Book Synopsis Movement Disorder Emergencies by : Steven J. Frucht
Download or read book Movement Disorder Emergencies written by Steven J. Frucht and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2008-02-10 with total page 250 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Movement Disorder Emergencies: Diagnosis and Treatment provides a fresh and unique approach to what is already a high-profile subspecialty area in clinical neurology. The disorders covered in this volume are standard fare in the field but emphasize the urgencies and emergencies that can occur. One of the very attractive features of the field of movement disorders is that diagnosis is often based on unique visible and sometimes audible phenomenological symptoms and signs. Therefore, in this era of highly sophisticated laboratory and radiological diagnostic tools, the diagnosis of many movement disorders is still largely made in the clinic where pattern recognition is key. Crucial to astute clinical diagnosis is broad clinical experience. In short, you have to have seen one to recognize one! Patients with movement disorders nearly always present as outpatients but, as aptly recognized by Drs. Frucht and Fahn, this may include acute manifestations leading to emergency presentations, often in an emergency room setting, where they are very likely to be unrecognized and therefore poorly managed. The authors define an “emergency” movement disorder as one in which failure to promptly diagnose and treat may result in significant morbidity or mortality. However, they also stress the importance of certain “can’t miss” diagnoses such as Wilson’s disease, dopa-responsive dystonia, and Whipple’s disease in which delayed diagnosis in less emergent situations can lead to slowly evolving and often irreversible neurological damage with tragic consequences.
Book Synopsis Global Civil Society? by : John Keane
Download or read book Global Civil Society? written by John Keane and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2003-04-17 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: John Keane, a leading scholar of political theory, tracks the recent development of a big idea with fresh potency - global civil society. In this timely book, Keane explores the contradictory forces currently nurturing or threatening its growth, and he shows how talk of global civil society implies a political vision of a less violent world, founded on legally sanctioned power-sharing arrangements among different and intermingling forms of socio-economic life. Keane's reflections are pitted against the widespread feeling that the world is both too complex and too violent to deserve serious reflection. His account borrows from various scholarly disciplines, including political science and international relations, to challenge the silence and confusion within much of contemporary literature on globalisation and global governance. Against fears of terrorism, rising tides of xenophobia, and loose talk of 'anti-globalisation', the defence of global civil society mounted here implies the need for new democratic ways of living.

Book Synopsis Corporate Insolvency Law by : Vanessa Finch
Download or read book Corporate Insolvency Law written by Vanessa Finch and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2002-09-12 with total page 662 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Vanessa Finch provides an interesting look at corporate insolvency laws and processes. She adopts an interdisciplinary approach to place two questions at the centre of her discussion. Are current UK laws and procedures efficient, expert, accountable and fair? Are fundamentally different conceptions of insolvency law needed for it to develop in a way that serves corporate and broader social ends? Topics considered in this wide-ranging book include different ways of financing companies, causes of corporate failure and prospects for designing rescue-friendly processes. Also examined are alternative asset distribution of failed companies, allocations of insolvency risks and effects of insolvency on a company's directors and employees. Finch argues that changes of approach are needed if insolvency law is to develop with coherence and purpose. This book will appeal to academics and students at advanced undergraduate and graduate level, and to legal practitioners throughout the common law world.

Book Synopsis The Life of August Wilhelm Schlegel, Cosmopolitan of Art and Poetry by : Roger Paulin
Download or read book The Life of August Wilhelm Schlegel, Cosmopolitan of Art and Poetry written by Roger Paulin and published by Open Book Publishers. This book was released on 2016-02-01 with total page 680 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first full-scale biography, in any language, of a towering figure in German and European Romanticism: August Wilhelm Schlegel whose life, 1767 to 1845, coincided with its inexorable rise. As poet, translator, critic and oriental scholar, Schlegel's extraordinarily diverse interests and writings left a vast intellectual legacy, making him a foundational figure in several branches of knowledge. He was one of the last thinkers in Europe able to practise as well as to theorise, and to attempt to comprehend the nature of culture without being forced to be a narrow specialist. With his brother Friedrich, for example, Schlegel edited the avant-garde Romantic periodical Athenaeum; and he produced with his wife Caroline a translation of Shakespeare, the first metrical version into any foreign language. Schlegel's Lectures on Dramatic Art and Literature were a defining force for Coleridge and for the French Romantics. But his interests extended to French, Italian, Spanish and Portuguese literature, as well to the Greek and Latin classics, and to Sanskrit. August Wilhelm Schlegel is the first attempt to engage with this totality, to combine an account of Schlegel’s life and times with a critical evaluation of his work and its influence. Through the study of one man's rich life, incorporating the most recent scholarship, theoretical approaches, and archival resources, while remaining easily accessible to all readers, Paulin has recovered the intellectual climate of Romanticism in Germany and traced its development into a still-potent international movement. The extraordinarily wide scope and variety of Schlegel's activities have hitherto acted as a barrier to literary scholars, even in Germany. In Roger Paulin, whose career has given him the knowledge and the experience to grapple with such an ambitious project, Schlegel has at last found a worthy exponent.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The 2nd edition of this book provides an accessible, coherent and critical treatment of dispute resolution in Australia, and been restructured to take account of the considerable changes in alternative dispute resolution (ADR). Throughout the book, dispute resolution methods are considered in a theoretical, critical and evaluative light. A range of ADR processes across a spectrum of applications is considered, with special attention given to commercial, family, discrimination and international disputes. Insights drawn from domestic and international contexts are combined in a unique way throughout the book. While having a predominantly Australian focus, appropriate comparisons from other jurisdictions are frequently made. The book locates debates surrounding ADR in the context of the politics of gender and other aspects of identity, while examining the influences of other contemporary legal theories on ADR. It considers ADR in both its social and political contexts. This book will be useful to scholars of ADR, as well as lawyers, policy-makers, practitioners and students of dispute resolution.

Book Synopsis The Mediation of Poverty by : Joanna Redden
Download or read book The Mediation of Poverty written by Joanna Redden and published by Lexington Books. This book was released on 2014-02-19 with total page 191 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Mediation of Poverty: The News, New Media and Politics discusses the influence of the increasing use of digital technologies on media and political responses to poverty in the United Kingdom and Canada. Poverty politics are considered at symbolic and structural levels. Through a frame analysis of mainstream and alternative news content, the book identifies which narratives dominate poverty coverage, what is missing from mainstream news coverage, and what can be learned by looking at alternative sources of news and information. The Mediation of Poverty argues that news coverage privileges and embeds neoliberal approaches to the issue of poverty in Canada and the United Kingdom. Interviews with journalists, politicians, researchers, and activists enable discussion, on a micro level, of the changing nature of news, politics, and activism, and how these changes are influencing poverty politics. The book raises concerns about how the speed of digitally-mediated working environments is reshaping—even foreclosing—opportunities for communication, reflection, and contestation in a way that reinforces the dominance of market-based thinking, and limits political responses to poverty.
