Book excerpt: Finalist for the Lincoln Prize! Traditional histories of the Civil War describe the conflict as a war between North and South. Kenneth W. Noe suggests it should instead be understood as a war between the North, the South, and the weather. In The Howling Storm, Noe retells the history of the conflagration with a focus on the ways in which weather and climate shaped the outcomes of battles and campaigns. He further contends that events such as floods and droughts affecting the Confederate home front constricted soldiers’ food supply, lowered morale, and undercut the government’s efforts to boost nationalist sentiment. By contrast, the superior equipment and open supply lines enjoyed by Union soldiers enabled them to cope successfully with the South’s extreme conditions and, ultimately, secure victory in 1865. Climate conditions during the war proved unusual, as irregular phenomena such as El Niño, La Niña, and similar oscillations in the Atlantic Ocean disrupted weather patterns across southern states. Taking into account these meteorological events, Noe rethinks conventional explanations of battlefield victories and losses, compelling historians to reconsider long-held conclusions about the war. Unlike past studies that fault inflation, taxation, and logistical problems for the Confederate defeat, his work considers how soldiers and civilians dealt with floods and droughts that beset areas of the South in 1862, 1863, and 1864. In doing so, he addresses the foundational causes that forced Richmond to make difficult and sometimes disastrous decisions when prioritizing the feeding of the home front or the front lines. The Howling Storm stands as the first comprehensive examination of weather and climate during the Civil War. Its approach, coverage, and conclusions are certain to reshape the field of Civil War studies.

Book excerpt: My sister frowns in confusion. “I don’t see why we can’t uncomplicate it. You’ve found your mate, what do you mean ‘she belongs to Jace?’ Is she Jace’s mate?” “No,” I snarl, slamming my fists on the floor, feeling my beast make itself known again. Kayden sighs heavily. “She’s his slave.” Tyler Storm is supposed to lead every werewolf pack on the West Coast into an age of prosperity—but before he does that, he needs to get control of the explosive cocktail of predator blood in his veins. Controlling your inner wolf is hard enough without a vampiric bloodline complicating things. And then one night, he meets his destined mate... and she is at the feet of a rival Alpha. In chains. It’s enough to make anyone lose their head. Meanwhile, Abbygail has just about given up on anything better than trying to please the brute who slaughtered her parents, and hopefully not getting too many ribs kicked in next time he wants to work off some steam. She doesn’t realize that there’s more than sadism behind what’s happening to her: there’s a calculated shot at unseating a king and destroying a peace treaty generations in the making. The curse of a sacred bond that has been twisted and defiled descends on the two of them as Tyler loses control, and Abby discovers that she may have been down, but she wasn’t out. Not for good, anyway.

The sunlight was so blinding to my eyes that had been locked closed from insanity and pain or the weight of the Seroquel that I did not take in the whole scene at first. I looked at the sky. It was blue with small hints of grey, and the breeze was still while the clouds were large and puffy. The sky was calm and peaceful and gorgeous. My eyes squinted from brightness and slight nausea; I looked down from the second floor of the raised old house and realized the streets had morphed into rivers. I looked on with both disbelief and amazement.' As the whispers of Hurricane Katrina swirled through New Orleans, I did not even consider evacuating. The reason is simple. I did not have enough heroin to make it very far out of the city, without facing the impending doom of dope sickness. This is my story of the storm of the century. Follow me, sloshing through the storm's flood waters, searching for my next fix, with the slow realization that things will never be the same again. Eliza Player spent nearly ten years living in New Orleans, soaking up all the dirt and grime that the streets and her addiction had to offer, until Hurricane Katrina threatened that way of life forever. Since she came to her recovery, she graduated from the University of North Carolina at Charlotte, became a proud mother and wife, and has been writing about her past experiences in hopes to shed some light into places some feel are too dark."--P. Book excerpt: After a tornado rips through her town, store owner Abigail comes across a piece of fabric from a wedding dress among the devastation. Abigail is moved to start collecting other swatches of fabric she finds – her neighbor’s kitchen curtains, a man’s necktie, a dog’s bed – which she stashes in shopping bags. As she pursues her seemingly absurd quest, horrible realities spark the question, “What kind of a God would allow such tragedy?” As she struggles to reconcile her right to happiness amidst the destruction, Abigail begins piecing together a patchwork quilt from the salvaged fabric in hopes it will bring some peace. But a new relationship with Justin, a contractor, may require too much of her fragile heart. Will her pain and questions of faith give way to the courage to love?

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Unmatched in scope and literary quality, this landmark anthology spans three thousand years, bringing together more than six hundred poems by more than one hundred thirty poets, in translations–many new and exclusive to the book–by an array of distinguished translators. Here is the grand sweep of Chinese poetry, from the Book of Songs–ancient folk songs said to have been collected by Confucius himself–and Laozi’s Dao De Jing to the vividly pictorial verse of Wang Wei, the romanticism of Li Po, the technical brilliance of Tu Fu, and all the way up to the twentieth-century poetry of Mao Zedong and the post—Cultural Revolution verse of the Misty poets. Encompassing the spiritual, philosophical, political, mystical, and erotic strains that have emerged over millennia, this broadly representative selection also includes a preface on the art of translation, a general introduction to Chinese poetic form, biographical headnotes for each of the poets, and concise essays on the dynasties that structure the book. The Anchor Book of Chinese Poetry captures with impressive range and depth the essence of China’s illustrious poetic tradition.

Book excerpt: From the Beijing Spring of 1979 until the student uprisings of 1989 a new generation of poets flourished in China. Influenced by Western Modernism and increasingly daring in their challenges to state control of their art, these poets disguised political protest and social commentary in shadowy images and metaphors, earning them the name "Misty Poets." Rejecting the Social Realism prescribed by Maoist doctrine, they celebrated subjective experience and individuality, ushering in a new era of artistic expression that has been dampened but not extinguished by the Tiananmen Square massacre. This new anthology is the most comprehensive English sampling available of the work of the Misty Poets and their even younger proteges, many of whom now live in exile in the West, where they continue to reshape Chinese poetry and Literature. Editor Tony Barnstone offers a generous and representative sample of the work of more than a dozen poets. From more familiar writers such as Bei Dao and Duo Duo to such emerging figures as Zhang Zhen, Bei Ling, and Chou Ping (who composes many of his poems in English), these poets characterize the vibrant reawakening of Chinese poetry. Barnstone's substantial critical introduction places the poets in their cultural, historical, and political context.

It's been an exhausting couple of months, fighting off supernatural monsters from another dimension that have become drawn to our territory. You'd think fate would finally throw us a well-deserved break. But you'd be wrong. Instead, a legendary vaettur has come clawing at our door. This terror has killed greater shepherds than me before. It will take all of us to stop it, but with the northern and southern homesteads still divided, we're not exactly overflowing with teamwork around here. As the only lightning shepherd, I may have a shot at taking down this threat. But I can't do it alone. And I can't do it without unlocking the magical secret still buried inside me. ***** The Magic of Nasci is a wild ride that takes readers into an action-packed adventure through Earth's untamed forests. Filled with found family and a slow-burn romance, it's a new take on superhero fantasy.
