Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This work is a collection of painting produced for two exhibitions of Loeb's paintings produced in 2004. That year was a break out time for the author and a time of great productivity. The poems and writings of that time were the result of personnal upheaval introspection and a lot of drinking. Relationships and feelings about padding around in America at that time are pretty well documented in the poetry and in the subject matter of the paintings. The author published poerty at a young age and has painted seriously since high school. Wounded in life by self infliction, it was natural the author would choose creativity as his balm.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Poetry of Pathos Delight: From the Works of Coventry Patmore This book does not Offer a selection in the usual sense. The poetry of a master is selected before it is written, and before it is conceived; and the mind that conceives it is selected. Mr. Coventry Patmore's art and labour do but second that original distinction. Therefore it is hardly neces sary to say that my intention has not been to make a collection of best passages. What has been intended is to collect passages in. Which the poet has dealt with two things - delight and sorrow, those human and intelligible passions to which all real poetry has access, but which this poetry touches so close as to be mingled with them and changed into them. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Victory Verses and Poems of Pathos There's a little blue star in my window, That means all the world to me, For it speaks in a voice sweet and tender Of a loved one far over the sea. It comforts me when I am lonely, It brightens the gloom of my night, For I know its pure love is mine only, 'as it fills all my soul with its light. That little blue star stands for duty, For a purpose both noble and high, For a soul filled with honor and beauty, For a love that is willing to die. One night when the shadows were falling And my heart felt a yearning untold, An angel of light, In his heavenly ight, Turned that little blue star to gold. Tho he sleeps where the poppies are waving, In a foreign land over the sea, Yet the solace my spirit is craving, That little gold star brings to me; It will lead me to holier duty, In a cause which he died to atone, Till the Prince of Peace comes in His beauty, 'and we meet around heaven's white throne. Book excerpt: The poems and paintings presented by Dean Glorso in "In Search of the Laughing Place" arise from yearnings and recollections, some nostalgic and harking back to childhood, others connecting to history and the circumstances of a veteran's homecoming. Together the poems and iconic paintings are often complementary; and offer us admission and transit through the author's lifetime journey in the form of lyric narrative poems supported by original art, a work that blends empathy, irony and pathos. The reoccuring themes for resolution in this fine, engaging book brings light upon the past, including stories of family and those lost in conflict. The central theme of longing and homecoming is best exemplified when the author returns to a place frequented by him and his friends while growing up in Keenyville, Illinois. However, the "Laughing Place " of the title is more than a search for a physical environment. Both the poems and evocative paintings become our compass pointing the way to an ideal; perhaps now lost as it once was, but one that is still very real in our memory, and held permanent in our hearts and minds. To Dean Glorso, laughter is as important to the mind of mankind as nourishment from food is to the human body. "In Search of the Laughing Place" takes us on a verbal and visual journey to a place of the heart. Sometimes the journey to laughter is not direct, but through our experiences in life we must draw ourselves to the "Laughing Place" we crave. Dean Glorso's book of poems and paintings unleashes thoughts and emotions needed to remind us that laughter is good for the soul.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Late in his life Titian created a series of paintings--the "Four Sinners,” the "poesie” for his patron Philip II of Spain, and the "Final Tragedies”--that were dark in tone and content, full of pathos and physical suffering. In this major reinterpretation of Titian’s art, Thomas Puttfarken shows that the often dramatic and violent subject matter of these works was not, as is often argued, the consequence of the artist’s increasing age and sense of isolation and tragedy. Rather, these paintings were influenced by discussions of Aristotle’s Poetics that permeated learned discourse in Italy in the mid-sixteenth century. The Poetics led directly to a rich theory of the visual arts, and painting in particular, that enabled artists like Titian to consider themselves on equal footing with poets. Puttfarken investigates Titian’s late works in this context and analyzes his relations with his patrons, his intellectual and humanistic contacts, and his choices of subject matter, style, and technique.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Jean-Baptiste Du Bos’ Critical Reflections on Poetry and Painting, first published in French in 1719, is one of the seminal works of modern aesthetics. Du Bos rejected the seventeenth-century view that works of art are assessed by reason. Instead, he believed, audience members have sentiments in response to artworks. Their sentiments are fainter versions of those they would feel in response to actually seeing what the work of art imitates. Du Bos was influenced by John Locke’s empiricism and, in turn, had a major impact on virtually every major eighteenth-century contributor to philosophy of art, including Voltaire, Montesquieu, Diderot, Rousseau, Herder, Lessing, Mendelssohn, Kames, Gerard, and Hume. This is the first modern, annotated and scholarly edition of the Critical Reflections in any language.
