The writer has endeavoured to state the principal facts in a clear style, and, at the same tithe, in as concise a manner as possible; yet he has dwelt suficiently on the important and memorable passages with which the history of Greece abounds, to render it not only rmdable, but interesting. The narrative is carried down to the period when Greece lastbecame arornan province, and is illustratedbymany wood engravings. The questions, introduced at the end of the volume, have been carefully prepared and arranged for the purpose of facilitating the progres of the pupil, and learning the teacher's labour. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Grecian History: An Outline Sketch About ten centuries before Christ a new race appeared the first in European history. It was not the earliest of civilized nations. Already twenty centuries looked down from the pyramids upon the populous valley of the Nile; the Israelites were safely established in the Land of Promise; the ships of their Phenician neighbors traded in every Med iterranean lagoon and river mouth, and the region of the Euphrates and Tigris had been for ages the cradle and the tomb of empires. But this fresh people, the Hellenes, or, as the Romans have taught us to call them, the Greeks, differed widely from all previous or contemporary races. Among them developed a unique and splendid civilization, the source of half the ideas and institutions which rule the modern world. So many of the distinguishing traits of the Greek national character Sprang from the natural conditions under which they lived that the wise student of Grecian history must ever preface his studies with some inquiry into the geography of Greece. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Outlines of Greek History: With a Survey of Ancient Oriental Nations The purpose of this book is to give to young students a general idea of the growth and character of the civilization of ancient Greece. As it is intended to form, with the author's Outlines of Roman History, a complete elementary course in ancient history, it contains a brief introduction - indicating the relation of history to civilization in general, and referring to the primitive culture with which civilization may be said to begin. It also contains a preliminary sketch of the progress of civilization before the time of the Greeks among the ancient Oriental peoples. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Outline History of Greece If a curtain of delicately woven lace, with pictures painted upon it, were to hang between us and a great number of other pictures and statues, with living figures moving about, it would be im possible for us to tell what was natural and what artificial. Earliest Greek history is seen through the curtain of tradition and poetry that drops down about the year B. C. 500. We are compara tively sure of the great body of facts this side of that date. Beyond it we can discern some facts. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Outlines of the History of Greek Philosophy On the other hand, however, these views do not remain confined to their first authors, they spread and maintain themselves in schools, and by means of writings; a scientific tradition is formed, the later members learn from the earlier, and through them are stimulated to the completion, continuation, and cor rection of their results, to the asking of new questions, and the search after new answers and methods. The systems of philosophy, however peculiar and self dependent they may be, thus appear as the members of a larger historical interconnection; in respect to this alone can they be perfectly understood; the farther we follow it, the more the individual becomes united to a whole of historical development, and the problem arises not merely of explaining this whole by means of the particular moments conditioning it, but. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Outline of Grecian History I. As Revealed by Archaeological Evidence. Suggestion 3. What is meant by the science of Archaeology? Describe its methods and results. 1. The Pre-historic Palace of Cnossus (Crete). Note 2. At Cnossus, near the north coast of the island of Crete, evidences of high civilization have recently been discovered which are believed to be of date as early as 2500 B. C. The remains consist chiefly of the ruins of a splendid palace which seems to have been the abode of rich and powerful kings through many generations, possibly several centuries. The building appears to have been three or more stories in height and to have been ornamented throughout with frescoes and statues in a style of art which shows many of the characteristics of the art of historic Greece. These early Cretans made vases of artistic shape and coloring, wove elaborate fabrics, and even possessed a system of picture writing adapted to inscriptions of considerable length. Since this early civilization, which archeologists have named "Aegean" or "Minoan," has been recognized, traces of it have been identified on other islands of the Aegean Sea, on the Asiatic coast, and in Sicily. 2. The Mycenaean Age: conditions of Life in this Period as Shown by Archaeological Discoveries. a. Intercourse with Egypt. b. Probable acquaintance with the civilization of the East through the Phoenicians. Suggestion 4. Give the geographical location of the Aegean Sea, Crete, Mycenae, Tiryns, Orchomenos, the Troad. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Story of the Greek People, an Elementary History of Greece The plan of this book is not only to present a simple outline of the chief events in the history of ancient Greece, but also to picture the customs of the people, their manner of living and thinking and feeling. So far as the size and scope of the little volume will permit, the names of those who were masters in art and literature are introduced, not in separate chapters as mere adjuncts to political history, but in their natural connection with the annals of their times, and ever in accordance with Plutarch's dictum, Often an action of small note, a short saying or a jest, shall distinguish a person's real character more than the greatest sieges or the most important battles. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of Greece, Vol. 1 Though we can add nothing to the existing records of Greek History, the estimate placed upon their value, and the conclusions drawn from them are constantly changing, and for this reason the story which has been told so often will be told anew from time to time, so long as it continues to have an interest for mankind - that is, let us hope, so long as mankind continue to exist. The present work is intended for readers who are acquainted with the outlines of the subject, and have some knowledge of the Greek language. It has been written in the belief that an intelligible sketch of Greek civilisation may be given within' a brief compass - not with the h0pe of throwing new light on 01d obscurities, or quoting fresh evidence where all the evidence has been long ago collected. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Outline of Greek and Roman Mythology The Greek and the Roman Mythology, though often con fused, should be kept distinct. Both Greeks and Romans no doubt inherited from the indo-european parent-folk a common fund of mythological conceptions. But these took shape in accordance with the peculiar genius, surroundings, and development of each people, with results widely different. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Outline-History of Greek Religion For determining our view of Greek religion in the second millennium b.c., when Hellenism was in the making, the poems of Homer and Hesiod are of priceless value if they are used with cautious and trained criticism. We depend greatly also on the general inductions of comparative religion and anthropology, which may sometimes guide us rightly in this matter, especially if the anthropo logical comparison is drawn from more or less adjacent communities rather than from the Antipodes. We depend also on the evidence of the monuments of the minoan-mycenaean religion, revealing glimpses of the practices and faith of a people of high culture, whom no one would dare now to call, at least in the earlier stage of their life, Hellenic, but from whom the earliest Hellenes doubtless adopted much into their own religion.
