Book excerpt: An exploration of why people all over the world love to engage in pain on purpose--from dominatrices, religious ascetics, and ultramarathoners to ballerinas, icy ocean bathers, and sideshow performers Masochism is sexy, human, reviled, worshipped, and can be delightfully bizarre. Deliberate and consensual pain has been with us for millennia, encompassing everyone from Black Plague flagellants to ballerinas dancing on broken bones to competitive eaters choking down hot peppers while they cry. Masochism is a part of us. It lives inside workaholics, tattoo enthusiasts, and all manner of garden variety pain-seekers. At its core, masochism is about feeling bad, then better—a phenomenon that is long overdue for a heartfelt and hilarious investigation. And Leigh Cowart would know: they are not just a researcher and science writer—they’re an inveterate, high-sensation seeking masochist. And they have a few questions: Why do people engage in masochism? What are the benefits and the costs? And what does masochism have to say about the human experience? By participating in many of these activities themselves, and through conversations with psychologists, fellow scientists, and people who seek pain for pleasure, Cowart unveils how our minds and bodies find meaning and relief in pain—a quirk in our programming that drives discipline and innovation even as it threatens to swallow us whole.

Book excerpt: Learn How to Turn Tragedy and Pain into a Catalyst for Growth and Success! It's been said that pain is a fundamental part of life-a darkness that acts as a contrast to the light. Most, if not all of us experience pain at some point in our lives, particularly the emotional pain of loss. While it may be true that pain is unavoidable, it doesn't have to lead to meaningless suffering. Pain can serve a far greater purpose in your life than something to be feared. Jay Nixon, the bestselling author of The Overweight Mind: The Undeniable Truth Behind Why You're Not Losing Weight is back with a groundbreaking new book, The Purpose of Pain: How to Turn Tragedy into Triumph, Because Life's Not Supposed to Suck! The Purpose of Pain is a transformational guide that shows you how to turn pain into a catalyst for change-how you can turn your story of tragedy into a life of triumph. In the book, Nixon chronicles his personal struggle with the pain of losing his father at age five in a devastating head-on car crash - an event that cast a two decade-long shadow over his life. Using a combination of direct truths and a touch of humor, Nixon walks you step by step through the process he used to overcome the tragedy that had dominated his life, and turn it into a life of triumph and success. The result is a compassionate guide that anyone can use to conquer emotional pain in all of its many forms. In this book, you'll learn: How honoring your pain helps jumpstart the healing process Tools and tactics to avoid tragedy that dictate your future How to shift your mindset from victim to warrior How to use your pain for purpose instead of sadness Why rituals are powerful and how to use them to heal Permission to stop feeling guilty about claiming the happiness you deserve What the Personal Development Vortex is-and how to avoid it. ...and much more! Most of all, you'll pinpoint the habits and thinking patterns you've been unconsciously using to sabotage your own progress, so you can overcome your pain and turn it into a catalyst for progress. Jay Nixon is an internationally recognized transformation coach who has been profiled by ABS, CBS and FOX. He has also been featured in magazines such as Health and Triathlete. With his extensive coaching and speaking career and deep life experience, plus his witty but purposeful writing style, there's no one better qualified to explain the benefits (yes, benefits!) of suffering than Nixon.

Book excerpt: “The extreme greatness of Christianity lies in the fact that it does not seek a supernatural remedy for suffering, but a supernatural use for it.” –Simone Weil “Like most people I, too, have been blindsided by personal grief now and again over the years. And I have an increasingly keen sense that, wherever I am, someone nearby is suffering now. For that reason, I lately have settled in to mull the matter over, gathering my troubled wits to undertake a difficult essay, more like what we used to call an assay, really—an earnest inquiry. I am thinking of it just now as a study in suffering, by which I hope to find some sense in affliction, hoping—just as I have come to hope about experience in general—to make something of it.” –from the book Is there meaning in our afflictions? With the thoughtfulness of a pilgrim and the prose of a poet, Scott Cairns takes us on a soul-baring journey through “the puzzlement of our afflictions.” Probing ancient Christian wisdom for revelation in his own pain, Cairns challenges us toward a radical revision of the full meaning and breadth of human suffering. Clear-eyed and unsparingly honest, this new addition to the literature of suffering is reminiscent of The Year of Magical Thinking as well as the works of C. S. Lewis. Cairns points us toward hope in the seasons of our afflictions, because “in those trials in our lives that we do not choose but press through—a stillness, a calm, and a hope become available to us.”

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A novel theory of pain, according to which pains are imperatives—commands issued by the body, ordering you to protect the injured part. In What the Body Commands, Colin Klein proposes and defends a novel theory of pain. Klein argues that pains are imperative; they are sensations with a content, and that content is a command to protect the injured part of the body. He terms this view “imperativism about pain,” and argues that imperativism can account for two puzzling features of pain: its strong motivating power and its uninformative nature. Klein argues that the biological purpose of pain is homeostatic; like hunger and thirst, pain helps solve a challenge to bodily integrity. It does so by motivating you to act in ways that help the body recover. If you obey pain's command, you get better (in ordinary circumstances). He develops his account to handle a variety of pain phenomena and applies it to solve a number of historically puzzling cases. Klein's intent is to defend the imperativist view in a pure form—without requiring pain to represent facts about the world. Klein presents a model of imperative content showing that intrinsically motivating sensations are best understood as imperatives, and argues that pain belongs to this class. He considers the distinction between pain and suffering; explains how pain motivates; addresses variations among pains; and offers an imperativist account of maladaptive pains, pains that don't appear to hurt, masochism, and why pain feels bad.

To prevent losing another baby, she seeks refuge with her parents, but with Khalil hot on her trail, she is forced to move in with her sorority sister, Alanna Davis. Living under one roof gives the women an opportunity to reconcile past differences and together deal with love, pain, and life's transitions. Realizing that the search for his wife is in vain, Khalil retreats. He comes to accept the consequences of his actions and attempts to reconstruct his life, but an unexpected visitor from his past may destroy all that he has worked to rebuild. Eventually, futile efforts to handle life on her own push Talia into the arms of Christ and give her the hope that she needs to believe that her marriage can be healed. Just when all seems well, she is blindsided by tragedy, causing her faith and relationships to be stretched to the limit. Pain's Purpose is the first in a series that tells the story of reconciliation, forgiveness, and discovery of unconditional love.

Often times as believers we are made to feel like we should not have to endure any pain, but not true. The more anointed you are, the more you will be tried. The more gifted you are, the more you will be tested. This book brings a sense of reality to your pain in order to find meaning. Part of understanding your pain is acknowledging it and accepting the process that comes with it. This book is intended to highlight that. Often times your perspective of pain can hinder you from seeing the bigger picture-- that there is a purpose in this somewhere. The process is intended to help someone else. There will always be challenges in life. How you face those challenges sets the tone for how you maneuver through life. This book is written specifically to anyone who has ever experienced pain and did not understand why or was not sure of how to move forward. Understanding the process can help you move from hurting to healing to wholeness. This book is written to offer insight. This is written to offer hope.
