Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fashioned Texts and Painted Books examines the folding fan's multiple roles in fin-de-siecle and early twentieth-century French literature. Focusing on the fan's identity as a symbol of feminine sexuality, as a collectible art object, and, especially, as an alternative book form well suited to the reception of poetic texts, the study highlights the fan's suitability as a substrate for verse, deriving from its myriad associations with coquetry and sex, flight, air, and breath. Close readings of Stephane Mallarme's eventails of the 1880s and 1890s and Paul Claudel's Cent phrases pour eventails (1927) consider both text and paratext as they underscore the significant visual interest of this poetry. Works in prose and in verse by Octave Uzanne, Guy de Maupassant, and Marcel Proust, along with fan leaves by Edgar Degas, Edouard Manet, Berthe Morisot, and Paul Gauguin, serve as points of comparison that deepen our understanding of the complex interplay of text and image that characterizes this occasional subgenre. Through its interrogation of the correspondences between form and content in fan poetry, this study demonstrates that the fan was, in addition to being a ubiquitous fashion accessory, a significant literary and art historical object straddling the boundary between East and West, past and present, and high and low art.

Book excerpt: "Cezanne once said, 'Painting from nature is not copying the object, but realizing one's sensations.' When I paint the landscape, I feel like singing." Mary Page Evans Wilmington-based painter Mary Page Evans works directly from nature, en plein air, seeking to capture a specific landscape, figure, tree, or sky. She is engaged by particularity, making an effort to establish the locale, the time of day, and the quality of light. Not surprisingly, her influences include the French impressionists and post-impressionists, as well as the abstract expressionist Joan Mitchell. Evans has worked at Claude Monet's garden in Giverny and names Cezanne as an inspiration. The painter Gene Davis described Evans's paintings as "hymns of unadulterated joy," and her accompanying exhibition, Painted Poetry: The Art of Mary Page Evans, promises to be a gorgeous celebration of nature and the human form, as well as a retrospective covering more than forty years of the painter's distinguished career. "Art history has always played an important role in my work," explains Evans. "Having absorbed the structural lessons of Cezanne and the 'push-pull' principle of Hans Hofmann, I try to loosen the form and let color determine the structure and create the space. I strive for a visual back-and-forth in the space resulting from forms and colors reacting to each other--like music." Evans is widely collected and has works in the Delaware Art Museum, Wilmington, DE; National Museum of Women in the Arts, Washington, DC; and the State Museum of Pennsylvania, Harrisburg, PA, among others. AUTHOR: Bill Scott is a Philadelphia-based painter and critic. 75 colour illustrations

Book excerpt: Painted Poetry is a collection of the art infused poems of Keila Womack. The Poet pours words of emotion in lines of poetry while bringing the essence of thoughts to life with a visual inspiration of her very own oil paintings. At the young age of 15, Keila found solace in releasing poetic thoughts as well as writing and singing her own lyrics. Writing, as well as painting has been a journey of healing, renewal and hope while walking round the unexpected corners of every day life. In her own words she expresses the need for art as the need for bread, "Being an artist may not pay the bills but it restores the heart, fills an absent mind and gives bread to a hungry soul." Collectively, her vision of art and the sensitivity of literature creates a distinctly unique relationship. "Poetry is in the heart of every human soul. Life breaks the man, his longing and release of words makes his being whole."

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Throughout the history of imperial China, the educated elite used various means to criticize government policies and actions. During the Song dynasty (960-1278), some members of this elite found an elegant and subtle means of dissent: landscape painting. By examining literary archetypes, the titles of paintings, contemporary inscriptions, and the historical context, Alfreda Murck shows that certain paintings expressed strong political opinions--some transparent, others deliberately concealed. She argues that the coding of messages in seemingly innocuous paintings was an important factor in the growing respect for painting among the educated elite and that the capacity of painting’s systems of reference to allow scholars to express dissent with impunity contributed to the art’s vitality and longevity.

Book excerpt: The Painted Bunting’s Last Molt explores fatherhood, parenting, and separation anxiety; and the ways in which time and memory are both a prison and a giver of joy. Fifteen years in the making, Virgil Suárez’s new collection uses his mother’s return to Cuba after 50 years of exile as a catalyst to muse on familial relationships, death, and the passing of time. Moon Decima If it were the Eucharist, it’d be hard to swallow, this moon of lost impressions, a boy in deep water, something tickling his skin. This memory of weight- lessness—a kite that somehow still manages to hover in the dog mouth blackness of sky. This is a cut out moon of lost children, or is it a savior’s moon? This boy will float on home, or be swallowed by the water. Above the pines and mangroves, this moon hangs unrelenting. Is it the one eye of an indifferent God that remains open just so?

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A new look at the art of one of the most charming and idiosyncratic personalities of early 20th-century New York Florine Stettheimer (1871-1944) was a New York original: a society lady who hosted an avant-garde salon in her Manhattan home, a bohemian and a flapper, a poet, a theater designer, and above all an influential painter with a sharp satirical wit. Stettheimer collaborated with Gertrude Stein and Virgil Thomson, befriended (and took French lessons from) Marcel Duchamp, and was a member of Alfred Stieglitz and Georgia O'Keeffe's artistic and intellectual circle. Beautifully illustrated with 150 color images, including the majority of the artist's extant paintings, as well as drawings, theater designs, and ephemera, this volume also highlights Stettheimer's poetry and gives her a long overdue critical reassessment. The essays published here--as well as a roundtable discussion by seven leading contemporary female artists--overturn the traditional perception of Stettheimer as an artist of mere novelties. Her work is linked not only to American modernism and the New York bohemian scene before World War II but also to a range of art practices active today. Flamboyant and epicurean, she was an astute documenter of New York and parodist of her social milieu; her highly decorative scenes borrowed from Surrealism and contributed to the beginnings of a feminist aesthetic.

Book excerpt: In these forty-two poems, Robin Robertson demonstrates an astonishing range of style and concerns, in a voice that is utterly original. Whether he is rendering a dramatic new version of Ovid ("The Flaying of Marsyas") or celebrating the ambiguous pleasures of food ("Artichoke"), Robertson's poetry is always lucid, sensuous, and compelling. These are poems that speak of the wounds of memory, the implacable coupling of desire and loss, the fugitive nature of things. Elegant and profound, A Painted Field has proved a stunning debut.

His book "The Painted Shadows" has been recognized by many as a work that is both refreshing and challenging at the same time. His poetry is familiar, yet the style is fully his own. The authors meditations on love & loss, life & death, religion & spirituality, his own personal identity, humanity, history & sexuality all form a compelling narrative for the reader as he pushes the absolute limits of his creativity. This poet delves deeply into his past and present taking us all on a very real and personal journey of the spirit as he seeks to articulate his visions with the rest of us. "The poetry of his writing embodies a range of feelings and images that are always unpredictable, yet beautiful and haunting at the same time...His words resonate with the reader and open doorways to the limitless possibilities [whether he] is proposing his own re-interpretation or vision to historical images and text. His words are painful to read at times, the images that come forth bleed from his heart echoing in the interior of his soul, screaming his pain... Still other passages are deeply erotic and mesmerizing, leaving the reader to wonder how much is from this poets own personal reality. He can look into the night and transcend meaning, his words leave an indelible impression, causing the reader to dive back in again and again looking for hidden meanings and gems among the passages...Elias truly gives space to poetic meaning and initiates further dialogue leaving the reader wanting more and more." KB The assembled guest poets that are in the back of this book of poetry both old and new form a wonderful compliment to this gifted writers verse. Familiar names from the indie writing community like Ethan Radcliff, Alan Walker & Alexandria Sure along with a slew of new and upcoming poets all form a wonderful framework and introduction to this writers poetic vision.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Even many Renaissance specialists believe that little secular painting survives before the late fifteenth century, and its appearance becomes a further argument for the secularizing of art. This book asks how history changes when a longer record of secular art is explored. It is the first study in any language of the decoration of Italian palaces and homes between 1300 and the mid-Quattrocento, and it argues that early secular painting was crucial to the development of modern ideas of art. Of the cycles discussed, some have been studied and published, but most are essentially unknown. A first aim is to enrich our understanding of the early Renaissance by introducing a whole corpus of secular painting that has been too long overlooked. Yet "Painted palaces" is not a study of iconography. In examining the prehistory of painted rooms like Mantegna's Camera Picta, the larger goal is to rethink the history of early Renaissance art.
