This book was released on 2023-09-01 with total page 331 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As part of research into the geological disposal of radioactive waste in Belgium, the HADES underground research laboratory (URL) was constructed in a clay formation in the early 1980s. This was the world's first purpose-built URL in a deep clay formation. Over the past four decades, the HADES URL has played an important role in the research, development and demonstration (RD&D) of geological disposal. It enabled the in situ characterization of the clay host rock, it allowed experiments to be performed under realistic geological conditions and it demonstrated the feasibility of constructing, operating and closing underground repositories. This volume presents several key contributions of the HADES URL to both Belgian and international research into geological disposal. It not only compiles some important RD&D results, but also illustrates the essential role URLs such as the HADES URL have played in developing concepts for the geological disposal of radioactive waste.
Book Synopsis Nuclear Waste Disposal by : Alexei V. Byalko
Download or read book Nuclear Waste Disposal written by Alexei V. Byalko and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 1994-03-16 with total page 302 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides an important review of the present state and possible future development of high-level nuclear waste disposals. The author discusses the structure, thermal history, and dynamics of the earth's crust, explaining their importance in nuclear safety. The author presents critical reviews of disposal methods and proposes an original method for high-level nuclear waste disposal that involves placing capsules with nuclear waste into deep boreholes filled with sulfur. The behavior of such a complex system is analyzed, considering such aspects as thermodynamics, hydrodynamics, possible chemical and mineralogical reactions, radionuclides diffusion, and mass transfer. The book takes a physical approach to nuclear waste disposal making it different from other books that take a geological viewpoint. A diskette included with the book provides modeling executive programs and Pascal computer codes that will be valuable for developing an in-depth understanding of calculations.

Book Synopsis Defence Nuclear Waste Disposal in Russia: International Perspective by : M.J. Stenhouse
Download or read book Defence Nuclear Waste Disposal in Russia: International Perspective written by M.J. Stenhouse and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 347 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Significant amounts of liquid and solid radioactive waste have been generated in Russia during the production of nuclear weapons, and there is an urgent need to find suitable ways to manage these wastes in a way that protects both the current population and future generations. This book contains contributions from pure and applied scientists and other representatives from Europe, North America, and Russia, who are, or have been, actively involved in the field of radioactive waste management and disposal. First-hand experience of specific problems associated with defence-related wastes in the USA and the Russian Federation is presented, and current plans are described for the disposal of solid wastes arising from civilian nuclear power production programmes in other countries, including Belgium, Bulgaria, Canada, Germany and the UK. The book provides a good insight into ongoing research at local and national level within Russia, devoted to the safe disposal of defence-related radioactive waste. It also demonstrates how existing expertise and technology from civilian nuclear waste management programmes can be applied to solving the problems created by nuclear defence programmes. Contributions address methods of immobilisation, site selection methodology, site characterisation techniques and data interpretation, the key elements of safety/performance assessments of planned deep (geological) repositories for radioactive waste, and radionuclide transport modelling. Concerns associated with certain specific nuclear waste disposal concepts and repository sites are also presented.

Book Synopsis Multiple Roles of Clays in Radioactive Waste Confinement by : S. Norris
Download or read book Multiple Roles of Clays in Radioactive Waste Confinement written by S. Norris and published by Geological Society of London. This book was released on 2019-08-05 with total page 364 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This Special Publication highlights the importance of clays and clayey material, and their multiple roles, in many national geological disposal facilities for higher activity radioactive wastes. Clays can be both the disposal facility host rock and part of its intrinsic engineered barriers, and may be present in the surrounding geological environment. Clays possess various characteristics that make them high-quality barriers to the migration of radionuclides and chemical contaminants, e.g. very little water movement, diffusive transport, retention capacity, self-sealing capacity, stability over millions of years, homogeneity and lateral continuity.

This book was released on 2011-10-17 with total page 387 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume – like the NATO Advanced Research Workshop on which it is based – addresses the fundamental science that contributes to our understanding of the potential risks from ecological terrorism, i.e. dirty bombs, atomic explosions, intentional release of radionuclides into water or air. Both effects on human health (DNA and systemic effects) and on ecosystems are detailed, with particular focus on environmentally relevant low-dose ranges. The state-of-the-art contributions to the book are authored by leading experts; they tackle the relevant questions from the perspectives of radiation genetics, radiobiology, radioecology, radiation epidemiology and risk assessment.
