Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The principles that guide our behaviors do so as thoughts. They determine the course of our lives, our evolution. Our thinking continues daily while we are not always aware of our choices or their consequences. If principles, values, or morality have been designed by a life of fear, regret, uncertainty, or anger, then the fatality will surely “drag some emotional baggage” with them as they proceed into their future. The process of reacting to life events often occurs without conscious awareness. If someone operates from a posture of survival or suspicion, they will most likely alienate themselves from opposing ideas that may possibly include some accuracy or opportunities. Thus the future will be infected by suspiciousness, and some will lose the ability to think in terms of trustworthiness, justice, integrity, or dependability. Being decisive is a good thing, unless the decision was made from a viewpoint of defensiveness, obsession, anger, or disorder. While some defended thinking is helpful, as in telemarketers, political jargon, scammers, and criminals, an overactive defense system can result in missed opportunities. If we feel contrary to our environment, then we most likely will be regulated by it begrudgingly because we give over personal control by being on guard. It is possible to invest too much energy, elan vital (vital force) in the course of defending or disagreeing. We all know the results of the acceleration of opposition! To the extent, that people hold themselves in reserve as opposed to investing in or exploring new concepts, they can forfeit opportunities. Diminish future prospects by maintaining some form of defense that seems safe but is actually holding them back. Eventually, this process can appear as normal and become its own progression into an overly defensed mind. We must at some point consciously monitor our thoughts, thus our motivations, to deal with or adapt to new information even if that information is contrary to what we already believe. It’s called being objective. And to do so doesn’t mean we have to change our values—it simply means we are being courteous to those who have other views on a subject. To become emotional is an option; however, that sometimes creates even more dissention. Most of the time, we use our observations to lead us toward a solution or answer. But where do our observations come from? Our personal history, which may well have some inaccurate or dated information. If we recognize frustration or misunderstandings, we can govern our thoughts and create better outcomes. We can overcome most of our troubles by doing so, and we can create a better, more prosperous future.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It’s time to outsmart your worry and anxiety. Drawing on the same cutting-edge psychology presented in author David Carbonell’s The Worry Trick, this irreverent, on-the-go guide offers ten powerful "counter-intuitive" strategies to help you put worry in its place—anytime, anywhere. Anxiety is a powerful force. It makes us question our decisions and ourselves, worry about the future, and it fills our days with dread and emotional turbulence. But what if we understood that anxiety is merely a trick of the mind, trying to convince us we’re in danger? Anxiety is like a magician behind the curtain, playing subtle tricks on us to convince us that we're in danger when we’re not. When we understand this, we can observe our anxious feelings with some distance. Based on the author’s popular book, The Worry Trick, this helpful and humorous guide identifies the “trick” of chronic anxiety, and provides the ten most powerful techniques based in acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT) and cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) to help you respond differently to panic, anxiety, worry, and phobias. Once you learn to respond differently to the worry trick, you’ll be able to break the cycle of chronic anxiety for good. Instead of trying to “manage” your anxiety or push anxious thoughts away—techniques that you’ve probably already discovered don’t work—the ten powerful strategies outlined in this guide will empower you to actually change how you respond to worry and anxiety, so you can get your life back!

Book excerpt: Map out your idea and finish your story in 7 stages! This book will show writers how to develop their ideas into a finished novel by working through it in 7 stages, while learning how to mapping out their story's progress and structure so they can evaluate and improve their work. It teaches writers to visualize their story's progress with a story map that helps them see all the different components of their story, where these components are going, and, perhaps most importantly, what's missing. The book simplifies Aristotle's elements of good writing (a.k.a. that each story should have a beginning, a middle and an end) into easily applicable concepts that will help writers improve their craft. The author helps readers strengthen their work by teaching them how to focus on one aspect of their story at a time, including forming stories and developing ideas, building strong structures, creating vibrant characters, and structuring scenes and transitions. Thought-provoking questions help writers more objectively assess their story's strengths and weaknesses so they may write the story they want to tell.

With a creative and engaging mix of coaching practice, management theories, case studies and personal story-telling, this book helps readers to identify both their own compass – which relates to integrity, passion and internal value systems – and radar – which helps them to understand organizational complexity and 'read' workplace dynamics and situations. The Compass and the Radar is founded on a series of searching questions that will enable anyone to find their compass and radar to achieve personal success: · How can I find out what my real strengths and talents are? · Do I love what I do? · How can I find a job with a company that truly reflects my values? · What is the price I am willing to pay for a meaningful and rewarding career? · How should I define a successful career? Key chapters offer practical tools, as well as insights on the trade-offs and difficult choices that everyone will need to make at some point in their career – all of which will underline the importance of having the most robust moral compass. In the midst of a volatile and uncertain world, one in which technology, AI and digital resources are transforming working environments, The Compass and the Radar allows readers to pause, reflect, and consider who they are, what they stand for, and how to remain free.

Sample Book Insights: #1 I have always loved the outdoors, but I was a bookworm as a kid. I found an escape in stories, and I loved learning about the world around me. I would bargain for my reading time, and sometimes my parents would force me to go outdoors. #2 I had a difficult time finding my place at the University of Arizona. The school was large and freshman classes hosted a hundred students or more. The university’s social scene was built around sororities and fraternities, which I had no interest in joining. #3 I learned a lot from Dr. Bill Calder, a professor in his sixties who had more energy than our entire roster of twenty-five college students. He would roust us from our tents just as the sun was beginning to color the acacia bushes red, and prod us to hurry, get up, there’s so much to see out here. #4 I had a difficult time finding a job as a field biologist, and when I did, it was with a local ornithologist who allowed a small number of volunteers to help her band birds. I was extremely nervous, but the crew leader hired me anyway.
