Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Pairwise Independence and Derandomization gives several applications of the following paradigm, which has proven extremely powerful in algorithm design and computational complexity. First, design a probabilistic algorithm for a given problem. Then, show that the correctness analysis of the algorithm remains valid even when the random strings used by the algorithm do not come from the uniform distribution, but rather from a small sample space, appropriately chosen. In some cases this can be proven directly (giving "unconditional derandomization"), and in others it uses computational assumptions, like the existence of 1-way functions (giving "conditional derandomization"). Pairwise Independence and Derandomization is self contained, and is a prime manifestation of the "derandomization" paradigm. It is intended for scholars and graduate students in the field of theoretical computer science interested in randomness, derandomization and their interplay with computational complexity.

Book excerpt: Abstract: "We prove that the minimum cut problem can be solved in NC on arbitrarily weighted undirected graphs. We do so by giving three separate and independently interesting results. The first is a relatively straightforward NC (2 + [epsilon])-approximation algorithm for the minimum cut. It uses O(m2/n) processors. The second result is a randomized reduction of the minimum cut problem to the minimum cut approximation problem. The third is a derandomization of this reduction. Performing the derandomization requires a novel combination of two previously known derandomization techniques: pairwise independence and random walks on expanders."

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This beginning graduate textbook describes both recent achievements and classical results of computational complexity theory. Requiring essentially no background apart from mathematical maturity, the book can be used as a reference for self-study for anyone interested in complexity, including physicists, mathematicians, and other scientists, as well as a textbook for a variety of courses and seminars. More than 300 exercises are included with a selected hint set. The book starts with a broad introduction to the field and progresses to advanced results. Contents include: definition of Turing machines and basic time and space complexity classes, probabilistic algorithms, interactive proofs, cryptography, quantum computation, lower bounds for concrete computational models (decision trees, communication complexity, constant depth, algebraic and monotone circuits, proof complexity), average-case complexity and hardness amplification, derandomization and pseudorandom constructions, and the PCP theorem.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Randomization and probabilistic techniques play an important role in modern computer science, with applications ranging from combinatorial optimization and machine learning to communication networks and secure protocols. This 2005 textbook is designed to accompany a one- or two-semester course for advanced undergraduates or beginning graduate students in computer science and applied mathematics. It gives an excellent introduction to the probabilistic techniques and paradigms used in the development of probabilistic algorithms and analyses. It assumes only an elementary background in discrete mathematics and gives a rigorous yet accessible treatment of the material, with numerous examples and applications. The first half of the book covers core material, including random sampling, expectations, Markov's inequality, Chevyshev's inequality, Chernoff bounds, the probabilistic method and Markov chains. The second half covers more advanced topics such as continuous probability, applications of limited independence, entropy, Markov chain Monte Carlo methods and balanced allocations. With its comprehensive selection of topics, along with many examples and exercises, this book is an indispensable teaching tool.
