Book excerpt: Pantheism, i.e. the doctrine that "God is everything and everything is God" is not only a philosophical theory in the history of Indian thought, but it is a part of the way of life with every religious-minded Indian. So, for the study of pantheism one has to turn to India. Here one can find pantheism in its purest form and as a mode of thought with which one is brought into constant contact in daily life.

This book was released on 2017-03-17 with total page 337 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The British idealists of the late 19th and early 20th century are best known for their contributions to metaphysics, logic, and political philosophy. Yet they also made important contributions to social and public policy, social and moral philosophy and moral education, as shown by this volume. Their views are not only important in their own right, but also bear on contemporary discussion in public policy and applied ethics. Among the authors discussed are Green, Caird, Ritchie, Bradley, Bosanquet, Jones, McTaggart, Pringle-Pattison, Webb, Ward, Mackenzie, Hetherington, Muirhead, Collingwood and Oakeshott. The writings of idealist philosophers from Canada, South Africa, and India are also examined. Contributors include Avital Simhony, Darin Nesbitt, Carol A. Keene, Stamatoula Panagakou, David Boucher, Leslie Armour, Jan Olof Bengtsson, Thom Brooks, James Connelly, Philip MacEwen, Efraim Podoksik, Elizabeth Trott and William Sweet.

Book Synopsis Minds Without Fear by : Nalini Bhushan
Download or read book Minds Without Fear written by Nalini Bhushan and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2017 with total page 345 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Minds Without Fear is an intellectual and cultural history of India during the period of British occupation. It demonstrates that this was a period of renaissance in India in which philosophy--both in the public sphere and in the Indian universities--played a central role in the emergence of a distinctively Indian modernity. This is also a history of Indian philosophy. It demonstrates how the development of a secular philosophical voice facilitated the construction of modern Indian society and the consolidation of the nationalist movement. Authors Nalini Bhushan and Jay Garfield explore the complex role of the English language in philosophical and nationalist discourse, demonstrating both the anxieties that surrounded English, and the processes that normalized it as an Indian vernacular and academic language. Garfield and Bhushan attend to both Hindu and Muslim philosophers, to public and academic intellectuals, to artists and art critics, and to national identity and nation-building. Also explored is the complex interactions between Indian and European thought during this period, including the role of missionary teachers and the influence of foreign universities in the evolution of Indian philosophy. This pattern of interaction, although often disparaged as "inauthentic" is continuous with the cosmopolitanism that has always characterized the intellectual life of India, and that the philosophy articulated during this period is a worthy continuation of the Indian philosophical tradition.

Book Synopsis Comparative and Intercultural Philosophy by : Hans Lenk
Download or read book Comparative and Intercultural Philosophy written by Hans Lenk and published by LIT Verlag Münster. This book was released on 2009 with total page 222 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The volume documents the results of the Annual Meeting of the International Institute of Philosophy at the occasion of the World Congress of Philosophy 2008 in Seoul. Logically, systematic and methodological differences and comparisons between cultural traditions are analyzed from a multicultural perspective. General challenges of multiculturalism for "world philosophy" are analyzed from ethical and ontological approaches, e.g. of ancient Chinese and Greek philosophy. Historical studies regarding influences and "migrations" of philosophical texts across different cultures as well as religious and human rights debates about tolerance are topical themes. In addition, the question is raised whether logical principles are cross-culturally valid.
