Book excerpt: In 1528, the Spanish explorer Alvar Nunez Cabeza de Vaca and his three companions were shipwrecked and, looking for help, began an eight-year trek through the deserts of the American West. Over three centuries later, the four "Great Surveys" in the United States were consolidated into the U.S. Geological Survey. The frontiers were the lands near or beyond the recognized international, national, regional, or tribal borders. Over the centuries, they hosted a complicated series of international explorations of lands inhabited by American Indians, Spanish, French-Canadians, British, and Americans. These explorations were undertaken for wide-ranging reasons including geographical, scientific, artistic-literary, and for the growth of the railroad. This history covers over 350 years of exploration of the West.

This is an OCR edition with typos. Excerpt from book: CHAPTER III THE SETTLEMENT OF THE LOUISIANA PURCHASE AND THE ADJUSTMENT OF BOUNDARIES TO 1821 Surrender of Louisiana to the United States.? The formal surrender of Louisiana to the United States took place at two different points along the Mississippi. Before a crowd of people that filled the Cabildo, Peter Clement Laussat delivered the keys of New Orleans to William C. C. Claiborne, the agent of the United States government, and absolved the subjects of France from further allegiance to the First Consul. Claiborne then welcomed them as citizens of the United States and assured them that they would be protected in their liberty, property, and religion, and that their agriculture and commerce would be fostered and encouraged in every way possible. This was in December, 1803. Upper Louisiana was surrendered at St. Louis in a much less formal manner. Major Amos Stoddard was chosen by the French Republic as its representative, and on March 9, 1804, he received the territory from the Spanish representatives, surrendering it the next day to officials of the United States. Public sentiment and the cession.?The transfer of Louisiana to the United States brought keen disappointment to the majority of people living in the territory. The inhabitants of New Orleans were particularly incensed at the new order of things. Not only did the official sent out by the Congress of the United States have no knowledge of their language, customs, and laws, but he lacked personal interest in the prosperity of the community. Laussat, however, who remained in the country a few months after the cession, understood that such sentiments could not last. He alsoappreciated fully what the Americans had gained and what France had lost. The Americans he said] have given fifteen millions of dollars for ...

Book excerpt: This collection, assembled in cooperation with the Yale University Library and the Newberry Library, makes available the basic printed sources for the exploration, settlement and development of the Trans-Mississippi West. It spans the years from 1791 to 1944; that is, from the first explorations down to the end of the frontier. Geographically it covers the region from the Spanish borderlands on the south to the Arctic Ocean on the north; from the Mississippi Valley and Hudson's Bay on the east to the Pacific Ocean and Bering Straits on the west. The purpose of the collection is to provide the materials necessary for instruction ranging from specialized graduate seminars to a general undergraduate survey course on frontier history. Among the major topics covered are: exploration, both governmental and private; contacts between Indians and whites, including missions, trade, governmental relations and Indian wars; the fur trade, both by land and sea; Manifest Destiny, as shown in such events as the Oregon question, the Texas Revolution and the Mexican War; the role of the Hudson's Bay Company in the Canadian West; the mining frontier, not only in the California gold rush of '49 but also Fraser River, Pike's Peak, Nevada and the Klondike; the Mormon experience, the coming of the Pacific railroads; the day of the cattleman, and the farmer from homesteader to big businessman.
