Book excerpt: Less than 10% of beef cow-calf producers in the United States currently implement reproductive technologies such as estrous synchronization and artificial insemination (AI) as a component of their breeding management program. Synchronization protocols aid in the synchrony of estrus and ovulation to improve cattle fertility, however, many protocols often require multiple hormone injections and animal handlings. Development of estrous synchronization protocols that limit number of injections, cost, and labor inputs, without compromising fertility, may improve the adoption of fixed-time artificial insemination (FTAI) within the beef industry. The main objective of the first study was to compare the effect of a single injection of high-concentration (HICON) prostaglandin F2[alpha] (PGF) or two conventional PGF injections (2PGF) administered 8 h apart at controlled internal drug release insert (CIDR) removal, on reducing serum progesterone (P4) before FTAI and on subsequent pregnancy per artificial insemination (P/AI) in postpartum beef cows (n=404) synchronized with a 5-d CO-Synch + CIDR breeding program. Serum P4 concentration at the time of insemination is a determining factor of cattle fertility in FTAI protocols, as lower concentrations have been associated with increased P/AI. A secondary objective of the first study was to assess the relationship between P4 concentration at the time of insemination and probability of pregnancy to AI. Progesterone concentrations at AI were lesser in 2PGF than HICON, however, P/AI was not different between treatments. Probability of pregnancy decreased as P4 concentration at AI increased and the optimal P4 cutoff concentration to optimize fertility was determined at 0.43 ng/mL. Intramuscular (i.m.) route of injection is commonly used to administer products used in estrous synchronization in beef cattle; however, this route causes greater incidence of injection-site lesions and tissue damage associated with reduced beef carcass quality and tenderness than subcutaneous (s.c.) routes. Therefore, use of s.c. administration is favorable to reduce carcass damage. The objective of the second study was to compare the ability of a single s.c. injection of high-concentration PGF (HICON-SC) with two i.m. injections of conventional PGF 6 h apart (2PGF-IM) to reduce P4 concentration and induce luteolysis by the time of AI in a 5-d CO-Synch + CIDR synchronization program in postpartum beef cows. A similar decline in P4 concentration occurred in both treatments following PGF, indicating s.c. administration of HICON could be an effective alternative to i.m. administration of the conventional double PGF dose to induce luteolysis before AI in the 5-d CO-Synch + CIDR protocol.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cattle play a fundamental role in animal agriculture throughout the world. They not only provide us with a vital food source, but they also provide us with fertilizer and fuel. Keeping reproduction levels at an optimum level is therefore essential, but this is often a complicated process, especially with modern, high yielding cows. Written in a practical and user-friendly style, this book aims to help the reader understand cattle reproduction by explaining the underlying physiology of the reproductive process and the role and importance of pharmacology and technology, and showing how management techniques can improve reproductive efficiency. This edition includes: Recent research findings on the physiology of the oestrous cycle and its control; New techniques for monitoring and manipulating reproduction, including pregnancy diagnosis and embryo transfer; Advice on identifying common infertility problems and how to prevent and treat them. Reproduction Cattle 3e is essential reading for veterinary and agricultural students, as well as veterinarians and farmers involved in cattle reproduction.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book describes the life cycle of a unique endocrine gland that is absolutely essential for the establishment and maintenance of pregnancy in all mammalian species. The corpus luteum is unique because it is formed and destroyed every (non-fertile) reproductive cycle. When fertilization occurs, the corpus luteum is rescued or maintained. The processes that control corpus luteum formation, demise (luteolysis), or maintenance are just beginning to be unraveled in recent years; they involve diverse cell types and mechanisms. Some of these processes resemble tumor development—angiogenesis, for instance—but interestingly enough, this resemblance is only up to a point. The corpus luteum uses mechanisms that allow its normal, physiological growth and disappearance. Pulling together key research on the corpus luteum, this volume is of interest to both reproductive endocrinologists and comparative physiologists, with clinical relevance spanning comparative animal studies to women's health.

Book excerpt: A comprehensive, cutting-edge review of the complex interactions between maternal and fetal-placental tissues that control the establishment and maintenance of pregnancy, the proper development of the fetus, the birth process, and the behavioral aspects of bonding between mother and newborn. Expert researchers review the endocrine and physiological events that culminate in the delivery of offspring, and provide a solid base of comparative information on the menstrual cycle of primates, including humans. They also discuss the sources and functions of both steroid and protein hormones from the placenta and the details of their effects on uterine function, placental development, fetal growth and well-being, and maternal responses to pregnancy. This book will become the standard reference source not only for reproductive scientists, but also for those clinicians who want better to understand the complex factors that affect pregnancy-and their pregnant patients.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Molecular biology emerged from advances in biochemistry during the 1940s and 1950s, when the structure of the nucleic acids and proteins were elucidated. Beginning in the 1970s, with nucleic acid enzymology and the discovery of the restriction enzymes, the tools of molecular biology became widely available and applied in cell biology to study how genes are regulated. This new knowledge impacted endocrinology and reproductive biology since it was largely known that the secretion of the internal glands affected the phenotypes, and expression of genes. Modern reproductive biology encompasses every level of biological study from genomics to ecology, encompassing cell biology, biochemistry, endocrinology and general physiology. All of these disciplines require a basic knowledge, both as a tool and as an essential aid to a fundamental understanding of the principles of life in health and disease. Overall, molecular biology is central to scientific studies in all living matter, impacting disciplines such as medicine, related health sciences, veterinary, agriculture and environmental sciences. In this book, the basic biochemistry of nucleic acids and proteins are reviewed. Methodologies used to study signaling and gene regulation in the endocrine/reproductive system are also discussed. Topics include mechanisms of hormone action and several endocrine disorders affecting the reproductive system. Professionals in the medical, veterinary and animal sciences fields will find exciting and stimulating material enhancing the breadth and quality of their research.
