Book excerpt: Choked Pipes is the first consolidated review of Pakistan's health system, which analyzes impediments and offers a phased implementation roadmap for reform. It outlines the existing configuration of the country's health system, presents a brief overview of the factors responsible for poorhealth status, and outlines weaknesses of 'reform' approaches adopted in the past. By describing the Mixed Health Systems Syndrome, the book has drawn attention to the systemic challenges in an environment where publicly-funded government health delivery coexists with privately-financed marketdelivery. The direction of reform proposed in the book draws attention to a number of structural factors, both within and outside of the healthcare system and lay emphasis on reform of governance and social welfare as an important adjunct to reform within the healthcare system. The reform roadmapis relevant to current efforts aimed at achieving development goals in today's macro-economically constrained environment and meeting broader development objectives in the context of Pakistan's prevailing geo-strategic challenges. The reform agenda proposed herein comes at a critical time in theevolution of interest in global health from 'diseases' to 'systems' and therefore has a bearing on health systems in other developing countries, most of which have mixed health systems. As such, the normative framework is envisaged to be a useful contribution in the space of global health.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is aimed to emphasize the rationale and importance of prevention and management of viral hepatitis in children, providing cutting edge knowledge. Viral hepatitis is a major health problem in the world. Although most complications of viral hepatitis are observed in adults, primary infection with hepatitis viruses often occurs during infancy or childhood. To better control viral hepatitis, prevention and therapy if possible should be started in childhood. This book offers updated and unique information about viral hepatitis in children, which has vitally important impact on global disease outcome and control, yet not discussed as frequently as viral hepatitis in adults in previous medical literature. Better prevention and management strategies are covered, starting from infancy and childhood, and even earlier during fetal life. It will be very helpful for better control of viral hepatitis both for daily practice and for developing future strategies and directions. If we can successfully control viral hepatitis in children, there will be very little remaining chronic hepatitis and related complications such as liver cirrhosis or hepatoma in adults. We hope readers, including medical students, researchers, pediatricians, family medicine physicians, infectious disease personnel, public health workers, gastroenterologists, hepatologists and parents of children with chronic hepatitis, will be benefited by reading this book.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Contextuality of Healthcare Choices in Pakistan analyzes the contextual factors shaping healthcare decision-making in Pakistan. Divided into three thematic areas—contextuality of healthcare choices, power dynamics and the health of the marginalized, and emerging challenges and healthcare response—the book explores the complex interplay of social, cultural, and institutional influences on health-seeking behaviors. The book examines the nuanced fabric of healthcare decision-making in Pakistan through a series of nine meticulously crafted chapters. From the influence of geography and social context on health-related choices to the power dynamics inherent in patient-doctor interactions, each chapter offers valuable insights into the myriad factors shaping individuals' healthcare decisions. Moreover, the book sheds light on overlooked aspects of healthcare decision-making, including the experiences of marginalized communities such as the transgender population and individuals seeking mental healthcare. Drawing on diverse theoretical perspectives and empirical evidence, this book challenges simplistic notions of healthcare decision-making as solely individual and rational. Instead, it argues for a comprehensive understanding of how communal, social, and institutional factors intersect to shape health-seeking behaviors. By illuminating the contextual complexities inherent in healthcare decision-making, this book offers invaluable insights for researchers, policymakers, healthcare professionals, and the wider public interested in understanding and improving healthcare outcomes in Pakistan.

Book excerpt: This book focuses on the social and societal context of women's mental health. Drawing from multidisciplinary perspectives and scholarship, it pays particular attention to how women's mental health is experienced at the personal level, yet it is influenced by their relationships and interacts with the larger societal context (such as prevailing gender equality policies, income distribution, role burden, peace and security). Specific attention is given to the positive aspects of women's mental health (such as agency, resilience) and how women’s personal relations across diverse domains (such as family, work, neighbourhoods) are constructed and influenced by, and in turn influence, broader societal structures/ policies/ opportunities. A unique feature of this book is that, at the end of each chapter, there is a Response section written by a non-academic such as a community member, practitioner or policy maker in which the invited authors respond to the chapter texts in the form of narrative, poetry, and/or prose, according to their various backgrounds, interests, and experiences.
