Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There has been growing academic interest in local food plants. This is a subject that lies at the frontiers of knowledge of various areas, such as environmental sciences, nutrition, public health, and humanities. To date, however, we do not have a book bringing these multi-disciplinary perspectives to bear on this complex field. This book presents the current state of knowledge on local Brazilian food plants through a multidisciplinary approach, including an overview of food plants in Brazil, as well as comprehensive nutritional data. It compiles basic theories on the interrelationship between biodiversity and food and nutrition security, as well as ethnobotanical knowledge of local Brazilian food plants. Additionally, this title provides various methods of learning and teaching the subject, including through social media, artificial intelligence, and through workshops, among others.

Book excerpt: In this sweeping chronicle of guarana—a glossy-leaved Amazonian vine packed with more caffeine than any other plant—Seth Garfield develops a wide-ranging approach to the history of Brazil itself. The story begins with guarana as the pre-Columbian cultivar of the Satere-Mawe people in the Lower Amazon region, where it figured centrally in the Indigenous nation's origin stories, dietary regimes, and communal ceremonies. During subsequent centuries of Portuguese colonialism and Brazilian rule, guarana was reformulated by settlers, scientists, folklorists, food technologists, and marketers. Whether in search of pleasure, profits, professional distinction, or patriotic markers, promoters imparted new meanings to guarana and found new uses for it. Today, it is the namesake ingredient of a multibillion-dollar soft drink industry and a beloved national symbol. Guarana's journey elucidates human impacts on Amazonian ecosystems; the circulation of knowledge, goods, and power; and the promise of modernity in Latin America's largest nation. For Garfield, the beverage's history reveals not only the structuring of inequalities in Brazil but also the mythmaking and ordering of social practices that constitute so-called traditional and modern societies.

Special focus has been given to fermented fruits and vegetables as it is part of the genetic heritage of the South American continent. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Few aspects of American military history have been as vigorously debated as Harry Truman's decision to use atomic bombs against Japan. In this carefully crafted volume, Michael Kort describes the wartime circumstances and thinking that form the context for the decision to use these weapons, surveys the major debates related to that decision, and provides a comprehensive collection of key primary source documents that illuminate the behavior of the United States and Japan during the closing days of World War II. Kort opens with a summary of the debate over Hiroshima as it has evolved since 1945. He then provides a historical overview of thye events in question, beginning with the decision and program to build the atomic bomb. Detailing the sequence of events leading to Japan's surrender, he revisits the decisive battles of the Pacific War and the motivations of American and Japanese leaders. Finally, Kort examines ten key issues in the discussion of Hiroshima and guides readers to relevant primary source documents, scholarly books, and articles.

Book excerpt: Sustainable Public Food Procurement (PFP) represents a key game changer for food systems transformation. It can influence both food consumption and food production patterns. It can deliver multiple social, economic and environmental benefits towards sustainable food systems for healthy diets. This publication aims to contribute to the improved understanding, dissemination and use of PFP as a development tool in particular in the case of school meals programmes. In Volume 1, researchers, policymakers and development partners can find evidence on how PFP can be used as a development tool and deliver multiple benefits for multiple beneficiaries. It argues that PFP can provide a market for local and smallholder farmers, promote the conservation and sustainable use of agrobiodiversity, and improve the nutrition and health of children and communities. Volume 2 of this publication, available at https://doi.org/10.4060/cb7969en, presents further analysis of the instruments, enablers and barriers for PFP implementation. It also provides case studies with local, regional and national experiences from Africa, Asia, Europe and North and South America.

This book was released on 1994 with total page 728 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Biometric analyses of well-localized specimens of the trilobite Dikelocephalus from the St. Lawrence Formation (Upper Cambrian), northern Mississippi Valley, suggest that all specimens belong to a single, highly variable morphospecies, D. minnesotensis. A complex pattern of ontogenetically-related and ontogeny-independent variation produced a mosaic of morphotypes, which show greater diversity than previously recorded within trilobite species. There is considerable variation within collections made from single beds. Variations of characters among collections are mosaic, and are clinal in some cases. Patterns of variation within Dikelocephalus cannot be related to lithofacies occurrence. There are no obvious temporal variations in D. minnesotensis within the St. Lawrence Formation, but some Dikelocephalus from the underlying Tunnel City Group may belong to a different taxon. The validity of this early taxon is questionable due to a lack of available material. The mosaic pattern of variation in Dikelocephalus mimics that documented at higher taxonomic levels in primitive libristomate trilobites, and helps explain difficulties in providing a workable taxonomy of primitive trilobites. Results caution proposition of evolutionary scenarios that do not take account of intraspecific variation. The recovery of dorsal shields of Dikelocephalus permits the first detailed reconstruction of the entire exoskeleton. The systematics of the genus is revised and twenty-five species are suppressed as junior synonyms of D. minnesotensis.
