Book excerpt: Excerpt from Over the Sea With the Sailor: Christmas, 1880 Therefore I cannot stop here to expound at length my great theory that at times there falls upon the nations of the earth a plague or pestilence of stupidity, wrong headedness, or madness, whereby evil ap pears good. No remedy has been found for this disease, and the only medicine yet tried - that of continual talk, stump orato and leading articles - has only, as yet, e the mischief worse. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Ship and Shore, in Madeira, Lisbon, and the Mediterranean and Sea and Sailor In defiance of a profound maxim of my distant relative - I say distant, because he was so far removed from me on the genealogical tree that even a Yankee peddler in the remote part of the South would not, upon the force of such a relationship, put up his horse and himself for more than six weeks, and that must place him on a very extreme twig, perhaps even its shadow. - By the way - it is a little singu lar that these fellows of the wooden nutmeg should always know where to find a market for their nuts and notions. But as I was saying - in defiance of a profound maxim of my distant relative - what a world of tender thoughts and emotions spring up in that one word relative l - what beings step from the magic of its circle - uncles not a few, aunts without number, and cousins a whole ship-load - all taking a warm interest in you if rich, a pride in you if learned or politically great, and never deserting you unless you become poor blessings on their sweet hearts Without them what would a man -be, or rather, what would the world be to him - A garden without a flower, a grove without a bird, an evening sky without one lovely star. - His feelings. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Story of a Sailor's Life I AM writing this to show the wonderful mercies the Lord has shown me in fifty years' life-time at sea, and I hope that whoever may have a chance to look at it, it will teach them not to despair, or give them selves up for lost for by perseverance, and a firm trust in the AI mighty, we can do anything that the Giver of all good will allow us to do; for there is a Sweet little cherub that sits up aloft, keeps a watch for the life of poor Jack. By accounts that I had from my friends, when I came to the years of' recollection, I was informed that I was born at sea, in the year of' our Lord 1777, on the 2otb of August my father being master of a brig belonging to Hull in Yorkshire, and when I was born, he was bound on a voyage from London to Hamburg. My mother being at sea along with her husband, and being at sea, and by contrary winds and bad weather being detained longer than what they expected, I was born on board of the J ane and Margaret, belonging to the port of Hull, when the brig was nearly abreast of' Heligoland, an island that lays at the entrance of Hamburg River; but my mother being very podrly, she and I were left at a place called Cuxhaven, at the entrance of the River Elbe. But my father being obliged to proceed upon his voyage, my mother and me were left at Hamburg at the consul's. And the winter setting in sooner and severer than B. Seen by its light, she was not pleasant to look upon. Bare-armed, bare-headed, savage chest half bare and sagging in festoons, she stood stayless and unashamed, breathing gin and wickedness. A grin of quiet joy was upon her alcoholic countenance. Nay, more than joy. It was a light of inward ecstasy, and sprang from the fact that a heavy carter's whip was in her hand. Not many feet from the spot on which she stood was the wall of a neighbor's house. Crouching against it so that he was scarcely visible in the darkness was a boy of thirteen. Without stockings or shoes, he wore only a filthy shirt, a thing that had once been a jacket, and a tattered lower gar ment which left his thighs half naked. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Captain Nathaniel Brown Palmer: An Old-Time Sailor of the Sea While employed as a reporter on The Sun, of New York, thirty odd years ago, the writer saw in the January, 1884, issue of Harper's Magazine, an illustrated account of "The Old Packet and Clipper Service." Records of swift passages, hero tales and statements of vast profits were mingled in it in a way that proved memorable. In fact, the whole story was so interesting that the magazine was preserved and became the first item in a collection of books relating to the sea. Naturally this collection came to resemble the original article in that the most important feature. was bibliographical; it came to demonstrate that a history of the sea, at least, is a series of biographies. S, Naturally, too, the records of some of the more active of the old master mariners were duplicated, more or less, in the various accounts - their work had attracted the attention of more than one writer. Accordingly, as the collection was read and reread, the names of certain captains became more and more familiar to the reader and then a time came when the name of one old captain came to mind whenever any true story of the sea was read. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Secret of the Sea &C Time was when the r.m.s. Patagonia' was the greyhound of the Atlantic but that time was long past. Newer and larger boats, burning less coal and making more knots, had been built nearly every year Since the Patagonia' had beaten the record by crossing the ocean in less than eight days from Browhead Castle to Fire Island Light. Now not only were there other deer-hounds of the deep two days faster than the Patagonia had ever been, but the Patagonia herself, like the man who went around the world, had lost a day. Although the Patagonia had changed owners, and was now no longer a royal mail steam-ship, it had not yet fallen to the low estate of the sea-tramp, a home less wanderer over the face of the waters, bearing hides from Buenos Ayres on one trip, and on the next carrying coals from Newcastle. She still belonged to a line in good repute, and she still made her regular round trip every five weeks from Liverpool to New York. Thus it was that the New York newspapers had to announce one Sunday morning, after the New England Spring 'had set in with its usual severity, ' that the Patagonia' had sailed from Liver pool the day before, having on board eighty-seven first-cabin passengers and two hundred and eleven in the steerage, and bringing also in gold. In due course the 'patagonia ought to have arrived at Sandy Hook about ten days after she left the Mersey. Except when detained by stress Of weather, the Patagonia was wont to arrive off Quarantine not later than Tuesday afternoon. But on this occasion Tuesday night came, and Wed nesday night, and yet the Patagonia came not. It happened that the r.m.s. Barataria, ' which was then devoting its energies to the lowering of the record, had left Liverpool an hour later than the Patagonia, ' had waited for the mails at Queenstown, as the Patagonia had not, and yet had landed its passengers on Sunday morning. Nor did the Officers of the Barataria' report any storms which would justify the tardiness of the Patagonia.' It was known, however, that the missing ship was perfectly sea-worthy, and, indeed, in excellent con dition, and her captain was a thorough sailor. So many little mishaps may occur to delay an ocean steamer - the bearings may get themselves over heated, or it may be necessary to stop the engines in mid-ocean to repack the steam-chest - that no anxiety was felt by the public. It is a fresh surprise for each one who ventures upon its illimitable way. In the bits of lyric contained in this slender volume I have sought to catch fleeting glimpses of ocean life and of sailor men in many parts of the Pacific, from the Russian voyager in Bering Sea to the Tahitian fisherman braving the perils of the deep in his open canoe, and his still more daring kinsmen who, some six hundred years ago, voy aged over thousands of miles of unknown water and discovered New Zealand. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Life's Voyage: A Diary of a Sailor on Sea and Land, Jotted Down During a Seventy-Years' Voyage The world of letters or literature has its combination of parts and particles, valuable and valueless, and it is only second in grandeur and greatness to the material world, and is the cradle of man's greatness. Without question man's nearest approach to God is in his intel lect and in his resolution, for resolution is omnipotent. Herein it is the intention, the premeditated design, to navigate both the deep, the shoal, the pacific, and the boisterous waters of the historical and the literary seas, and should necessity require, I shall sail close to the wind, but I must endeavor to steer clear of the dangerous rocks, Parody and Travesty. Some superficial critic may cry egotism. It would be beneficial to all such to peruse the immortal Vicar of Wakefield.
