Book Synopsis Tanana River Monitoring and Research Program by : Lawrence W. Gatto
Download or read book Tanana River Monitoring and Research Program written by Lawrence W. Gatto and published by . This book was released on 1984 with total page 64 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: To determine if available data are useful in identifying the characteristics that contributed to erodibility of the banks along two reaches of the Tanana River, existing data on bank vegetation, soils, sediments, and permafrost were examined. Because these data were general and not collected for the purpose of site-specific analysis, an analytical approach was simple and did not include any statistical tests. The data were visually compared to the locations and estimated amounts of historical recession to evaluate if any relationships were obvious. The results of this analysis showed no useful relationships. Vegetation was similar in eroded and uneroded areas and its distribution did not show any obvious relationship to the locations of bank recession. Surface sediments and soils in the eroded and uneroded areas had little, if any, effect on bank erodibility because the river erodes the bank over its entire depth, which is well below this surface zone. The subsurface sediment from eroded and uneroded wells and along transects wtih high and low measured recession was similar. Permafrost occurrences are about equal in eroded and uneroded sites, although it appears that recession can be higher where permafrost is common than where it is absent. In most cases the existing data are either too general or not properly located to be useful in anticipating future locations of bank erosion. In order to predict future erosion, a field project should be initiated to evaluate the influences of bank characteristics and hydraulic forces on bank erosion rates.

Book Synopsis River Mechanics by : Pierre Y. Julien
Download or read book River Mechanics written by Pierre Y. Julien and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2018-04-12 with total page 527 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The second edition of Julien's textbook presents an analysis of rivers from mountain streams to river estuaries. The book is rooted in fundamental principles to promote sound engineering practice. State-of-the-art methods are presented to underline theory and engineering applications. River mechanics blends the dual concepts of water conveyance and sediment transport. Like the first edition, this textbook contains ample details on river equilibrium, river dynamics, bank stabilization, and river engineering. Complementary chapters also cover the physical and mathematical modeling of rivers. As well as being completely updated throughout, three new chapters have been added on watershed dynamics, hillslope stability, and stream restoration. Throughout the text, hundreds of examples, exercises, problems, and case studies assist the reader in learning the essential concepts of river engineering. The textbook is very well illustrated to enhance advanced student learning, while researchers and practitioners will find the book to be an invaluable reference.
Book Synopsis Morphology, Hydraulics and Sediment Transport of an Ice-covered River by : Cold Regions Research and Engineering Laboratory (U.S.)
Download or read book Morphology, Hydraulics and Sediment Transport of an Ice-covered River written by Cold Regions Research and Engineering Laboratory (U.S.) and published by . This book was released on 1986 with total page 52 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This initial study of the ice-covered Tanana River, near Fairbanks, Alaska, attempted to 1) establish field methods for systematic and repetitive quantitative analyses of an ice-covered river's regime, 2) evaluate the instruments and equipment for sampling, and 3) obtain the initial data of a long-term study of ice cover effects on the morphology, hydraulics and sediment transport of a braided river. A methodology was established, and detailed measurements and samplings, including profiling by geophysical techniques, were conducted along cross sections of the river. A small, portable rotary drill rig equipped with a 356-mm (14-in.) ice auger was used to cut large diameter holes in the ice cover for through-the-ice measurements. Portable heat sources and a heated shelter were required to continuously thaw and dry equipment for the repetitive measurements. Measurements included ice cover thickness, water level, water depth, temperature, flow velocity, suspended load and bed load, frazil ice distribution and bed material composition. Remotely gathered data included apparent resistivity and subsurface radar profiling. The various techniques, sampling gear and problems encountered during use in the subfreezing cold are described in detail in this report.

Book Synopsis Proceedings of the Workshop on Applications of Remote Sensing in Hydrology by : G. W. Kite
Download or read book Proceedings of the Workshop on Applications of Remote Sensing in Hydrology written by G. W. Kite and published by The Institute. This book was released on 1990 with total page 396 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The two principal topics of this workshop were hydrological modelling and microwave radiometry. The hydrologic models session concentrated on applications of GOES, NOAA, and Landsat data in various hydrologic watershed models and contained discussion on means of increasing the utility of satellites for hydrologic modellers. The microwave hydrology session focused on promising applications and the benefits of this method of data collection for monitoring, modelling and forecasting at field and basin scales. The publication includes the texts of all session presentations and related workshops. A list of participants concludes the proceedings.

Book Synopsis Sediment Transport in Gravel-Bed Rivers by : C. R. Thorne
Download or read book Sediment Transport in Gravel-Bed Rivers written by C. R. Thorne and published by . This book was released on 1987-09-28 with total page 1038 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Describes and quantifies the movement and storage of sediment in rivers with gravel-bed material, based upon scientific and engineering principles. Papers based on theory and experiment are interspersed with case studies. Until recently, gravel-bed rivers have been under-researched, when compared with sand-bed rivers. There is a heightened interest in these rivers now, due to pressure from water resources, forestry and recreational development in upland areas.
Book Synopsis International Conference on River Regime by : Dr. W. R. White
Download or read book International Conference on River Regime written by Dr. W. R. White and published by . This book was released on 1988 with total page 510 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Comprises the proceedings of the International Conference on River Regime held at Wallingford, England, May 1988. Describes recent advances in river regime theory, including full discussion of the newly-developed analytical approach. This new approach employs a theoretical description of the dominant fluvial process rather than a purely empirical approach. Also gives an account of the increasing range of application of regime theory, from canals to sand bed streams and rivers, and, more recently, to gravel bed rivers (the latter application still being refined). Provides the latest laboratory data and field data, addresses both empirical and analytical approaches, and looks at channel form, meandering, and many additional factors in the growing science of river regime theory.
