Book Synopsis Luso-American Literature by : Robert Henry Moser
Download or read book Luso-American Literature written by Robert Henry Moser and published by Rutgers University Press. This book was released on 2011 with total page 415 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Portuguese and Cape Verdean immigrants have had a significant presence in North America since the nineteenth century. Recently, Brazilians have also established vibrant communities in the U.S. This anthology brings together, for the first time in English, the writings of these diverse Portuguese-speaking, or "Luso-American" voices. Historically linked by language, colonial experience, and cultural influence, yet ethnically distinct, Luso-Americans have often been labeled an "invisible minority." This collection seeks to address this lacuna, with a broad mosaic of prose, poetry, essays, memoir, and other writings by more than fifty prominent literary figures--immigrants and their descendants, as well as exiles and sojourners. It is an unprecedented gathering of published, unpublished, forgotten, and translated writings by a transnational community that both defies the stereotypes of ethnic literature, and embodies the drama of the immigrant experience.

Book Synopsis The Literary Institution in Portugal Since the Thirties by : Margarida Rendeiro
Download or read book The Literary Institution in Portugal Since the Thirties written by Margarida Rendeiro and published by Peter Lang. This book was released on 2010 with total page 398 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Despite the numerous studies of the politics, economy, culture, and society of the Estado Novo, the relations established between publishers, authors, and governmental institutions and their contribution to the making of the literary canon are still marginal subjects of analysis. Based on the systems theories developed by Bourdieu, Dubois and Even-Zohar, this study focuses on the cultural production produced during the Estado Novo (1933-1974) and after the Revolution (1974-2004), within their political, economic and social framework. The chapters on José Saramago and José Luís Peixoto show them as examples of literary consecration that confirm the systemic relations in the Portuguese literary field. This research makes use of a survey on habits of purchase of Portuguese fiction, interviews with publishers, original statistical analyses, and takes a new approach to the study of Portuguese literature.
Book Synopsis Museums and the Working Class by : Adele Chynoweth
Download or read book Museums and the Working Class written by Adele Chynoweth and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2021-09-28 with total page 211 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Museums and the Working Class is the first book to take an intersectional and international approach to the issues of economic diversity and class within the field of museum studies. Bringing together 16 contributors from eight countries, this book has emerged from the significant global dialogue concerning museums’ obligation to be inclusive, participate in meaningful engagement and advocate for social change. As part of the push for museums to be more accessible and inclusive, museums have been challenged to critically examine their power relationships and how these are played out in what they collect, whose stories they exhibit and who is made to feel welcome in their halls. This volume will further this professional and academic debate through the discussion of class. Contributions to the book will also reinforce the importance of the working class – not only in collection and exhibition policy, but also for the organisational psychology of institutions. Museums and the Working Class is essential reading for scholars and students of museum, gallery and heritage studies, cultural studies, sociology, labour studies and history. It will also serve as a source of honest and research-led inspiration to practitioners working in museums, galleries, libraries, archives and at heritage sites around the world.

Download or read book Lisbon written by John Laidlar and published by Oxford, England : Clio Press. This book was released on 1997 with total page 332 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Lisbon's relative proximity to Africa led to a prolonged period of Moorish occupation until 1147. The city enjoyed untold wealth during the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries but was devastated by the earthquake in 1755. Portugal's accession to the European Community and Lisbon's subsequent choice both as the European City of Culture (1994) and as the site for the international Expo '98 have brought the city into the European mainstream.
