Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Milk is considered as a complete diet for an infant and contains essential nutrients for the development of young mammals. The substances in milk provide energy and antibodies that help protect against infection. Most farmers are paid for the quality and composition of their milk. Whole milk, once approved for use, is pumped into storage silos where it undergoes pasteurization, homogenization, separation, and further processing. Milk is a highly perishable commodity because it is an excellent medium for the growth of microorganisms - particularly bacterial pathogens - that can cause spoilage as well as diseases in consumers. Milk processing allows the preservation of milk for days, weeks, or months and helps to reduce food-borne illness.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Pakistan is considered among the leading raw milk producing countries. Unlike the production systems in the developed countries, milk production systems in Pakistan represent smallholding with subsistence- or market-oriented-level farming followed by peri-urban or commercial-level farming. Historically, dairy sector has been owned and managed by the private sector. During the past two decades, new initiatives have been taken because of the active involvement of corporate private sector. These efforts have resulted in improvements like enlargement of herds and import of high-quality milk germ plasm, the productivity per animal, milk collection, processing and marketing, the supply of dairy inputs (machinery, equipment, feeds, semen, and elite dairy animals), and farmers knowledge, and skills on modern management practices. Conclusively, the dairy sector is performing at some sustainable level to meet the food requirements of the growing population and helping save a handful of foreign exchange. Yet, challenges like local replacements of high genetic potential dairy animals, health hazards of β-casein proteins, antibiotics and aflatoxins, and uneconomical operational costs facing the dairy industry in the near future need to be addressed. The main objective of this chapter is to identify the current trends in dairy industry of Pakistan and describe those factors, which can influence the sustainability and profitability of dairying in the near future.

Book excerpt: There is a white revolution taking place in Pakistan, led by the private sector. It is transforming the practices of the country's dairy farmers and tying them in to the increasing demand for milk of its growing middle class. For the most part, the government and its functionaries are absent from this structural transformation in the country's rural economy Such absence is a first in the country's modern history. Stretching back to the colonial era under the Raj in India, when the building of irrigation canals starting in the 19th century transformed the landscape and tied rural populations to global commodity markets, the government always had a robust presence in the operations and changes of the rural economy. This time around, it is large multinationals led by Nestle and large Pakistani industrial food giants led by Engro Foods that are taking the lead in reshaping the rural economy, this time in the dairy sector. To tie farmers to their supply chains, these and other companies guarantee that they will be the sole purchaser for the farmer's entire dairy production. They then work with farmers to change on-farm dairy management practices to ensure consistent yields and quality of milk production. For farmers, having a guaranteed buyer for their enhanced milk production gives them an incentive to make the production and practice changes that the companies demand of them. Also, shorter payment cycles in the form of weekly payments to farmers means that their cost recovery time is significantly improved from traditional agricultural production of crops and commodities that are largely restricted to the country's two planting cycles. This financial transformation of the rural economy with its greater infusion of cash to farmers is also changing their ability to afford greater schooling access for their children with a broadly expressed desire that their children will not follow them into dairy farming.

This expansion is marked by increased milk production, an improvement in herd breed structure, enhanced extension services, and the expansion of milk collection channels. In comparison to the early 1980s when selling milk was a social taboo, more than 12 billion liters of milk are now marketed through different channels. This has led the dairy sector from subsistence farm-ing to a commercialised activity. The contribution of the dairy sector to Pakistan's economy is enormous in terms of share in national ...

Book excerpt: While policy makers, media, and the international community focus their attention on Pakistan’s ongoing security challenges, the potential of the rural economy, and particularly the agricultural sector, to improve Pakistanis’ well-being is being neglected. Agriculture is crucial to Pakistan’s economy. Almost half of the country’s labor force works in the agricultural sector, which produces food and inputs for industry (such as cotton for textiles) and accounts for over a third of Pakistan’s total export earnings. Equally important are nonfarm economic activities in rural areas, such as retail sales in small village shops, transportation services, and education and health services in local schools and clinics. Rural nonfarm activities account for between 40 and 57 percent of total rural household income. Their large share of income means that the agricultural sector and the rural nonfarm economy have vital roles to play in promoting growth and reducing poverty in Pakistan.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Agriculture plays a pivotal role in the economy and development of Pakistan providing food to consumers, raw materials to industries, and a market for industrial goods. Unfortunately, agricultural production is stagnant due to several barriers including a fixed cropping pattern, reliance on a few major crops, a narrow genetic pool, poor seed quality, and a changing climate. In addition, the high cost of production, weak phytosanitary compliance mechanisms, and a lack of cold chain facilities makes Pakistan agriculturally uncompetitive in export markets. Despite all these issues, agriculture is the primary industry in Pakistan and small farmers continue to dominate the business. Small farmers grow crops for subsistence under a fixed cropping pattern and a holistic approach is required to develop agriculture to improve the livelihoods of the rural populace. This book presents an exhaustive look at agriculture in Pakistan. Chapters provide critical analyses of present trends, inadequacies in agriculture, strategic planning, improvement programs and policies while keeping in view the natural resources, plant- and animal-related agricultural production technologies, input supplies, population planning, migration and poverty, and balanced policies on finance, credit, marketing, and trade.

Book excerpt: "Australia has worked with Pakistan to complete Phase I of the the Agricultural Sector Linkages Program (ASLP) dairy project (LPS/2005/132, Improving dairy production in Pakistan through improved extension services). The project demonstrated the potential to improve the profitability of smallholder dairy farmers through piloting of new extension approaches and materials. Of the 250 pilot farmers, more than 30% made relatively simple improvements to their management practices, such as providing free access to water for their animals throughout the day (this practice alone leads to increases in milk production of approximately 1.5 l/day, reductions in health-related issues and significant reductions in labour inputs). Based on the effective linkages and good prospects for further technical progress resulting from ASLP, and the opportunity for further strengthening benefit flows to the rural poor, Australia and Pakistan agreed to undertake a second phase of ASLP, which started at the end of 2010 and lasted 5 years. It took place within value-chain frameworks and gave special attention to benefits for the poor and marginalised."--Website.
