Book excerpt: Owen Jones is one of the last Arizona Rangers; a group of lawman trained to hunt down outlaws in the wilds of Arizona Territory in the first part of the 20th century. After learning of the rape and killing of a woman and her young daughter near the border, Owen swears to bring the murderous gang to justice, despite an aging body and legislators who want to abolish the Rangers. Owen and a rookie ranger are sent to work with the rurales in Mexico to track down the gang, who are wanted by the Sonoran government for cattle rustling and robbery. There they learn about harsh Mexican frontier justice and come up against a mastermind who works in the shadows to control cattle rustling and counterfeit money schemes, using the violent outlaws for his own gain. In Mexico, Owen meets and falls in love with a beautiful, strong-willed widow who derails his uncomplicated view of life. He must confront his weaknesses in deciding on his future—one of comfort or a life outside the law.

Book excerpt: Arizona in the early twentieth Century, had more than its share of violent and lawless men who wreaked havoc as they roamed the Territory. The Arizona Rangers, a small company of tough men, were formed to deal with this criminal element. In a modern age, the Rangers fought the outlaws with old-fashioned methods. On horseback, with lever-action Winchesters and single-action Colts they rode after the outlaws through the vast deserts and high mountains of Arizona Territory. When he learns that a rancher's wife and daughter are kidnapped and taken to Mexico, Captain Wheeler, the Ranger commander, sends one of his best men to work with Colonel Kosterlitsky and the Mexican Rurales. Although their approach to enforcing the law is different and sometimes at odds, these men must work together in their common mission of tracking down the gang of cutthroats. The author was raised on the Mexican border and his roots are four generations deep in the region. He has great admiration and respect for those hardy folks who, in the face of great adversity, settled and thrived in the great Southwest. The many stories he listened to while growing up, some true, some not, served as the inspiration for Rio Sonora.

Book excerpt: In the veiled and shadowed history of the West there rides a mysterious horseman. His headless shoulders testify to his death at the hands of the law—in a state that forbade Mexicans like him to own property. A state that turned a deaf ear to the rape and murder of the horseman’s beautiful young wife. This is the Ghost of Sonora. Was he man or myth? Was Joaquin Murieta the Napoleon of Banditry, as the California Rangers have charged, or El Patrio, the great liberator of the Mexicans of California? Here is his story. You make the decision. Dead Man's Revenge The poor and oppressed of old California cheer Joaquin Murieta as El Patrio, the great liberator. The wealthy and powerful call him simply "the smiling bandit." Officials dispatch rangers to kill the popular outlaw and bring his head back to them as proof. But justice does not die so easily. Now out of the darkness there rides a mysterious horseman - a headless specter bent on taking his revenge.

In their day, these men were the most daring of their kind, and the most feared. Eventually Tom Ketchum was caught and sentenced to death for attempting to hold up a railway train. He became the first individual--and the last--ever to be executed for a crime of this sort. Jeffrey Burton has been researching the story of the Ketchum Gang for more than forty years. He sorts fact from fiction to provide the definitive truth about Ketchum and numerous other outlaws, including Will Carver and Butch Cassidy. The Deadliest Outlaws initially was published in a limited run of one hundred paperback copies in England. This second edition in hardcover contains additional material and photographs not found in the earlier printing.

A violent conflict with a ranching neighbor in Montana caused him to flee to the Hole-in-the-Wall valley in Wyoming, where he became involved in rustling and eventually graduated to bank and train robbing as a member of the Wild Bunch. This outlaw group was a melding of the best of the Hole-in-the-Wall gang and Butch Cassidy's Powder Springs gang. Smokov shows that Curry was not the bloodthirsty killer that many have claimed. He contends that Curry was the actual train robbing leader of the Wild Bunch.

By 1935, Republic had become a studio and released its first movie, Westward Ho! starring a young John Wayne, who would stay with Republic for the next 17 years. Republic would go on to produce highly successful Westerns starring singing cowboys Gene Autry and Roy Rogers as well as serial adventure series. The studio cranked out so many exciting (not to mention money-making) serials that it became known as "The Thrill Factory." Occasionally, Republic would produce and distribute "A" features, such as Macbeth and The Quiet Man, but it was the "B" Westerns and adventure serials that they knew best how to produce and market. Until its demise in 1959, Republic fed hungry moviegoers with a steady diet of "B" Westerns, serials, dramas, series pictures and musicals. The Republic Pictures Checklist provides a full listing of Republic releases, with plot synopses, release dates, alternate titles, chapter titles and awards. All of Republic's output, including documentaries and training films, is included.
