Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Outlines of Rhetoric for Schools and Colleges Aristotle 1 regards Rhetoric as the Art of Persuasion Whately,2 as the Art of Conviction; Campbell,8 as the Art of Discourse. Campbell's definition is to be preferred as more comprehensive than either of the others, since it includes all forms of literary composition; but Aristotle justly emphasizes the most vital object of all Rhetorical study - which is: to move men to action, to accomplish some definite purpose. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Outlines Art of Expression Corresponding to the Art of Expression, - which em bodies precepts for attaining to excellence in writing and speaking, and contemplates such assiduous practice as will make excellence easy and habitual, there is, of course, a Science of Expression, which gives us, in an abstract form, the principles that underlie these precepts. It is with the art, rather than the science, that we are at present concerned. Our principal object is, to promote greater facility in accurate and effective -composition. Hence the instruction imparted will be practical rather than theoretical, and immediate application will be made of every rule and every caution that may be suggested. It would be equally impossible and undesirable, however, to confine our attention wholly to Rhetorical precepts. Sometimes, to determine the precept, it will be necessary to investigate its underlying principle; and thus, While our main purpose is entirely practical, we shall, inciden tally, gain some familiarity with the canons of Rhetorical criticism, and, also, lay the foundation for subsequent studies in the departments of Logic and Early English. Book excerpt: Excerpt from High School English: Composition-Rhetoric-Literature The literature selections have been edited with the design not only of supplying necessary information but also of inducing the student to do his own thinking. There is at present far too much so-called appreciation and far too little real thought expended upon literature. In the prepara tion of the Exercises and of the Notes and Questions the authors have constantly borne in mind this supreme aim of education - the development of the ability to think. Teachers are therefore urged to require the students to write all the Exercises and to answer all the Questions. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Composition and Rhetoric: Teachers' Manual In addition to providing a key to the more difficult exercises, the author has included many supplementary assignments, as well as several specimens of composition, and has offered suggestions for presenting certain topics. The statement of the aims and the activities for each chapter may help to systematize the work of both the teacher and the class. Many teachers will readily supple ment the aims and the activities and thus add to the effective ness of their instruction and increase the interest of their students. Since Composition and Rhetoric is designed for use in senior high-school classes, the plan of arrangement and the organization of material differ somewhat from that found in most textbooks for junior-high-school classes. The following brief Outline shows the general plan and the scope of the book. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Notes for Teachers of English Composition (to Be Used in Connection With Elements of Rhetoric and English Composition, First High School Course) This pamphlet has two aims: (i) that of placing before the instructor certain hints as to method which could not appropriately be included in the pages of the text-book itself; and (2) that of gather ing together, for the sake of ready reference, typical answers to many of the questions asked in the exer cises. With regard to many of the answers much discretion is of course to be allowed. Those given in the following pages are, in cases where opinion and judgment play a part, simply those which seem to me typical, or which I should prefer in my own class-room. For assistance in the preparation of the pamphlet, my thanks are due to Miss Jeannette B. Gillespy, Assistant in English in Barnard College. Our aim is not to train writers in the finer graces Of language. That accomplishment depends upon the individual student and lies beyond our power. We shall be content if those who come to our book may receive a fresh desire to use with greater precision the simple English speech which is our priceless heritage. We have tried to keep this book free from the technical word and phrase, because we are persuaded that good Writing depends upon the simple essentials. Therefore, the main stress has been placed upon the word, sentence, and paragraph. Remembering, then, that the plastic mind of the young student is before us, with experiences and likings peculiar to him, we have tried to furnish that mind with clear and simple directions, with examples chosen from good writers, and exercises which will test the student's understanding of the principles of writing. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Essentials of Composition and Rhetoric IN this book the author has endeavored to present a clear and comprehensible discussion of the essentials of Rhetoric and English Composition, and to furnish the stu dent with suitable constructive and critical exercises. The statement of rhetorical principles as set forth in the text and the exercises placed at the end of each chapter have been the outgrowth of nine years' experience in the teaching of high school and college students. Such a course of practical instruction as is embodied in this book should, it is believed, form part of the training of every young man and woman. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Steps in English: Composition Rhetoric This book aims to teach young people to write effectively by having them write. It furnishes them with models from the masters, and asks them to use their own experiences as working material. Further, in the second part it develops a plan to teach them to write accurately, by training them to recognize, and thus to avoid, their errors. That his own hours are full of experiences adapted to literary expression is made known to the pupil by the study of literature in its relation to life. Of these experiences he has definite knowledge, and about them he can think clearly; and clear thinking, which comes only from clear knowing, usually results in ready and forceful expression. The book, in addition, lays a foundation for the appreciation of literature. To profit by the master writers the pupil must be able to recognize the value of their works. Accordingly he is here taught that literature is full of suggestion, and he is made to understand the various devices by which an author conveys this suggestion. When these methods have been discovered and sufficiently illustrated, the learner is asked to use them in writing about familiar experiences. Thus he is given a higher standard than a properly punctuated, rhetorical statement of facts, with the result that his theme work becomes a vital thing, - a pleasure, not a task. This book at first calls for compositions of only a few paragraphs in length. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
