Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1993, the author, Shuji Nakamura developed the first commercially available blue and green light-emitting diodes. Now he has made the most important breakthrough in solid state laser techniques to date - the first blue semiconductor laser based on GaN. Here, Dr. Nakamura discusses the physical concept and basic manufacturing technology of these new blue light-emitting and laser diodes. he shows how this represents a new era in commercial applications for semiconductors, including displays, road and railway signalling, lighting, scanners, optical data storage, and much more. Moreover, Nakamura provides fascinating background information on the extraordinary realisation of an extremely successful concept of research and development. Of interest to researchers as well as engineers.

Download or read book Silicon Light-Emitting Diodes and Lasers written by Motoichi Ohtsu and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-06-12 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book focuses on a novel phenomenon named photon breeding. It is applied to realizing light-emitting diodes and lasers made of indirect-transition-type silicon bulk crystals in which the light-emission principle is based on dressed photons. After presenting physical pictures of dressed photons and dressed-photon phonons, the principle of light emission by using dressed-photon phonons is reviewed. A novel phenomenon named photon breeding is also reviewed. Next, the fabrication and operation of light emitting diodes and lasers are described The role of coherent phonons in these devices is discussed. Finally, light-emitting diodes using other relevant crystals are described and other relevant devices are also reviewed.

Book Synopsis The Principles of Semiconductor Laser Diodes and Amplifiers by : H. Ghafouri-Shiraz
Download or read book The Principles of Semiconductor Laser Diodes and Amplifiers written by H. Ghafouri-Shiraz and published by World Scientific Publishing Company. This book was released on 2004 with total page 673 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Optical communications technology is growing increasingly in importance, with a rapid pace of development. Innovative optical devices have emerged from the integration of semiconductor laser diodes, amplifiers and filters with optical waveguide technology. This well-researched volume traces the evolution of semiconductor laser amplifiers (SLAs) from these technologies. Focusing on the principle applications of SLAs, the author illustrates the growing importance of these functional components in the future of optical communications systems. This book will provide engineering and science students with a basic understanding of laser diode and optical amplification through the analysis of the performance characteristics of these devices both in theory and application. Practising device engineers wishing to consolidate their knowledge in lightwave technology will also find this book an invaluable reference.
