Book excerpt: Excerpt from Pantheistic Dilemmas and Other Essays in Philosophy and Religion Most of the themes considered in this volume are associated with important issues in the intellectual and religious world of to-day. Bahaism may appear to be an exception, but it has a measure of interest as being a most ambitious scheme of religious syncretism which has found adherents and propagators in this country. It affords, moreover, a natural occasion to test the claims of the Mohammedanism from which it originated and to which it accords a certain preference among religious antecedents. In the composition of the essays the aim has been twofold: on the one hand exposition, and on the other criticism or valuation. The author would express the hope that the former aim has been executed with such fairness that even the reader who is not in full sympathy with the manner in which the second aim is fulfilled in some instances may still find not a little which is suited to command his approval. In India, Persia, China, Greece, Rome, Pantheism flourished; now under a religious, and then under a philosophical form. After the Christian era it was the religion or system Of' those who did not understand the Christian dogmas as taught by the church and the fathers Of the first centuries, in battling against Gnosticism, Eclecticism, and Neoplat onism, were struggling with this Old error Of the world - Pantheism. Depressed for awhile by the efforts of the doctors of the church, it arose with fiercer energy under the forms of all those here sies which attacked the dogma of the Incarna tion of the Word. Book excerpt: Many people who do not believe in God believe that 'everything is God' - that everything is part of an all-inclusive divine unity. In Pantheism, this concept is presented as a legitimate position and its philosophical basis is examined. Michael Levine compares it to theism, and discusses the scope for resolving the problems inherent in theism through pantheism. He also considers the implications of pantheism in terms of practice. This book will appeal to those who study philosophy or theology. It will also be of interest to anyone who does not believe in a personal God, but does have faith in a higher unifying force, and is interested in the justification of this as a legitimate system of thought.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Pantheism and Christianity Nearly all writers on Pantheism trace its origin to India M. Maret reaches the climax of his argument against the French philosophers, by Showing that their doctrines came from India, 'the mother of superstitions.' Pierre Leroux, one of Maret's ablest Opponents, admitted the fact of his agreement on many subjects with the Indian sages, and added, with an air of triumph, that all religions and all philosophies have their root' in India, and that had Pantheism not been found in India that would have been a strong argument against its truth, for then humanity would have erred in its beginning.' In India the creed of modern intellect is combined with the worship of an infinity of gods. This is the problem of the Indian religion; this is the puzzle on every Hindu temple. When this problem is solved for Hinduism, there will be light shed on a similar problem that presents itself in nearly all religions. M. Leroux again truly says, 'the religion of India does not concern India alone it concerns humanity.' The history of men's thoughts on the greatest questions on which they can be exercised, God and creation, is every where substantially the same. There may be different stages of progress, the development may be checked or stunted, there may be abnormal growth; but however great the phenomenal variety, there is always a real identity. It is in India that we can trace the fullest development of religious thought. The continuity is less broken. We seem here at the fountain-head of natural religion, and can follow the stream flowing onward with but little interruption to where we now stand. In other countries, the succession has passed from one nation to another, and its course cannot always be traced; but in India the connection is visible between the first men capable of worship, and the latest and best thoughts of the furthest-reaching philosophies, as well as the worst developments of the popular religion. Book excerpt: In my earlier works, "Discovering God Through Nature: A Pantheist's Journey" and its add-on, "Cosmic Harmonism: The Oneness of God and Nature," I explored the philosophical underpinnings of pantheism, delving into its metaphysics, ontology, epistemology, ethics, and eschatology. Building on this foundation, this book shifts focus towards theological dilemmas, offering a pantheistic perspective on issues traditionally addressed by theistic religions such as Christianity, Judaism, and Islam. This book also defends the pantheistic worldview against potential philosophical attacks coming from theistic presuppositionalists. This exploration addresses profound questions including the problem of suffering, divine hiddenness, the concept of hell, and the reconciliation of divine sovereignty with human responsibility, alongside the challenges posed by divine attributes. While some of these topics were touched upon in my previous books, here they are examined in greater depth. This book is structured as a compilation of multiple independent essays, each presenting a detailed exploration of key aspects of pantheism. While each essay stands on its own, collectively they reinforce a comprehensive understanding of pantheistic philosophy and theology. This format allows for an in-depth discussion of specific theological and philosophical issues, enabling readers to engage with each topic thoroughly and independently from others. This compilation not only showcases my thoughts on pantheism but also provides a versatile approach for readers to explore topics of particular interest in detail, contributing to a deeper and more coherent understanding of the pantheistic worldview.

Book excerpt: This Element focuses on some core conceptual and ontological issues related to pantheistic conceptions of God by engaging with recent work in analytic philosophy of religion on this topic. The conceptual and ontological commitments of pantheism are contrasted with those of other conceptions of God. The concept of God assumed by pantheism is clarified and the question about what type of unity the universe must exhibit in order to be identical with God receives the most attention. It is argued that the sort of unity the universe must display is the sort of unity characteristic of conscious cognitive systems. Some alternative ontological frameworks for grounding such cognitive unity are considered. Further, the question of whether God can be understood as personal on pantheism is explored.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Pantheist: Or the Dial of Progress On a certain occasion when Themistocles of Greece was making a Speech to his people, his life was endangered by the violence of a mob. Says he, Strike, but hear me. I court as much forbearance from the reader, when in the course of these writings, I make innovations on his preconceived Opinions, by exposing their folly, and showing up his per sistent inconsistency. Jefferson said, It is right to tolerate error when reason is left free to combat it, and every one who has the capacity to reason, and who has any confidence that his opinions are right, must sub scribe to this principle; and it presumes that there are no privileged in dividuals or favored classes who have the right to say for others what is truth.or what is error, but that all alike have the right not only to think for themselves, but to assert or write any Opinion so long as it can be maintained by reason. I rejoice to believe that reason is king over nearly all questions in most countries at this time; but it is to be as much de plored that religion is not, nor ever was governed by reason, but still con tinues to trample it under foot. Religion has usurped the crown, but I shall in the following pages endeavor to restore it to its legitimate inher itor. I am aware, however, that the bigot, feeling the weakness of his cause, has found it proper to place religion above reason, and that in mat ters spiritual, he wants nothing to do with reason. He is joined to his idols and like J efi'. Davis, all he wants is to be let alone. Mahomet said, if the mountain would not come to him, he would go to it, and this is the language of reason to religion. If truth is mighty and will prevail, its empire is destined to be universal, and religion, too, must eventually bow its head to its mild sceptre.
