Book excerpt: The Nlha7kápmx people are among the original inhabitants of the Fraser, Thompson, and Nicola river valleys in southwestern British Columbia. In this collection of traditional oral narratives and legends, which have been passed from generation to generation for centuries, the elders tell the story of their people. Put together entirely by Nlha7kápmx people, Our Tellings reveals how they perceive their own history. It is their hope that through sharing these stories, they will inspire others to continue to create stories and to contribute to the cultural revitalization of Canada's Native peoples.

Book excerpt: In 1948, thirteen-year-old Bill Boyd and his stepfather, Daddy Philpot, joined this westward migration, wondering if it were still possible to double or triple an Okie's wage in California. They traveled Route 66, a national highway that stretched from Chicago to Los Angeles. The rigors of the 1,500-mile journey did not diminish their hopes as they hitchhiked West and dreamed of the California riches they would use to bring the rest of their family out West.

A letter from a long-dead client propels Miles into a cross-country race against time and shadowy adversaries, forcing him to revert to lessons learned in bare-knuckle brawls in the miners bars of Idaho's Silver Valley when he finds himself in the cross hairs of someone who doesn't want him to find the answers he is seeking.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With his wife, Sandra, Brian was in a party of ‘Nature-seekers’; amateur naturalists who had, the previous day, flown in from faraway Sussex, and who were on their way to southern Morocco for a bit of desert birding and a bit of African sun. They had now stopped in a village called Taddert for their first “Maroc” lunch, and so far, it had all been a bit... well, a bit dispiriting. Crystal Balls and Moroccan Walls is another irreverent and provocative account of an expedition made by Brian and his wife, this time to that part of Morocco that lies to the south of the Atlas Mountains. However, it is also a prognostication... Southern Morocco doesn’t live up to Brian’s expectations. So, to brighten the dismal prospect of a dismal trip through the desert, Brian refers to a series of ‘crystal balls’, balls from which he is able to forecast the state of Britain in just forty years’ time. This means that there is still a consideration of the merits of tajines, a description of ‘fat sand rats’, and a thorough assessment of all those Moroccan walls, but there is also so much more. For example, there is an explanation of how Scotland, by mid-century, has changed its name to Trumpland and how its southern neighbour, by this same time, has begun to sell itself to potential visitors from the Far East as ‘Ye Olde Solde-Offe England’. There is even a review of some of the latest film offerings by this date – such as No Great Expectations… This unusual work is the penultimate book in David’s seven-part series that details Brian and Sandra’s travels to Assam, Syria, Borneo, Cape Verde, Namibia/Botswana, Morocco and Zambia. It is book number one in David’s ‘shameless subversion’ of the travel-book genre.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There are distant shouts, rifle shots, the pounding of feet across the bridge, the sound of running. A woman’s scream carves the night then bubbles away. In 1930 the superintendent of a mission on a Queensland island, driven mad by his wife’s death, goes on a murderous rampage. Fearing for their lives, the other whites arm a young Indigenous man and order him to shoot Uncle Boss dead. The Multiple Effects of Rainshadow traces the lead-up to this bloody showdown and the repercussions in the years after—for Aboriginal people and the colonial overseers. Thea Astley was born in Brisbane in 1925. Her first novel, Girl with a Monkey, was published in 1958 and her third, The Well Dressed Explorer (1962), won the Miles Franklin Literary Award. Many notable books followed, among them the groundbreaking A Kindness Cup (1974), which addressed frontier massacres of Indigenous Australians, and It’s Raining in Mango (1987). Her last novel was Drylands (1999), her fourth Miles Franklin winner. Her fiction is distinguished by vivid imagery and metaphor; a complex, ironic style; and a desire to highlight oppression and social injustice. One of the most distinctive and influential Australian novelists of the twentieth century, Astley died in 2004. A lifelong chain-smoker famed for her sharp wit, Thea Astley died in 2004, the year after her husband died. She remains one of the most distinctive and influential Australian novelists of the twentieth century. ‘Passion, brilliance and originality.’ Sydney Morning Herald ‘Formidable...Uniquely provocative, acerbic and glittering.’ Australian
