Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Accompanying a major retrospective, this long-overdue survey establishes Mark Tobey as a pioneering champion of abstraction in America. The first comprehensive English-language monograph on Mark Tobey in forty years, this book traces the evolution of this artist’s groundbreaking style and his significant yet under-recognized contributions to abstraction and midcentury American modernism. One of the foremost American artists to emerge from the 1940s, a decade that saw the rise of Abstract Expressionism, Tobey (1890–1976) is now recognized as a vanguard figure whose work anticipated the formal innovations of New York School artists such as Jackson Pollock. Tobey’s small tempera paintings composed of intricate, pale webs of delicate lines generated much interest for their daring “all-over” compositions. Tobey’s unique form of abstraction was the synthesis of his living both in Seattle and New York, his extensive trips to Hong Kong, Shanghai, Kyoto, and Europe, and his conversion to the Baha’i faith. His subtle calligraphic renderings are composed of a lyrical integration of both Eastern and Western visual histories and philosophies and pan-cultural references to abstract traditions that range from Chinese scroll painting to European Cubism. Surveying the artist’s career with works ranging from the 1920s to 1970, this fully illustrated volume reveals the extraordinarily nuanced yet radical beauty of Tobey’s painting, affirming his significant role in the development of abstraction.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: William Cumming began as a self-taught artist who grew up in Tukwila, a small town outside Seattle. In 1937, at the age of twenty, he met Morris Graves, who was at that time working in Seattle for the Federal Art project of the Works Progress Administration. Through Graves he soon became part of the circle of friends who came to be known as the Northwest School of artists: Mark Tobey, then nearing fifty, the patriarchal leader of the group; Kenneth Callahan and his wife Margaret, a writer and critic who became Cumming's particular mentor; Guy Anderson, Lubin Petric, and others. He has taught for many years at the Art Institute of Seattle and Cornish College of the Arts. "Bill Cumming is at once an exceptional and successful regional artist and one of the most erudite, perceptive, and entertainingly cantankerous characters in this part of the world. [He] tells what it was like to be an artist in the Great Depression, tells tales out of school about such international luminaries as Mark Tobey and Morris Graves, tells how the Northwest School (of which he was the youngest member) developed, tells about the early success -- and ultimate failure -- of the Communist movement in the Far West, and shows how the political, economic, and cultural events of a half-century affected the life of a region and of its creative minority. Cumming is a natural raconteur, equipped with more literary wit and charm than most professional writers." -- Tom Robbins "Besides being one of the Northwest's best painters, Bill Cumming has certainly had a knack for being, historically speaking, in the right place at the right time. Beyond being good local history, hisSketchbookis a moving, sometimes chillingly perceptive, and certainly fascinating glimpse into the nature of artists themselves." -- Wesley Wehr

Book excerpt: "In Iridescent Light, the distinguished art critic Deloris Tarzan Ament profiles twenty-one of these artists who lived and worked in Washington State during formative periods in their careers. The author blends discussion of their work with commentary on the obstacles they faced and the influences they brought to bear on one another, showing not only how artistic visions were shaped but also how encouragement from a few farseeing patrons enabled the very survival of these artists. Essays are illustrated by Mary Randlett's photographs, taken over half a century."--BOOK JACKET.

Book excerpt: "The surrealism of those shows percolated into Martin's psyche, and his paintings - once he started to trust his own view of things - began to sprout the ambiguities of burlesque and the black humor of slapstick. Now when Martin paints a Northwest scene, it's likely to be peopled with freaks and floozies. He stays up nights listening to the radical opinions on Art Bell's radio talk show, and he considers the Jerry Springer show a new form of vaudeville. Martin transforms the daily input of the media into the wild stream-of-consciousness of his paintings - for him both a compulsive kind of storytelling and a way of escape."--BOOK JACKET.

Book excerpt: While a contemporary of the Abstract Expressionists, Tobey developed a unique and often calligraphic style, grounded in a place of mindfulness rather than the physical action of his contemporaries. A spiritual and artistic turning point for Tobey occurred in 1918 when he was introduced to the ecumenical Baha?i Faith, which promotes universal consciousness. Working largely in water-based media, such as tempera and gouache, on modestly-scaled canvases and paper, Tobey began a painting by emptying his mind of extraneous thoughts in order to focus exclusively on the meticulous placement of abstract gestures and shapes. Within his tablet-size paintings, suffused with masses of lines and overlaid with fragmentary forms, Tobey captured universes of possibilities and energy. In discussing his practice, Tobey said: ?I believe that painting should come through the avenues of meditation rather than the canals of action. Only then can one have a conversation with a painting. If I find no content, there?s no communication."00Exhibition: Pace Gallery, New York, USA (25.10.2018-12.01.2019).
