Book excerpt: Dare County Sheriff Martin Tate and his ex-detective friend Paul Treadwell chase a vindictive serial killer menacing North Carolina's Outer Banks in this debut thriller. When authorities find the body of a woman in her ransacked home the crime scene looks like a robbery that went terrifyingly out of control. However, there are several items left behind in plain view that appear to be totally out of place to Marty Tate, a seasoned investigator. Tate decides that he'd like another opinion on the case, so he enlists advice from former Northeast Ohio detective, Paul Treadwell, now the owner of the Brown Pelican Restaurant in Duck. Two years ago, Paul and his wife, Megan, a former nurse, won a sizable fortune in the Ohio Lottery. After careful consideration, they decided to relocate and become permanent residents of the Outer Banks. When Paul finds another piece of unusual evidence at the ransacked cottage, Tate's original suspicions are confirmed. A homicide has been committed here disguised as a robbery gone horribly wrong. Together with other highly trained and motivated law enforcement personnel they forge ahead in order to identify and apprehend a deadly intruder to these shores who meticulously continues his killing spree as the tourist season rolls along. The good guys know that there is no such thing as a "perfect" homicide. Even the craftiest of killers makes a mistake or two. Nothing new there. The problem for the good guys is that their killer hasn't gotten the memo on that one. He's good. He's exceptionally good at killing people and getting away with it.

Book excerpt: This is Shirley Mays' second book. She is a North Carolina real estate broker and an environmental consultant. She has a Research Center at the Cotton Exchange in Wilmington, North Carolina, A Coast Guard City. She lost her son Jeffrey. He was only 21. He went fishing one day, 16 miles offshore Cape Hatteras in the Gulf Stream and just simply disappeared. International drug dealing had been reported in the area and she feels that somehow Jeffrey placed himself in the wrong place at the wrong time. He was without a doubt a little fish in a huge pond. The United States Coast Guard conducted one of the largest searches ever on the East Coast. Shirley has waged a fight against corruption and drug dealing for the last 29 years. She hates the environment that surrounded her only son that fateful day. The same environment is prevalent throughout the nation. It is destroying families everywhere. While pursuing this search for Jeffrey, she became quite a good investigator and researcher and eventually became a Whistleblower with the largest case against government fraud ever filed in the nation. Her qui tam case involved political corruption and drug dealing and was covered up by the judicial system at the highest levels of government. Her discovery involves over 400,000 properties from the first big Savings and Loan bailout. The FDIC falsified much of the information, including the federal ID numbers, in order to block the trail of value. She has the FDIC's official databases to prove it.

Incarcerated several times, he was a prison escape artist. Paddy Mitchell wrote about his life and adventures while serving his sentence in a maximum security prison in Leavenworth, Kansas. Book excerpt: A rollicking true story of Bibles and bank robberies in Southern California, from a talented and highly praised gonzo journalist Chas Smith grew up deeply enmeshed in the evangelical Christian world that grew out of Southern California in the late 1960s. His family included famous missionaries and megachurch pastors, but his cousin Daniel Courson was Grandma’s favorite. Smith looked up to Cousin Danny. He was handsome, adventurous, and smart, earned a degree from Bible college, and settled into a family and a stable career. Needless to say, it was a big surprise when Cousin Danny started robbing banks. Known as the “Floppy Hat Bandit,” Courson robbed 19 of them in a torrid six-week spree before being caught and sentenced to seven years. When he tried to escape, they tacked on another year. And when he finally got out, despite seeming to be back on the straight and narrow, Cousin Danny disappeared. Banks started getting robbed again. It seemed Cousin Danny might be gunning for the record. Smith’s Blessed Are the Bank Robbers is the wild, and wildly entertaining, story of an all-American anti-hero. It’s a tale of bank robberies, art and jewel heists, high-speed chases, fake identities, encrypted Swiss email accounts, jilted lovers, and the dark side of an evangelical family (and it wasn’t just Danny; an uncle was mixed up with the mujahideen). It’s a book about what it means to live inside the church and outside the law.

Book excerpt: This is Shirley Mays' third book. She is a North Carolina real estate broker and an environmental consultant. She has a Research Center at the Cotton Exchange in Wilmington, North Carolina. This book is about a conspiracy to defraud the United States taxpayers perpetrated by individuals employed by the Resolution Trust Corporation (RTC) and its successor agency on the matter in question, the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC). The Resolution Trust Corporation was a US government-owned asset management company mandated to liquidate assets of the defunct savings and loan associations ("S&Ls"). Between 1989 and mid-1995, the RTC closed or otherwise resolved 747 Savings & Loans Institutions (known as thrifts) with total assets in the hundreds of billions of dollars. Shirley Mays was certified by the RTC and the FDIC as a minority woman -owned corporation. She became an insider and a whistleblower. Her whistleblowing case filed with the Department of Justice in July of 1996 was covered up by the government with lightening speed. She filed an IRS Whistleblower Case in June of 2009. She and her Congressman are now going after the corporate criminals like the IRS went after Al Capone.. for tax evasion. She has their pseudo-Federal ID numbers. Whereas, there is no statute of limitations when you are able to show that they knew they were committing fraud. The IRS looks at a fraud case entirely differently. It can pursue any case where it can prove the company knew it was cheating, even if the underpayment was 20 years ago.

Book excerpt: The Broadway Books Library of Larceny Luc Sante, General Editor For more than fifty years, Willie Sutton devoted his boundless energy and undoubted genius exclusively to two activities at which he became better than any man in history: breaking in and breaking out. The targets in the first instance were banks and in the second, prisons. Unarguably America’s most famous bank robber, Willie never injured a soul, but took on almost a hundred banks and departed three of America’s most escape-proof penitentiaries. This is the stuff of myth—rascally and cautionary by turns—yet true in every searing, diverting, and brilliantly recalled detail.

Book excerpt: Take a notorious but now reformed (and bored to tears) bank robber, a neurotic, newly-widowed Italian woman plotting behind her kids' backs to save herself from a fate worse than death--Florida--and a sweet, fifty-eight-year-old widow more determined than most New Yorkers to get what she deserves--a little respect, a little fun, and a lot of TLC. What do you have? Bank Robbers, C. Clark Criscuolo's hilarious, heartwarming new novel about life in its "prime." Although Dottie Weist, Teresa Newhouse, and Arthur MacGregor met as teenagers, the three have not been friends for almost thirty years. And everything has changed. Teresa alternates between sadness over her husband's death and rage--how dare he get cancer and leave her alone? Arthur, now divorced and living alone in Rye, tries his best to fight the utter boredom of his reformed lifetyle. And Dottie, who lost her only son in the war and her husband several years ago, is beginning to panic. Just released from a six-week stay in the hospital after a diagnosis of osteoporosis, Dottie has lost her job; without it, she has no private insurance. (Medicaid doesn't cover non-life-threatening illnesses.) So she's cooked up a scheme to take care of all her money worries, but she has to turn to Teresa and Arthur, with their "business" connections, to help her get the one thing she needs: a gun. Separately and together, they go looking for something to liven up the golden years now that everything they once had, including spouses, children who cared, jobs that mattered, good health--and health insurance--is gone. Criscuolo's delightfully unlikely threesome is destined to find what they are looking for as they advance fiercelely on "senior citizenhood" armed with a few laughs, a few disguises, and each other.

Book excerpt: "What Hilary Mantel did for Thomas Cromwell and Paula McLain for Hadley Hemingway . . . Moehringer does for bank robber Willie Sutton" in this fascinating biographical novel of America's most successful bank robber (Newsday). Willie Sutton was born in the Irish slums of Brooklyn in 1901, and he came of age at a time when banks were out of control. Sutton saw only one way out and only one way to win the girl of his dreams. So began the career of America's most successful bank robber. During three decades Sutton became so good at breaking into banks, the FBI put him on its first-ever Most Wanted List. But the public rooted for the criminal who never fired a shot, and when Sutton was finally caught for good, crowds at the jail chanted his name. In J.R. Moehringer's retelling, it was more than need or rage that drove Sutton. It was his first love. And when he finally walked free -- a surprise pardon on Christmas Eve, 1969 -- he immediately set out to find her. "Electrifying." --Booklist (starred) "Thoroughly absorbing . . . Filled with vibrant and colorful re-creations of not one but several times in the American past." --Kevin Baker, author of Strivers Row "[J.R. Moehringer] has found an historical subject equal to his vivid imagination, gimlet journalistic eye, and pitch-perfect ear for dialogue. By turns suspenseful, funny, romantic, and sad--in short, a book you won't be able to put down." --John Burnham Schwartz, author of Reservation Road and The Commoner

Two Australian boys on a working holiday in the snowfields of the American Rocky Mountains decided to rob a bank. Their plan was so hopelessly inept that although they escaped with over US$130,000 after threatening bank staff with a replica pistol, the trail of clues they left ensured they were identified almost immediately. Among the many things they did wrong was to rob a bank where they were regular customers (staff instantly recognised them and their impossible-to-disguise Australian accents), to tip a taxi driver $20,000, and then to photograph themselves holding up bundles of the stolen money, all before attempting to buy one way tickets to Mexico in cash.

Book excerpt: "With the style and pacing of a good novel...should become a standard in the genre."—Publishers Weekly FBI Special Agent William J. Rehder, the man CBS News once described as "America's secret weapon in the war against bank robbers," chronicles the lives and crimes of bank robbers in today's Los Angeles who are as colorful and exciting as the legends of long ago. The mild-mannered antiques dealer who robbed more banks than anyone else in history. The modern Fagin who took a page out of Dickens and had children rob banks for him. The misfit bodybuilders who used a movie as a blueprint for a spree of violent robberies. In a fast-paced, hard-edged style that reads like a novel, Where the Money Is carries us through these stories and more—all within a pistol shot of Hollywood, all true-life tales as vivid as anything on the big screen.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the nineteenth century, Scotland was renowned as a land of misty glens, engineering innovation and inventive genius. But it was also the home of brutal murder, terrifying riots, cruelty to children, bank robbery and acid attacks. Women as well as men were capable of horrendous acts, and crime could strike anywhere: at home, on the road and even at sea. From the Borders to the Northern Isles, crime was never far away. Edinburgh, with its reputation for polite decorum, was also the scene of poisoning and savagery; the dark streets of industrial Glasgow and Dundee harboured thieves and muggers; and the villages of coast and country hid wild men and vicious women. Bloody Scotland exposes some of the crimes, both remembered and forgotten, that rocked Scotland in those lawless times and reveals not only the criminals who perpetrated them, but also the law enforcers who fought hard to maintain order against a rising tide of crime.
