Book Synopsis New Frontiers in Japanese Studies by : Akihiro Ogawa
Download or read book New Frontiers in Japanese Studies written by Akihiro Ogawa and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2020-04-02 with total page 385 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over the last 70 years, Japanese Studies scholarship has gone through several dominant paradigms, from ‘demystifying the Japanese’, to analysis of Japanese economic strength, to discussion of global interest in Japanese popular culture. This book assesses this literature, considering future directions for research into the 2020s and beyond. Shifting the geographical emphasis of Japanese Studies away from the West to the Asia-Pacific region, this book identifies topic areas in which research focusing on Japan will play an important role in global debates in the coming years. This includes the evolution of area studies, coping with aging populations, the various patterns of migration and environmental breakdown. With chapters from an international team of contributors, including significant representation from the Asia-Pacific region, this book enacts Yoshio Sugimoto’s notion of ‘cosmopolitan methodology’ to discuss Japan in an interdisciplinary and transnational context and provides overviews of how Japanese Studies is evolving in other Asian countries such as China and Indonesia. New Frontiers in Japanese Studies is a thought-provoking volume and will be of great interest to students and scholars of Japanese and Asian Studies. This book was released on 1994-01-29 with total page 358 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This very provocative book takes the reader on a “think-out-of-the-box” journey through the development of a treatment regimen for multiple myeloma called “dtZ”. It is a firsthand account of how more than 50 patients with myeloma were given a non-toxic, precisely-targeted, anti-cancer treatment that was specifically adapted to their individual cancers. These Individualized Anti-Cancer Targeted Therapies (smart bombs) have produced amongst the best responses as well as survival rates for myeloma. Accordingly, the author argues that some patients might even have been “cured” of their cancers. The concepts and logic behind “dtZ” are carefully presented in simple language so that both doctors and patients can easily understand them. Numerous tables and figures are provided, together with clear and simple explanations. This book is a valuable resource for all patients with myeloma who want to get the most out of their treatment by individualizing treatment to suit their needs, particularly for patients who have just been diagnosed with myeloma and who are taking that very important first step in their treatment. It is also a useful guide for doctors, nurses and researchers who treat and/or study myeloma.

Book Synopsis Rethinking Japanese Studies by : Kaori Okano
Download or read book Rethinking Japanese Studies written by Kaori Okano and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2017-08-04 with total page 246 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Japanese Studies has provided a fertile space for non-Eurocentric analysis for a number of reasons. It has been embroiled in the long-running internal debate over the so-called Nihonjinron, revolving around the extent to which the effective interpretation of Japanese society and culture requires non-Western, Japan-specific emic concepts and theories. This book takes this question further and explores how we can understand Japanese society and culture by combining Euro-American concepts and theories with those that originate in Japan. Because Japan is the only liberal democracy to have achieved a high level of capitalism outside the Western cultural framework, Japanese Studies has long provided a forum for deliberations about the extent to which the Western conception of modernity is universally applicable. Furthermore, because of Japan’s military, economic and cultural dominance in Asia at different points in the last century, Japanese Studies has had to deal with the issues of Japanocentrism as well as Eurocentrism, a duality requiring complex and nuanced analysis. This book identifies variations amongst Japanese Studies academic communities in the Asia-Pacific and examines the extent to which relatively autonomous scholarship, intellectual approach or theories exist in the region. It also evaluates how studies on Japan in the region contribute to global Japanese Studies and explores their potential for formulating concrete strategies to unsettle Eurocentric dominance of the discipline.

Book Synopsis Crisis Narratives, Institutional Change, and the Transformation of the Japanese State by : Sebastian Maslow
Download or read book Crisis Narratives, Institutional Change, and the Transformation of the Japanese State written by Sebastian Maslow and published by State University of New York Press. This book was released on 2021-11-01 with total page 296 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mired in national crises since the early 1990s, Japan has had to respond to a rapid population decline; the Asian and global financial crises; the 2011 triple disaster of earthquake, tsunami, and the Fukushima nuclear meltdown; the COVID-19 pandemic; China’s economic rise; threats from North Korea; and massive public debt. In Crisis Narratives, Institutional Change, and the Transformation of the Japanese State, established specialists in a variety of areas use a coherent set of methodologies, aligning their sociological, public policy, and political science and international relations perspectives, to account for discrepancies between official rhetoric and policy practice and actual perceptions of decline and crisis in contemporary Japan. Each chapter focuses on a distinct policy field to gauge the effectiveness and the implications of political responses through an analysis of how crises are narrated and used to justify policy interventions. Transcending boundaries between issue areas and domestic and international politics, these essays paint a dynamic picture of the contested but changing nature of social, economic, and, ultimately political institutions as they constitute the transforming Japanese state.
