riveting . . . Full of daring action, standout characters and cutting edge operations, this is unputdownable' Damien Lewis 'Gripping and authoritative. Family men, circus performers, solicitors, communists, and reactionaries all fought together and shed blood for their country - a true and moving story of war' Andy McNab ------------------------------------ Their German enemies called them the 'Red Devils'. Montgomery described them as 'men apart - every man an Emperor'. The cards they received on qualifying began: 'You are the elite of the British army'. The Parachute Regiment. In this gripping, authorized account, bestselling historian Mark Urban tells the story of the wartime creation and development of Britain's elite airborne infantry - who ranged from circus performers to solicitors, policemen to gravediggers, Christians and Jews to communists. Through the fates of six men - including recently widowed Geoffrey Pine-Coffin, who had to leave his little boy at home to head to the front, and Mike Lewis, whose photographs became iconic images of war - Urban vividly shows what it took to succeed in this new regiment. All six men would shed blood for their country in daring actions at D-Day, Arnhem and across the Second World War; two would not survive, and one would face disgrace. Based on deep archival research, British and German sources and new material from the men's families, and giving overdue recognition to the North African campaign, Urban's unvarnished history is a compelling and moving depiction of the highs and lows of battle.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Leading the Way to Victory is the official history of the 60th Troop Carrier Group, featuring unpublished first-person accounts by participating veterans and expertly written by retired USAF Colonel Mark C. Vlahos, combat veteran and former Vice Wing Commander of 314th Airlift Wing at the Little Rock Air Force Base. The December 7, 1941, surprise attack on Pearl Harbor thrust the United States into World War II. Just six months later in May 1942, flying new C-47 transport aircraft, the 60th Troop Carrier Group led the way as the first U.S. TCG to deploy to England and the European Theater of Operations in World War II. Leading the way to victory, the 60th TCG’s first mission—dropping U. S. paratroopers outside of Oran, North Africa—was not only the first combat airborne mission in U.S. Army history, but also the longest airborne mission of the entire war. This drop spearheaded Operation TORCH, also known as the Invasion of North Africa, by taking key Axis airfields just inland from the amphibious landing zones. The 60th TCG went on to fly some of the first combat aeromedical evacuation missions and the first combat mission towing CG-4A “Waco” gliders during Operation HUSKY—the Invasion of Sicily. As the new airborne, air land, aeromedical evacuation, and glider missions matured in World War II, the 60th TCG continued to play a major role, paying in blood for valuable lessons learned in the school of hard knocks. The group later flew dramatic missions into Yugoslavia, supporting Partisans as part of the secret war in the Balkans, an episode of World War II history still all but unknown today and dropped British paratroops in the airborne invasion of Greece. The Group was inactivated at the end of the war. Drawing on official United States Army Air Forces microfilm records, operational records in the National Archives, photographs from both collections, published historical materials, and many personal accounts, author Mark C. Vlahos’ expertly written and highly readable volume is certain to become the standard history and go-to reference for the 60th TCG. This work offers scholars and lay readers alike an authoritative, informative, and engaging saga of the Group’s battles, adversity, hardships, and triumphs from inception through the Allied victory in Europe.

Book excerpt: "Sand and Steel gives us D-Day, arguably the greatest and most consequential military operation of modern times, beginning with the years of painstaking and costly preparation, through to the pitched battles fought along France's northern coast, from Omaha Beach to the Falaise and the push east to Strasbourg. In addition to covering the build-up to the invasion, including the elaborate and lavish campaigns to deceive Germans as to where and when the invasion would take place, Peter Caddick-Adams gives a full and detailed account of the German preparations, but the heart of the book is Caddick-Adams' narratives of the five beaches where the terrible drama played out--Utah, Omaha, Gold, Juno, and Sword, and the attempt by American, British, and Canadian soldiers to gain a foothold in Europe"--

Book excerpt: VS-931 Antisubmarine Squadron is a true story which describes the intensive training and tactics used in the search for enemy submarines during the Korean War. The danger of carrier operations, training missions and problems with equipment is born out by numerous close calls and crashes. Sometimes these unpredictable mishaps resulted in injury or death of carrier personnel and flight crews. The humor among squadron personnel often served as relief from the intense, long hour teamwork that was continuously required. When the job at hand was finally completed, service personnel always looked for some way to have fun.
