Book excerpt: The chemical oxidation of ferrocene and related derivatives (RFc) via organic peroxides solvated in acetonitrile was studied spectrophotometrically by varying concentration and temperature to determine kinetics and activation parameters. The reaction rate of ferrocene with dibenzoyl peroxide depends strongly on whether electron withdrawing or donating substituents are present. Products were analyzed and the effect of different solvents on reactivity were studied. The rate law was first order in both oxidant and reductant, and steric and solvent effects are consistent with outer sphere electron transfer (ET) as the rate-controlling step. B3YLP calculations were conducted to determine reorganization energies using Marcus theory and to examine molecular geometry and steric considerations.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Oxidation of ferrocene was accomplished by reacting Fc with benzoyl peroxide (C6H5CO2OCOC6H5), hydrogen peroxide (H2O2), and tetranitromethane (TNM) to produce the ferricenium cation (Fc+). Ferrocene reacts with TNM instantaneously to produce Fc+, whereas the peroxides oxidize Fc to produce two moles of Fc+ per mole of peroxide. The blue ferricenium cation was stable to air, oxygen, and water in acidic aqueous acetonitrile solvent. The time dependence of oxidation of Fc to Fc+ depended linearly on the concentration of Fc and the concentration of the oxidants, but was independent of acid concentration, affording a rate expression d[Fc +]/dt = k[Fc] [peroxide]. Activation parameters obtained from the temperature dependence of the rate constants k were determined using the Eyring equation, d[ln(k/T)] = ln(kappakB/h) - DeltaH ‡/RT + DeltaS‡/R. For hydrogen peroxide, DeltaH ‡ = 11.0 +/- 1.9 kcal/mol and DeltaS‡ = -27.5 +/- 0.5 eu, and for benzoyl peroxide, DeltaH ‡ = 9.8 + 0.9 kcal/mol and DeltaS‡ = -28.1 + 0.2 eu. The energy DeltaG estimated for thermodynamic electron transfer from reported values of redox potentials (Eo ox = 0.56-0.62 V vs. NHE for oxidation of Fc and Eo red = -(0.63-0.68) V for reduction of hydrogen peroxide) and the Nerst equation is 13-14 kcal/mol, as compared to the observed activation energy DeltaG ‡ = 19.1 kcal/mol at 22°C.

Book Synopsis Handbook of sol-gel science and technology. 1. Sol-gel processing by : Sumio Sakka
Download or read book Handbook of sol-gel science and technology. 1. Sol-gel processing written by Sumio Sakka and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2005 with total page 716 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since Dr. Disiich of Germany prepared a glass lens by the sol-gel method around 1970, sol-gel science and technology has continued to develop. Since then this field has seen remarkable technical developments as well as a broadening of the applications of sol-gel science and technology. There is a growing need for a comprehensive reference that treats both the fundamentals and the applications, and this is the aim of "Handbook of Sol-Gel Science and Technology."The primary purpose of sol-gel science and technology is to produce materials, active and non-active including optical, electronic, chemical, sensor, bio- and structural materials. This means that sol-gel science and technology is related to all kinds of manufacturing industries. Thus Volume 1, "Sol-Gel Processing," is devoted to general aspects of processing. Newly developed materials such as organic-inorganic hybrids, photonic crystals, ferroelectric coatings, photocatalysts will be covered. Topics in this volume include: Volume 2, "Characterization of Sol-Gel Materials and Products, "highlights the important fact that useful materials are only produced when characterization is tied to processing. Furthermore, characterization is essential to the understanding of nanostructured materials, and sol-gel technology is a most important technology in this new field. Since nanomaterials display their functional property based on their nano- and micro-structure, "characterization" is very important. Topics found in Volume 2 include: Sol-gel technology is a versatile technology, making it possible to produce a wide variety of materials and to provide existing substances with novel properties. This technology was applied to producingnovel materials, for example organic-inorganic hybrids, which are quite difficult to make by other fabricating techniques, and it was also applied to producing materials based on high temperature superconducting oxides. "Applications of Sol-Gel Technology," (Volume 3), will cover applications such as:
