With the global movement of more relaxed policies and attitudes towards cannabis use, it is important to understand the risks associated with cannabis on youth development. Bridging the gap between knowledge communications and research literature, this volume translates scientific evidence to highlight the consequences of cannabis exposure on young people’s lives. Based on academic research literature, it summarizes and critically analyses a large body of scientific evidence to evaluate developmental outcomes from birth to young adulthood on physical, social, and mental health. It will appeal to students and academics, as well as policy makers, psychologists, medical professionals, and epidemiologists in the broader academic community with an interest in the topic.

Book excerpt: The Assessment Checklist series, created by Michael Tarren-Sweeney, provides the world’s first standardised caregiver-report measures of a range of attachment- and trauma-related mental health difficulties experienced amongst children growing up in foster, adoptive, kinship and residential care. This clinical manual provides essential guidance for child and adolescent mental health clinicians who use the Assessment Checklist measures, including the Assessment Checklist for Children (ACC), the Assessment Checklist for Adolescents (ACA) and the Brief Assessment Checklists (BAC), as part of their specialized assessments of children and adolescents in care. Split into three parts, the book explores all aspects of using and interpreting the Checklist series. Part 1 provides an overview of the Assessment Checklist measures, the rationale for their development and instructions on how to use the measures for clinical assessment, screening and treatment monitoring. Part 2 provides expert guidance to clinicians on interpreting Assessment Checklist score profiles and provides detailed information about several specific types of mental health difficulties measured by them. Part 3 describes the development and psychometric properties of the various Assessment Checklist measures, including information about their validity and reliability. It also introduces several new measures that are under development. Ideal for clinical child psychologists, child and adolescent psychiatrists, child psychotherapists and clinical social workers looking to improve the quality and depth of their clinical assessments with children and adolescents, this book provides essential guidance on professional use of the Assessment Checklist measures.

Book excerpt: `This is the latest in a series of accessible, evidence-based resources from Jessica Kingsley Publishers for those seeking to understand and promote young people's mental health. Trawling through the evidence, the authors start by looking at the nature and prevalence of conduct disorders including attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder and how they relate to factors such as depression, substance misuse and learning disabilities. They also look at preventive methods and services available to adolescents in the wake of Ever Child Matters. The book then deals with different approaches to treatment, from individual programmes using cognitive behaviour therapy to family, school-based and pharmacological interventions. It suggests family therapies are the most promising, with little evidence supporting the efficacy of medication.' - Youth Work Now Offending behaviour in young people is a problem not only for affected neighbours and communities; it is also a serious problem for the young people involved. Behaviour problems and involvement in criminal activities have been linked to continued offending, substance misuse, lack of education and work - all factors that are linked, in turn, with shorter life expectancy. This book reviews the literature on a number of techniques and treatment approaches designed for use with adolescent conduct disorder and young offenders. The authors also provide an overview of the condition including its developmental pathway; the criteria for diagnosing conduct disorder, and services for adolescents. Conduct disorder and offending behaviour in young people are complex problems that need multi-agency, multifaceted solutions. This book aims to contribute to the design of services by drawing on a wide range of high-quality research, and presents it for the non-specialist. It is essential reading for child and adolescent mental health practitioners, social workers, youth offending teams and other professionals working with young people with conduct problems and their families.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Surveys administered to high school students, studies carried out on jail and prison inmates, and interviews conducted with substance abusers undergoing treatment all point to the same conclusion: drugs and crime are strongly connected. Why they are connected is less well understood, however. Written for middle to upper-level undergraduate courses on drugs and crime or substance abuse and crime, this book examines the drug-crime connection in a systematic and comprehensive way. This book covers the entire drug-crime spectrum, starting with a review of drug and crime terminology, classification and theory, and ending with policy implications for prevention, harm reduction, and macro-level management of the drug-crime problem. The opening chapters discuss drugs and crime separately for the purpose of setting the stage for later discussions on drug-crime relationships. As the book proceeds, the boundaries between drugs and crime blur, thus revealing the complex and intimate relationship that links these two behaviors.

Book excerpt: Researchers, practitioners, journalists and politicians increasingly recognise that foster care throughout the world is in a state of crisis. There are more and more children needing care and, as residential alternatives dry up, more of these children are being assigned to foster families. This book reports the major findings of a two-year longitudinal study of 235 such children who entered the foster care system in Southern Australia between 1998 and 1999. As well as examining the changing policy context of children's services, the book documents the psychosocial outcomes for these children, their feedback on their experiences of care, and the views of their social workers and carers. In the process, the book examines some cherished beliefs about foster care policy and sheds new light on them. The research reveals that while most children do quite well in foster care up to the two-year point, there is a worrying amount of placement instability at a time when the concentration of emotionally troubled children in care is increasing throughout the western world. Although, surprisingly, placement instability does not appear to produce psychosocial impairment for a period of up to eight months in care, it has an extreme effect on children who are moved from placement to placement because no carer will tolerate their behaviour. These children are consigned to a life of distribution and emotional upheaval because of the lack of alternative forms of care. Another unexpected finding of the research is that increasing the rate of parental contact achieves little or nothing in relation to the likelihood of family reunification. As child welfare increasingly enters a world of research-based practice, Children in Foster Care provides some much needed hard evidence of how foster care policy and practice can be improved.

This book was released on 1991-01-01 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Child Behavior Checklist for ages 4-18 is designed to record children's competencies and problems as reported by their parents or parent surrogates. It can be self-administered or administered by an interviewer. The 20 competence items obtain parents' reports of the amount and quality of their child's participation in sports, hobbies, games, activities, jobs and chores, and friendships; how well the child gets along with others and plays and works alone; and school functioning. Each of the 118 specific problem items and two open-ended problem items are scored on a 3-step response scale. The Checklist is intended as only one component of many, including teacher reports, standardized tests, physical assessment and direct assessment of the child. Reliability and validity are discussed.
