This book was released on 2013-11-13 with total page 280 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume contains papers based on talks delivered at the Third Workshop on Quantum Field Theory under the /nftuence of External Conditions held at the University of Leipzig from September 18th to September 22nd, 1995. This series of Workshops is organized by the quantum field theory group at the University of Leipzig. The first and the second Workshop in the row have been held in 1989 and 1992. The present meeting has been joined by more than 70 participants. This fact underlines the vivid interest in the field covered by the Workshop ranging from the Casimir effect to semiclassical gravity. The material of this volume is organized along five subjects. The first part is devoted to the Casimir effect itself. The actual interest is mostly in non-stationary boundaries and a possible explanation of the phenomenon of sonoluminescence - a still open and challenging question. The second part deals with QED and QCD in external fields. The main interest was focused on the effective action approach, on some aspects of the bag model and on quantum effects in a conical background. The ground state in external fields is studied in the contributions of the third part. They demonstrate that the zeta function regularization tagether with the heat kerne! expansion is the most powerful method at present. New calculations of functional determinants, of finite temperature effects and an interesting method applicable in the presence of smooth background fields are presented.

This book was released on 2010 with total page 563 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: QFEXT is the leading international conference held every two years, highlighting progress in quantum vacuum energy phenomena, the Casimir effect, and related topics, both experimentally and theoretically. Most of the key players in the field are expected to be present. Thus the proceedings will be the definitive source of information on this field, which is playing an increasingly important role in nanotechnology and in understanding fundamental issues in physics such as renormalization and in the search for new physics such as fifth forces and dark energy. Proceedings of previous conferences in this series have been important, and like the conferences they summarize, have led to major progress in the two subsequent years. This is because, the fundamental aspects of quantum field theory; applications of all branches of physics, chemistry, nanoscience, and astrophysics; mathematical and experimental techniques described have wide applications and all leading groups and scientists working in this field will be represented.

This book was released on 2008-10-22 with total page 216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book contains a collection of essays written in honor of Wolfhart Zimmermann's 80th birthday, most of them based on talks presented at a symposium in his honor. The book shows the unifying force of a subject (Quantum Field Theory) and a person (Zimmermann). It ranges from fundamental questions in quantum physics over applications to particle physics and noncommutative geometry to the latest developments in many body theory and dynamical systems. These key ideas are elucidated by worldwide-recognized experts including Faddeev, Becchi, Buchholz, Lowenstein and Salmhofer.Readers seeking examples on how a subject has evolved, diversified and deepened over the course of several decades and how a single person can influence this process can find here a perfect illustration. Altogether, readers are treated to a high-brow intellectual adventure.

Download or read book New Developments in Quantum Field Theory written by Poul Henrik Damgaard and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2006-04-11 with total page 360 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Quantum field theory is one of most central constructions in 20th century th- retical physics, and it continues to develop rapidly in many different directions. The aim of the workshop “New Developments in Quantum Field Theory”, which was held in Zakopane, Poland, June 14-20, 1997, was to capture a broad selection of the most recent advances in this field. The conference was sponsored by the Scientific and - vironmental Affairs Division of NATO, as part of the Advanced Research Workshop series. This book contains the proceedings of that meeting. Major topics covered at the workshop include quantized theories of gravity, string theory, conformal field theory, cosmology, field theory approaches to critical phenomena and the renormalization group, matrix models, and field theory techniques applied to the theory of turbulence. One common theme at the conference was the use of large-Nmatrix models to obtain exact results in a variety of different disciplines. For example, it has been known for several years that by taking a suitable double-scaling limit, certain string theories (or two-dimensional quantum gravity coupled to matter) can be re-obtained from the large-Nexpansion of matrix models. There continues to be a large activity in this area of research, which was well reflected by talks given at our workshop. Remarkably, large- Nmatrix models have very recently – just a few months before our meeting – been shown to have yet another deep relation to string theory.
Book Synopsis Spectral Methods in Quantum Field Theory by : Noah Graham

This book was released on 2009-05-08 with total page 187 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this monograph we apply scattering theory methods to calculations in quantum ?eld theory, with a particular focus on properties of the quantum vacuum. These methods will provide e?cient and reliable solutions to a - riety of problems in quantum ?eld theory. Our approach will also elucidate in a concrete context many of the subtleties of quantum ?eld theory, such as divergences, regularization, and renormalization, by connecting them to more familiar results in quantum mechanics. We will use tools of scattering theory to characterize the spectrum of energyeigenstatesinapotentialbackground, hencethetermspectralmethods. This mode spectrum comprises both discrete bound states and a continuum of scattering states. We develop a powerful formalism that parameterizes the e?ects of the continuum by the density of states, which we compute from scattering data. Summing the zero-point energies of these modes gives the energy of the quantum vacuum, which is one of the central quantities we study.Althoughthemostcommonlystudiedbackgroundpotentialsarisefrom static soliton solutions to the classical equations of motion, these methods are not limited to such cases.

Book Synopsis Quantum Hall Effects: Field Theoretical Approach And Related Topics by : Zyun Francis Ezawa
Download or read book Quantum Hall Effects: Field Theoretical Approach And Related Topics written by Zyun Francis Ezawa and published by World Scientific Publishing Company. This book was released on 2000-11-15 with total page 533 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tremendous theoretical and experimental developments have recently been made in the sphere of the quantum Hall effect. Among them a field-theoretical approach has presented a fascinating unified physical picture. A most significant feature of the quantum Hall system is that exotic phenomena associated with statistics transmutation are realized. For instance, an electron may undergo Bose condensation by making a charge-flux composite, and fractionally charged excitations (anyons) emerge as quasiparticles. A pedagogical and self-contained discussion on monolayer and bilayer quantum Hall systems is given in a field-theoretical framework, together with an introduction to quantum field theory, anyon physics and Chern-Simons gauge theory. Only knowledge of quantum mechanics is assumed. This invaluable book will be of great interest to students and researchers in condensed-matter, theoretical, particle and mathematical physics.

Book Synopsis Nonlocal Quantum Field Theory and Stochastic Quantum Mechanics by : Khavtgain Namsrai
Download or read book Nonlocal Quantum Field Theory and Stochastic Quantum Mechanics written by Khavtgain Namsrai and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 1986 with total page 454 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: over this stochastic space-time leads to the non local fields considered by G. V. Efimov. In other words, stochasticity of space-time (after being averaged on a large scale) as a self-memory makes the theory nonlocal. This allows one to consider in a unified way the effect of stochasticity (or nonlocality) in all physical processes. Moreover, the universal character of this hypothesis of space-time at small distances enables us to re-interpret the dynamics of stochastic particles and to study some important problems of the theory of stochastic processes [such as the relativistic description of diffusion, Feynman type processes, and the problem of the origin of self-turbulence in the motion of free particles within nonlinear (stochastic) mechanics]. In this direction our approach (Part II) may be useful in recent developments of the stochastic interpretation of quantum mechanics and fields due to E. Nelson, D. Kershaw, I. Fenyes, F. Guerra, de la Pena-Auerbach, J. -P. Vigier, M. Davidson, and others. In particular, as shown by N. Cufaro Petroni and J. -P. Vigier, within the discussed approach, a causal action-at-distance interpretation of a series of experiments by A. Aspect and his co-workers indicating a possible non locality property of quantum mechanics, may also be obtained. Aspect's results have recently inspired a great interest in different nonlocal theories and models devoted to an understanding of the implications of this nonlocality. This book consists of two parts.
