Book excerpt: The selective hydrogenation of multi-unsaturated hydrocarbons, especially in pyrolysis products, to corresponding mono-olefins is a widely exploited way for large-scale production of polymer-grade olefins and also upgrading of gasoline blending stocks. Thermodynamic and/or kinetic parameters could be responsible for directing the reaction network to a special product. This book deals with application of palladium-based catalysts in selective hydrogenation of alkynes and diens. It covers both fundamental and applied aspects of selective hydrogenation with special emphasis on the selectivity problem. The book is organized in rational way beginning with the electronic structure of palladium, followed by its catalytic properties, interaction with supports and transport limitations and commercial applications.

Book excerpt: Catalytic Hydrogenation over Platinum Metals focuses on catalytic hydrogenation as an effective process in attaining controlled transformations of organic compounds. Composed of contributions of various authors, the book first provides information on catalysts, equipment, and conditions. Catalyst stability and reuse; types of catalyst; platinum metals; and synergism are covered. The text proceeds with discussions on hydrogenation reactors. Topics include atmospheric pressure reactors; low pressure reactors; microreactors; and high pressure reactors. The book also covers hydrogenation of carbon-carbon unsaturation. Catalytic metal; modified catalyst systems; stereochemistry; diacetylenes; and hydrogenolysis are discussed. The text also looks at the hydrogenation of aromatics, nitrogen and carbonyl compounds, and hydrogenolysis. Numerical representations and analysis, diagrams, and reactions of compounds when exposed to different laboratory conditions are considered. The selection is a great source of data for readers interested in studying the process of catalytic hydrogenation.

Book excerpt: This thesis offers novel methods for catalyst and process design for the selective hydrogenation of acetylene and 1,3-butadiene. The author predicts the properties of supported Pd–Ni bimetallic catalysts using density functional theory (DFT) calculations and temperature-programmed desorption (TPD). The excellent correlation between model surfaces and supported catalysts demonstrates the feasibility of designing effective bimetallic catalysts for selective hydrogenation reactions. The author also proposes a method for designing non-precious metal catalysts to replace precious metals. She modifies the process of selective hydrogenation of acetylene by coupling the selective adsorption to the selective hydrogenation in the liquid phase, as a result of which the ethylene selectivity is greatly improved and heat transfer is greatly enhanced. Lastly, by analyzing the mechanism of liquid-phase hydrogenation, the author proposes a multi-stage slurry bed reactor for industrial applications.“/p>

This book was released on 2009 with total page 150 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A series of palladium catalysts with ca. 1 wt% palladium supported on mesoporous silica with different pore sizes (MCM-41, SBA-15, and MCF) were prepared by deposition of colloidal Pd nanoparticles (Pd/X_col) and Pd(II)acetate solution (Pd/X_imp). MCM-41 and SBA-15 showed the XRD characteristic peaks indicating highly ordered hexagonal pore structure while MCF consisted of spherical cell and frame structure with average pore size of 2.7, 3.9, and 7.8 nm, respectively. Sizes of the colloidal Pd nanoparticles were about 2.3 nm. The supports pore structure did not affect the Pd particle size of Pd/X_col catalysts. For the Pd/X_imp, the Pd particle size was increased with increasing pore diameter of the supports. However, the largest Pd particle size was obtained on Pd/SBA-15_imp since the Pd particles were formed in a long cylindrical shape similar to SBA-15. The Pd/SBA-15_col exhibited the best catalyst performance in the liquid-phase selective hydrogenation of phenylacetylene under mild conditions (40 degress celsius, H2 pressure = 1-5 bar, 30 min). The appropriated pore structure and pore size of SBA-15 could provide a better encapsulation of Pd particles so that high styrene selectivity was attained at complete conversion of phenylacetylene. All the Pd/X_col catalysts exhibited no change in the catalyst activities/selectivity during the recyclability test for four cycles while the Pd/X_imp showed an increase of catalyst activity and lower styrene selectivity in some cases.

Book excerpt: In this study, the effects of alumina grinding and mixed oxides (ZnO-Al2O3 and NiO-Al2O3) grinding with various Zn/Al and Ni/Al molar ratios (0.1 and 0.5) prepared by an attrition ball mill on catalytic performance of alumina supported Pd catalysts for selective hydrogenation of acetylene were investigated. It was found that catalytic performances of the Pd catalyst supported on Al2O3 milled for 12 h were superior compared to those of Pd-supported on the unmilled Al2O3. However, all the catalysts prepared from milled mixed oxides presented lower acetylene conversion and ethylene selectivity than that of the catalyst prepared from alumina milled for 12 h. From X-ray diffraction, it was suggested that varying milling time directly affected the crystallite size, surface area and acidity of alumina supports. As revealed by CO chemisorption, milling of Al2O3 supports could increase metal active sites of Pd/Al2O3 catalysts without change in the interaction between Pd and the alumina support so that the catalysts exhibited higher acetylene activity and ethylene selectivity. Moreover, increasing of acidity affected coke formation on the catalysts.

Book excerpt: The performance of supported palladium catalysts that had been modified with triphenyl phosphine, diphenyl sulfide and triphenyl amine was compared to unmodified Pd/TiO2 catalysts. It was found that the selectivity was superior to the unmodified catalysts with or without the use of carbon monoxide as a modifier. Ethylene selectivities in excess of 70 % at conversion levels greater than 80% were observed on the modified catalysts under conditions of excess hydrogen which compares extremely well with other catalysts found in the literature. The modifier was found to significantly reduce the number of high energy sites on the surface on the palladium, thereby significantly hindering ethylene hydrogenation but not affecting acetylene hydrogenation. The simple preparation of these catalysts together with the simplicity added by not having to use carbon monoxide or limited hydrogen promises a viable alternative strategy for commercial catalysis.

Book excerpt: Abstract: The reactions of palladium are invaluable to modern academic and industrial research, and nanotechnology is the foundation on which the next generation of materials is built upon. Unsupported thiolate-capped palladium nanoparticles were found to be highly substrate selective for alkene hydrogenation and isomerization. A modified Brust-Schiffrin reaction enabled the facile and convenient synthesis of a diverse set of ultra-small thiolate-capped nanoparticles. The physical properties of these nanoparticles were highly tunable due to the widespread availability of ligand precursors. Mechanistic evidence and insights reveal that steric and electronic effects from the ligand environment on the nanoparticle surface controlled reactivity by influencing alkene adsorption via [pi] bond coordination or di-[sigma] bond formation. Only alkenes close enough to the metal surface of the nanoparticles underwent reaction. Dienes with good overlapping p orbitals could overcome these steric effects on the deactivated palladium nanoparticle surfaces. A mechanistic model was built from these completed studies, and this model can be used to predict the selectivity of hydrogenation or isomerization in multiple classes of alkenes with varied substitution patterns. These palladium nanoparticles were also found to be capable of chemoselective alkene hydrogenation in the presence of functional groups that are known to be labile towards reduction by palladium.
