Book Synopsis Through the Window, Out the Door by : Janis P. Stout
Download or read book Through the Window, Out the Door written by Janis P. Stout and published by University Alabama Press. This book was released on 2020-11-10 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This informative and provocative study focuses on the centrality of departure in the texts of five major American women novelists. An important moment in many novels and poems by American women writers occurs when a central character looks out a window or walks out the door of a house. These acts of departure serve to convey such values as the rejection of constraining social patterns, the search for individual fulfillment, and the entry into the political. Janis Stout examines such moments and related patterns of venture and travel in the fiction of five major American novelists of the 20th century: Mary Austin, Willa Cather, Anne Tyler, Toni Morrison, and Joan Didion. Stout views these five writers within a spectrum of narrative engagements with issues of home and departure—a spectrum anchored at one end by Sarah Orne Jewett and at the other by Marilynne Robinson, whose Housekeeping posits a vision of female transience. Through the Window, Out the Door ranges over an expansive territory. Moving between texts as well as between texts and contexts, Stout shows how women writers have envisioned the walls of physical and social structures (including genres) as permeable boundaries, drawing on both a rhetoric of liberation and a rhetoric of domesticity to construct narrative arguments for women's right to move freely between the two. Stout concludes with a personal essay on the dilemmas of domesticity and the ambivalence of departure.
Book Synopsis Shoes Outside the Door by : Michael Downing
Download or read book Shoes Outside the Door written by Michael Downing and published by Catapult. This book was released on 2002-08-15 with total page 407 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A close-up look at the scandals that rocked the San Francisco Zen Center, a leader in alternative religious practice and the counterculture in America, and their repercussions. The remarkable forty-year history of the people who established the first Buddhist monastery outside of Asia in the history of the world has never been told. Michael Downing wondered why. "I'm living proof of why you better not speak out," explained one ordained Zen priest. "The degree to which I was scapegoated publicly was most effective in keeping everyone else quiet." In 1959, a Soto Zen priest took leave of his family in Japan to minister to the congregation of a Buddhist temple in San Francisco. Alan Watts and others spread the word that an authentic Zen Roshi was living there, and students, poets, drifters, and seekers began to attend his lectures. Impressed by their sincerity and commitment, Suzuki Roshi began to offer instruction in zazen (meditation) and other Buddhist practices to these devoted young spiritual pioneers. The San Francisco Zen Center was born. And then, in 1983, meltdown. A sex scandal rocked Zen Center, and it triggered tragedies and headlines about abuse of power that called into question the whole matter of alternative religious practice in America. Overnight the most prominent community of Buddhists in the West found itself at the vanguard of a cultural revolt against spiritual authority. For Shoes Outside the Door, Michael Downing spent three years studying documents and interviewing more than eighty people who were there, at ground zero. As engaging as any mystery, as mysterious as any political campaign, as political as any family gathering, this story will haunt and challenge readers as they unravel this essential chapter of American history.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Come Out and Close the Door, Sonya Brazzel writes of the emotionally and spiritually trying experience of living with a drug-addicted spouse. Sonya poignantly shares her own story of becoming a mother at the young age of fifteen, and the subsequent ups and downs of living with her addicted ex-husband for nearly thirty years before finally breaking free. From this experience, Sonya speaks authentically about why women stay in bad relationships, examining the fears and hopes underlying this difficult decision. She covers a breadth of soul-piercing topics, teaching the importance of conquering the shame of our pasts and forgiving those who have wronged us. At the same time, she provides wise counsel on divorce as a necessary tool for achieving freedom and healing in extreme circumstances. While not softening the terrible effects of a life controlled by addiction, Sonya points readers to declare and decree God's protection and truth into their own circumstances. Rather than being held captive by the fears and shame of the past, Sonya shows how we can confidently move forward to overcome the despair and destruction that addiction wreaks. Through it all, Come Out and Close the Door points readers to find true hope in the power and love of our Almighty God. Psalm 37:23 The steps of a good man are ordered by the Lord: and he delighteth in his way.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Early in 1937, a young film editor went on-location to St. George, Utah, for the filming of Republic's The Painted Stallion. Rain and cast problems put the production hopelessly behind schedule. The studio summarily fired the director and replaced him with the film editor. Thus was born the career of one of Hollywood's most famous serial directors, Bill Witney. Witney went on to direct or codirect 23 Republic serials, working with such stars as William Benedict, Hoot Gibson, Bela Lugosi, and Noah Beery, Sr. Witney's output included some of the most famous cliffhangers of the era, such as Adventures of Red Ryder, Spy Smasher, Drums of Fu Manchu, The Lone Ranger, and The Lone Ranger Rides Again. Though he enjoyed a long career as a feature film and television director, it is the Republic serials for which he is best remembered. This engaging story is a behind-the-scenes look at the heyday of the Hollywood cliffhanger, the making of the movies, and the people involved in them.
