Book Synopsis Polymer Dispersions and Their Industrial Applications by : Dieter Urban
Download or read book Polymer Dispersions and Their Industrial Applications written by Dieter Urban and published by Wiley-VCH. This book was released on 2002 with total page 436 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Aqueous polymer dispersions are environmentally friendly and therefore they have replaced in many applications polymers dissolved in organic solvents. This substitution process is still ongoing. This book discusses the world of aqueous polymer dispersions from the viewpoint of how they are applied. For a better understanding it starts with a general description of the synthesis of polymer dispersions and their characterization. The following chapters are dedicated to a wide variety of applications, including history, modern processes, and typical formulations and performance. The selection and the usage of a polymer dispersion are not uniform around the world because of historical and regional differences of the technical developments and marketing demands. Leading scientists from industry contributed to this book ensuring that practical issues are emphasized.

Download or read book Active Protective Coatings written by Anthony E. Hughes and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-03-01 with total page 428 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book covers a broad range of materials science that has been brought to bear on providing solutions to the challenges of developing self-healing and protective coatings for a range of metals. The book has a strong emphasis on characterisation techniques, particularly new techniques that are beginning to be used in the coatings area. It features many contributions written by experts from various industrial sectors which examine the needs of the sectors and the state of the art. The development of self-healing and protective coatings has been an expanding field in recent years and applies a lot of new knowledge gained from other fields as well as other areas of materials science to the development of coatings. It has borrowed from fields such as the food and pharmaceutical industries who have used, polymer techniques, sol-gel science and colloidosome technology for a range encapsulation techniques. It has also borrowed from fields like hydrogen storage such as from the development of hierarchical and other materials based on organic templating as “nanocontainers” for the delivery of inhibitors. In materials science, recent developments in high throughput and other characterisation techniques, such as those available from synchrotrons, are being increasing used for novel characterisation – one only needs to look at the application of these techniques in self healing polymers to gauge wealth of new information that has been gained from these techniques. This work is largely driven by the need to replace environmental pollutants and hazardous chemicals that represent risk to humans such as chromate inhibitors which are still used in some applications.

This important book reviews the range of organic paint coatings and how their performance can be enhanced to provide effective and lasting protection. The book begins by reviewing key factors affecting the success of a coating, including surface preparation, methods of application, selecting an appropriate paint and testing its effectiveness. It also discusses why coatings fail, including how they degrade, and what can be done to prevent these problems. Part two describes the main types of coating and how their performance can be enhanced, including epoxies, polyester, glass flake, fluoropolymer, polysiloxane and waterborne coatings. The final part of the book looks at applications of high-performance organic coatings in such areas as reinforced concrete, pipelines, marine and automotive engineering. With its distinguished editor and international team of contributors, High-performance organic coatings is a valuable reference for all those concerned with preventing corrosion in steel and other metal structures. Reviews the factors affecting the success of a coating Describes the main types of coating and how their performance can be enhanced, including epoxies, polyester and waterborne coatings Examines applications in such areas as reinforced concrete pipelines and marine engineering
