Book excerpt: Though the characteristics of stateless diasporas are not widely studied, they c ould facilitate greater understanding of diasporic studies in general. As one of the largest stateless diasporas in the world today, Palestinian diaspora member s are scattered throughout the globe. Even though diasporic experiences differ f rom case to case, especially according to location, Palestinian diaspora discour se centers on the political plight of the Palestinians and their aspiration towa rds statehood. This study focuses specifically on Palestinians in Massachusetts (MA). By interviewing twenty-six Palestinians residing in MA (both foreign-born and A merican-born), this study has detected the processes deployed for maintaining th e original culture while at the same time fusing host land elements to create a hybrid identity. Such a hybrid identity could be useful in promoting mutual unde rstanding between the host land and the homeland. Essential research questions w ere evolved around the following: Is there a strong link between Palestinian's i n diaspora and the homeland? Are members of the diaspora united through a single organized community? Do members of the diaspora reveal hybridity through intert wining both homeland and host land cultural practices? Are members politically a ware of developments in both the host land and the homeland? And do they elect o fficials according to their stances on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict? The findings for this study highlight how the maintenance of a Palestinian cultu re and the political identities of the respondents combine. Furthermore, politic al role was explored as Palestinian-Americans in MA reside in a highly intellect ual hub, and thus, attempt to influence the policies of their host land governme nt (the US) in order to better the conditions of their brethren in the homeland (Palestine).

It provided a synopsis of the political and cultural meanings behind concepts such as home, identity, diaspora, hybridity, culture and visions of return. The dissertation yielded the way in discovering the meaning of place/homeland in relation to Palestinian diasporic identity in the city of Chicago, U.S.A. Further, the study examined the relationship between diaspora and identity construction among Palestinians living in Chicago and how the concept of identity is seen as multilayered. This study also looked at differences in relation to identity construction and maintenance across generational lines. To achieve the primary purpose of this study, I utilized a multi-method qualitative research approach to data collection. The qualitative data includes findings from thirty personal in-depth interviews and five focus group interviews. I interviewed members of the Palestinian community in Chicago who belong to the same culture I belong to. Being Palestinian myself granted me a privileged positioning as an insider within this particular community. The data collected from these interviews included personal reflections, narratives and historical memories. After listening to the narratives of the participants and after a careful translation and transcription of the data, several themes emerged. These themes are: The role of collective memory, the role of culture and communication, family and kinship diaspora and identity construction, meaning of homeland, transient lives and hybrid identities, notions of assimilation/integration, language, religion, notions of home and return, globalization and diaspora, and local and global media. Overall, the data revealed that there are differences between Palestinian communities in Chicago with regard to their identity construction/maintenance in terms of gender, age, their first home of refuge, and their educational and cultural background. The data also showed that the younger generation in diaspora are living in two worlds, two cultural systems and two identities: Palestinian and U.S. American. Data also revealed that the identity of the younger generation in diaspora is never purely Palestinian nor is it a hundred percent U.S. American.

Specifically, it studies the factors contributing to the fostering of such a sense of affiliation among Palestinian diasporic communities despite the absence of a Palestinian political entity that could undertake such a process. This dissertation proposes that the Palestinian master-narrative plays a significant role in maintaining and enhancing the attachment and affiliation of Palestinian diasporic communities with their original homeland. The Palestinian master-narrative, it is contended, is one of the main vehicles through which Palestinian national identity is built within and beyond the geographical realm of historic Palestine. This research claims that Palestinian diasporic writing (including Palestinian-American writing) has been circulating the Palestinian national narrative, which plays a significant role in enhancing the connection between Palestinian diasporic communities and their original homeland and helping them build a national identity. In addition, the circulation of these national narratives establishes the Nakba as a traumatic event in the collective imagination of post-Nakba Palestinian generations, making them equally traumatized as those Palestinians who experienced these events firsthand.Specifically, this dissertation focuses on representations of two main Palestinian national narratives in Palestinian-American writing and their role in building Palestinian national identity. The first narrative is that of the right of return and it is traced in Susan Abulhawa's Mornings in Jenin (2006). The second one is the narrative of sumud and it is examined in Randa Jarrar's A Map of Home (2008). In addition, the relationship between memory and Palestinian identity-building via national narrative is explored in Shaw Dallal's Scattered Like Seeds (1998).

Book excerpt: I found that while many people meet the theoretical criteria that exist in the literature on diaspora they do not necessarily identify with the concept, and the concept itself turned out to be much more complex and nuanced. Those who do identify with the concept stretch it so as to include immigrants and citizens in its purview. My study also makes visible the ways in which the identities of second, third, and fourth generation Arab-Americans have been affected by assimilation such that they now are busy reclaiming multiple forms of Arab identity: speaking Arabic, making indigenous food, music, dance, and political advocacy. Among all the Arab-Americans I studied, however, dance emerged as a crucially important practice for performing and affirming a group ethnic identity. Finally, while the members of this community certainly negotiate identities that are fluid, syncretic, and mediated through the vicissitudes of culture, power, and history, it also became clear that there are historically contingent forces that encourage their speaking as if in one voice.
