Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Care for Australia's children and elderly is provided in a mixed economy, in which for-profit providers are playing an increasingly important role alongside more traditional government and non-government organisations. Does the growth of for-profit provision affect the quality of services or of jobs in paid care? Does it change the political dynamics of the social care sector in contemporary welfare states? How might service users, their families, and organisations work together to sustain and improve the quality of care services? What theories and evidence help us to understand the process and consequences of the shift toward for-profit provision of social care? In nine chapters by leading researchers, this book explores these and other questions, to inform policy and practice in this key field of social policy.

Book excerpt: Australia is at a much-needed turning point in work, care and family policy. Australian women, families and communities are struggling to manage the complex demands of work and care. Rapid social and demographic change, alongside new workplace, labour market trends and the aftermath of the COVID-19 pandemic, requires a policy revamp that will allow all Australians to work, care and be cared for. In seven chapters authored by leading scholars in the field, At a Turning Point: Work, care and family policies in Australia provides a comprehensive account of key policy areas that shape the experience of work and care across the life course. These include reproductive wellbeing, paid parental leave, early childhood education and care, flexible work, elder and disability care, and equitable systems of tax and transfer payments. At a Turning Point argues that a new social contract that puts gender equality, economic security and the well-being of carers and those they care for at the centre of policy design is essential to national productivity and prosperity. It is the foundation of a good society.

Book excerpt: Providing a broad portrayal of how child participation is implemented in practice today, this volume brings together prominent authors from the US, Canada, the UK, Ireland, New Zealand, Australia and Israel, to present descriptions of innovative programmes that engage children and youth in decision-making processes, as well as insightful findings regarding what children, their families and professionals think about these programmes. Beyond its contribution to the empirical evidence on the ways in which children engage in decision-making processes, it also contributes to the theoretical development of the meaning of 'participation', 'citizenship', 'inclusiveness' and 'relational rights' in regards to children and youth.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "It is estimated that in 2003 there were 474,600 primary carers providing care to a person because of disability or old age. In coming decades, as the Australian population ages, the number of carers is projected to increase. Despite the large number of carers in Australia and the likely increase in their numbers, relatively little is known about the impact upon families of providing care. This report begins to fill the gap. The analysis is based upon data from a nationally representative survey, conducted in 2006, of 1,002 carers who receive an Australian Government payment directed towards carers (Carer Payment and/or Carer Allowance). Carers were selected from a random sample of 5,000 carers from Centrelink records who, at June 2006, were receiving Carer Payment and/or Carer Allowance. This research was a collaborative project between the Australian Institute of Family Studies (AIFS) and the Department of Families, Housing, Community Services and Indigenous Affairs (FaHCSIA). The aims of this report are to: examine the effect of caring on family and social relationships; document the social, emotional, physical and financial impact on families of caring for a person with a disability; examine the effect of caring on labour force status."--P. xiii.

Book excerpt: Recent developments in the world economy, including deindustrialisation and the digital revolution, have led to an increasingly individualistic relationship between workers and employers, which in turn has weakened labour movements and worker representation. However, this process is not universal, including in some countries of Asia, where trade unions are closely aligned with the interests of the dominant political party and the state. This book considers the many challenges facing trade unions and worker representation in a wide range of Asian countries. For each country, full background is given on how trade unions and other forms of worker representation have arisen. Key questions then considered include the challenges facing trade unions and worker representation in each country, the extent to which these are a result of global or local developments and the actions being taken by trade unions and worker representative bodies to cope with the challenges. This book is dedicated to the memory of Professor Keith Thurley, London School of Economics.

The implications of this are not just political; they are very personal. At some stage in life, most of us will help an elderly friend, parent, partner, relative or spouse make important decisions about their health and wellbeing, housing, care, finances, legal affairs and end of life care. This book has been written for any Australian who loves and cares for an elderly parent or other person, anyone responsible for an elderly persons wellbeing, or who simply wants to prepare for their own future. It includes practical strategies for assessing older peoples needs; dealing with family dynamics; finding home help; preventing falls and other accidents; moving into an aged care home; managing financial and legal affairs; and getting the best possible medical and end-of-life care.
