Book Synopsis Nautilus to Columbia by : James C. Goodall

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A highly illustrated history of the US Navy's nuclear submarine program, from the postwar years to the 2020 Columbia-class SSBNs. James C. Goodall covers the origins, design and development of the US Navy's fleet of nuclear-powered submarines. This program was developed under the command of Hiram G. Rickover, the “Father of the Nuclear Navy” who oversaw the commissioning of the very first nuclear-powered attack submarine, the USS Nautilus (SSN 571) in 1952. This was a truly revolutionary design. Until the advent of nuclear power, the world's submarine fleets traveled on the surface at night to charge their batteries, and only dove below the surface when enemy ships or planes were spotted. With the development of the USS Nautilus, the US Navy now had the ability to stay submerged for not just hours or days, but to hide out of harm's way for weeks or months at a time This highly illustrated book covers all of the 220+ submarine hulls built and delivered to the US Navy from the USS Nautilus through to the Navy's newest class of submarine, the Columbia class SSBNs. The story of the Nuclear Navy from its origins up to the present day is told through more than 1,300 images from official and archive sources, as well as the author's own personal collection, some of which have never been published before.

Download or read book Forged in War written by Gary E. Weir and published by Naval Historical Center. This book was released on 1993 with total page 340 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is the first to analyze the partnership between the Navy, industry, and science forged by World War II and responsible for producing submarines in the United States in the period from 1940 through 1961. The naval-industrial complex was not the result of a single historical event. Neither was it a political-economic entity. Instead it was made up of many unique and distinct components, all of which developed simultaneously; each reflected the development, significance, and construction of a particular vessel or technology within its historical context. Together these components emerged from World War II as a network of distinct relationships linked together by the motives of national defense, mutual growth, and profit. None of the major players in the drama planned or predetermined the naval-industrial complex, and it did not conform to the views of any individual or confirm the value of a particular system of management. Instead it grew naturally in response to the political environment, strategic circumstances, and perceived national need, its character defined gradually not only by the demands of international conflict but also by the scores of talented people interested in the problems and possibilities of submarine warfare. Their combined efforts during this short period of time produced remarkable advances in nuclear propulsion, submerged speed, quieting, underwater sound, and weaponry, as well as a greater appreciation within the Navy and the shipbuilding industry for the ocean environment. This book won the Roosevelt Prize for naval history.

Book Synopsis Death of the USS Thresher by : Norman Polmar
Download or read book Death of the USS Thresher written by Norman Polmar and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2004-04-01 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On the morning of April 10, 1963, the world's most advanced submarine was on a test dive off the New England coast when she sent a message to a support ship a thousand feet above her on the surface: experiencing minor problem . . . have positive angle . . . attempting to blow . . . Then came the sounds of air under pressure and a garbled message: . . . test depth . . . Last came the eerie sounds that experienced navy men knew from World War II: the sounds of a submarine breaking up and compartments collapsing. When she first went to sea in April of 1961, the U.S. nuclear submarine Thresher was the most advanced submarine at sea, built specifically to hunt and kill Soviet submarines. In The Death of the USS Thresher, renowned naval and intelligence consultant Norman Polmar recounts the dramatic circumstances surrounding her implosion, which killed all 129 men on board, in history's first loss of a nuclear submarine. This revised edition of Polmar's 1964 classic is based on interviews with the Thresher's first command officer, other submarine officers, and the designers of the submarine. Polmar provides recently declassified information about the submarine, and relates the loss to subsequent U.S. and Soviet nuclear submarine sinkings, as well as to the escape and rescue systems developed by the Navy in the aftermath of the disaster. The Death of the USS Thresher is a must-read for the legions of fans who enjoyed the late Peter Maas's New York Times best-seller The Terrible Hours.

Book Synopsis Electric Boat Corporation by : James S. Reyburn
Download or read book Electric Boat Corporation written by James S. Reyburn and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2006-08-07 with total page 128 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Electric Boat Corporation has been a world leader in submarine development, design, and construction for more than a century. In 1900, the company delivered the Holland, the first submarine accepted by the United States Navy. Fifty-five years later, it turned fantasy into fact by sending the world’s first nuclear-powered ship, the submarine Nautilus, off on its maiden voyage. It later built the world’s first ballistic missile–firing submarine, the George Washington, and most of the nation’s current underseas fleet. Between those years, it pioneered standardized construction of merchant ships, submarine chasers, torpedo boats, and yachts and also produced airplanes, fishing trawlers, diesel engines, and electric motors. This collection of more than 200 archival photographs traces the company’s sometimes roller-coaster existence through 10 historic decades when America—and Electric Boat Corporation—grew into an industrial giant. It is an engaging collective portrait of American ingenuity, know-how, and persistence driving technology to new heights.

Download or read book Rickover written by Thomas B. Allen and published by Potomac Books, Inc.. This book was released on 2007 with total page 135 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hyman G. Rickover was not long removed from his Jewish roots in Poland when he graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy in 1922. After a respectable career spent mostly in unglamorous submarine and engineering billets, he took command of the U.S. Navy's nuclear propulsion program and revived his career, being retired--involuntarily--some thirty years later in early 1982. He was not only the architect of the nuclear Navy but also its builder. In the process, he erected a network of power and influence that rivaled those who were elected to high office, and that protected him from them when his controversial methods became objectionable or, as critics would suggest, undermined the nation's vital interests. Authors Thomas B. Allen and Norman Polmar, whose full-length biography of Rickover (in manuscript in 1981) was consulted by the Reagan Administration during the decision to remove him from active duty, are eminently qualified to write an essential treatment on the controversial genius of Admiral Rickover.
